Arthur Stanley “Josh” Johnson, 74, of Sod passed away Friday, September 27, 2024, at Hubbard Hospice West.

He retired from Carpenters Local #1207 with 53 years of service. He was an outdoorsman. Arthur served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War earning the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, and an Army Commendation Medal. He was also a member of the Daniel Boone Post 5578 of the VFW in Madison, WV.

Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Olive Breedlove Johnson; grandson, Gabriel David Johnson; siblings, Thomas “Buddy” Johnston, Jr., Betty Ann Johnson, Helen Johnson, Jana Justice, Danny Johnston.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Carolyn Means Johnson; daughter, Rebecca (Bo) Johnson; son, Joshua (Kathy) Johnson; children of the heart, Kathleen (Ben) Hogue, Melissa Payne, Victoria (Rick) Goodwin, James E. (Melissa) Harper, III; grandchildren, Jayson Johnson, Ben (Nikki) Hogue, Jr., Amber (Sean) Moore, Andrea Hudson, Becky Hudson, Phillip Payne, Rachel Payne, Larry, Ray, & Michael Spencer, Brittany Lambert, Tiffany Walters; great grandchildren, Kensley, Myla, Ares, Reagan, Lacey, Adelaide, Rayson, Aiden, Remy, Ja’Vion; siblings, Lillian Smith, Loretta Turley, Forrest Johnston, Ellen Johnson, Henry “David” Johnson, Marie Young.

Violet Evelyn Dawson

Heaven gained another angel when our sweet Violet passed from this life into the loving arms of Jesus on September 23, 2024.

Violet Evelyn Dawson was born to Thomas Roy and Malinda L. Cobb Dawson
in Sissonville, WV. Though many challenges faced her even in childhood, none would dim her beautiful smile.

She attended Shawnee Hills where she met the love of her life, Bob Ballard. They soon built a life together and God blessed them with nearly fifty years together.

In addition to her parents, Violet was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert “Bobby” Lee Mullins, George Melvin Dawson, and Thomas Edward Dawson; her mother-in-law, Betty Joyce Nixon and sister-in-law, Rebecca Lynn Carter.

Left to cherish her memories are her loving life partner, Robert “Bob” Ballard, of Dunbar, WV; her brother, Johnny Wayne Dawson and his wife Betsy of Elkview, WV; her sister-in-law, Nancy Kuhn and her husband Roger of Alum Creek, WV; brother-in-law, Richard Ballard and his wife Cynthia of St. Albans, WV; her nieces, Jasmine Dawson Winnestaffer, Melissa Ann Eskew and her husband Mike; her nephews, Jonathan “Little Johnny” Dawson, Danzir Chance Carr, Jonathan Lee Allen, Patrick Andrew Allen and Jennifer Ball, and Brian Howard Stuck; and many great nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside funeral at 1:00pm, Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Clark Cemetery, Kellys Creek with her nephew, Reverend Johnny Dawson officiating. Violet will be laid to rest beside family and friends in Clark Cemetery, Kellys Creek, WV.

William Blaine Kelly

William Blaine “Bill” Kelly, 81, of South Charleston passed away Thursday, September 19, 2024, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Bill was a former mining construction supervisor for Interstate Equipment Corporation in Pittsburgh. He was a true outdoorsman and a friend to all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W.H. and Irene E. McComas Kelly; and brother, David Kelly.

Bill is survived by his wife of 33 years, Almeda; daughters, Dawn (Dennis) Hayes of Tazewell, VA and Kayla Kelly of South Charleston; sons, Keith (Sharon) Kelly of Clover, SC and Eric (Lisa) Kelly of Charlotte, NC; brother, Robert Wayne Kelly of South Charleston; sisters, Shirley Jo Dugan of Tornado and Nancy (Dewey) Beezley of Charleston; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 7:00pm, Monday, September 23, 2024, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service.

Elizabeth Jane “Janie” Coy

Elizabeth Jane “Janie” Coy, 61, of Yawkey passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Janie was a former employee of Thomas Memorial Hospital. She was a member of New Covenant Baptist Church. Janie was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Maxwell Coy; parents, Larry and Virginia Stone Smith; and sister, Diana Harless.

Janie is survived by her children, Ronald “Joey” Coy, David (Jillian) Coy, Larry “Scotty” (Sierra) Coy, Aubrey Coy, Gavin Coy, Lottie Coy; grandchildren, Eli, Keagen, Julia, Isaiah, Mallory, Zachary, Chloe, Jacob, Wyatt, Zalem, Aniston, Waylon; sisters, Drema (Steve) Holeston, Teresa (Danny) Hughes, Reba Halstead; brother, Arthur (Betty) Booth; nephews, Jeremy (Shirley) Holeston, Michael (Brandy) Holeston; and dear friend, Mimi Smith.

