Charlotte Jeannette Billingsley

Jeanette Billingsley, 73, of South Charleston died Saturday, December 30, 2017 at CAMC General STICU in Charleston, WV.

She was a 1961 graduate from Stonewall Jackson High School; and a 1965 graduate of West Virginia University with a B.S. in Microbiology and in 1967 with a M.S. in Microbiology.

After graduation Jeanette taught Microbiology at Bethany College for 2 years before joining the West Virginia DHHR in the Training and Certification Section of the State Hygenic Laboratory before retiring in 1999 with 29 years service. While at Bethany College she taught Microbiology to the inmates at the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, W. Va.

Jeanette was a long time member of Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charleston, serving as an elder and as the Clerk of Session.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Waneda (Rabel) Snodgrass; grandparents, Henry and Gladys Rabel; and infant brother, Earl.

Jeanette is survived by her husband of 35 years, Earl Billingsley, son, Rick Billingsley (Laura Howie) and grandchildren, Bryn and Jackson.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018, at the Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Christina Tutterow officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions to Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, 317 Washington Street W., Charleston, West Virginia 25302.

 

Carl McClure

Carl McClure, 77, of Lansing, Michigan, formerly of Murray, Kentucky went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, December 25, 2017 with his family by his side.

He was a 1958 graduate of Duval High School. Carl was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Buchanan, TN and a retired operator for Dana Corp. in Lansing, MI.

Carl was predeceased by his wife, Wava McClure; parents, Frank Leslie and Zadie Breedlove McClure; brothers, Roger “Swammie”, Frank “Gus”, Victor, M. G. and Rex McClure; and sisters, Lois LaRue and Sarah Carthrae.

He is survived by his daughter Rhonda (Tom) Price, of Hastings, MI, grandson Adam (Chelsey) Jones, great-grandson Colt Jones, grandson Aaron Clark, great-grandson Tanner McClure-Clark, son Kevin McClure, of Charlotte, MI and granddaughter Ellen Salmons.

Service will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 29, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Marcie Skiles

Marcie Skiles, 60, of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Christmas Day, December 25, 2017.

She was predeceased by her parents, Shorty and Mary Ennis; and brother, Michael.

Marcie was a loving mother, grandmother and sister and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Amber (John) Sloan; sister, Sherry (David Clarke) Jones; grandchildren, Christina, Cody and Devin; and nephew, Timmy (Allie).

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Emma Louise Thornhill Snodgrass

Emma Louise Thornhill Snodgrass, 92, of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord Christmas Day, December 25, 2017 at Hubbard Hospice West in South Charleston, WV.

She was a former member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Louise was preceded in death by her husbands Lee Thornhill and Fred Snodgrass; parents, Murl and Ethel Gillispie; and daughter, Darleen Hickey.

She is survived by her children, Oren (Sandra) Thornhill and Joyce Luella (John) Moore; grandchildren, Christopher Thornhill, Stephen Lee Milton, William Lee Robinson and Elizabeth Bradshaw; great grandchildren, Reese and Ashton Thornhill; and loving nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 28, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Gillispie-Hudson Cemetery in Alum Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Claude Thomas Young

Claude Thomas Young, Sr., 85, of South Charleston, went home Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at Thomas Memorial  Hospital.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed & Dorothy Young, brother, John Young and sister, Linda Hill.

He was the area service man for AEP with 37 years service where he was well known as “the power company man”.  He served in the US Army during the Korean War, coached little league baseball in Ruthdale, loved WVU football, hunting at the cabin, and most of all spending time with family.  He was a member of South Charleston Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patty Jo, sons, Tom (Denise Beard) Young, Jr., Mark (Renee) Young and David (Tricia) Young; grandchildren, Justin (Jessica) Young, Ashton (Drew) Holbrook, Ryan, Brett, David, Grant and Sean Young; and great-grandchildren, Keith Rose, Savannah and Connor Young He is also survived by his brothers, Jim Young