Ronnie S. Walls

Ronnie Steve Walls, 77, of Sod went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Ronnie was a 1965 graduate of Scott High School and served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a lineman with Appalachian Power Company and a faithful member and deacon at Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Sod, where he was dearly loved by his church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonzo and Macel Linville Walls; daughter, Traci; and brother, Ricky.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Rose; son, Michael; stepchildren, Scott Kirk, Jason (Sam) Kirk; sister, Brenda (Jackie) Collins; 6 grandchildren.

Service will be 2:00pm, Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Clyde Gwin officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Barbra Estelle LeRoy Bennett

Barbra Estelle LeRoy Bennett, 92, of Charleston, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on September 17, 2024, surrounded by her beloved family after a brief illness. Born on August 4, 1932, she was the cherished eldest daughter of the late Alfred J. LeRoy and Mary Argenbright LeRoy.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Barbra’s life was a testament to love and joy. She delighted in meeting her four great-great-grandchildren: Juniper “Juni” Fleenor, Lincoln Fleenor, Hudsyn “Huddy” Daniel, and Aeryn McClanahan. Their presence brought her immense happiness.

After graduating from Stonewall Jackson High School, Barbra dedicated most of her life to being a homemaker, and later, when her children were grown, she worked at Angela’s Pizza in Dunbar. Her unwavering faith and musical talents enriched many lives, as she served numerous churches in the valley. Barbra’s gift for music shone through her skilled piano, organ, and accordion playing, and her beautiful voice touched the hearts of all who heard her.

Preceding her in death are her beloved husband, Omer E. Bennett, Jr., her siblings Alfred LeRoy, Mary Ann Burgess, and Mickey LeRoy, and her two grandsons-in-law, Matt Daniel and Danny Wilson.

Barbra is survived by her children, Omer E. “Eddie” (Sarita) Bennett, III, of Charleston, Terry (Lynn) Bennett of Alexandria, KY, and Renee Bennett of Charleston. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her grandchildren Jennifer (John) Taylor of Grundy, VA, Beth (Bryan) Hoylman of Charleston, Sarah Leigh (Steve) Runyon of Peytona, and Justin Bennett of Alexandria, KY. Her great-grandchildren include Logan (Hannah) Fleenor, Ryan (Taylor) Fleenor, Dutch (Cheyanne) Fleenor, William “Billy” (Brooke) Grass, Layne (Mackenzie) Daniel, Christian Wilson, Leah Wilson, Amber (Dallas) McClanahan, and John “Jet” Taylor. Barbra is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held for the family with Reverend Rick Gardner of Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene officiating.

Darlene Rose Reynolds

Darlene Rose Reynolds (Murphy), 66, of Davis Creek passed away peacefully at home the morning of September 11, 2024.

She was born to the late Scoval Reynolds and Anna Jones Reynolds. Darlene often shared fond memories of her younger years spent in Clio, West Virginia. She was a graduate of Walton High School.

Darlene is predeceased by her loving parents, Scoval and Anna; her mother-in-law, Norva “Peggy” and Ivan Murphy; and her longtime friend, Nona Orem.

Darlene is survived by her life partner and former husband, William “Billbo” Murphy, who she resided with. Darlene was a loving mother to her two sons, Stephen “Stevie” Murphy of Charleston and Josh and his wife, Carrie of South Charleston. Her grandchildren, Autumn, Cole, and Michael were the joys of her life, and she loved them deeply. Darlene is also survived by her four sisters, Vickie (Bob) Gragg of North Carolina, Linda (Tom) Leary of North Carolina, Valerie Akers of Charleston, WV, and Eva Hardman of Cabin Creek, WV. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family members.

Per her request, she will be cremated, and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Archele Faye Griffith, 48, of Teays Valley, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2024, at CAMC General Hospital.

She was a former member of PETA where she was instrumental in getting the elephants removed from the circus. She was also a former employee of Teamsters Union.

She is survived by her children, Hope Marie Griffith, Sequoia Rain Hundley (Stephany Adkins), Emily Regina Hundley, Bobbie Antionette Hundley, Jacob Hundley; father and stepmother, Bill (Susan) Griffith; mother, Carolyn Tomey; sisters, Michele Larnerd, Heather Clarkson; grandchildren, Gracelynn, Taylen, Sequoia, Daniel, Anabelle, Zara, and Sophia.

Service will be at 6:30pm, Monday, September 23, 2024, at Resurrection Church, 123 Summers Street Charleston, WV 25301.

Parking is free in the parking garage diagonal to the church. Across from the library.

Thomas Edward Dawson passed from this world into the comforting arms of Jesus September 3, 2024, after an extended illness.

He was the son of the late Thomas Roy and Malinda L. Cobb Dawson, born in Sissonville, WV. Preceding him also in death are his brothers Robert “Bobby” Lee Mullins and George Melvin Dawson.
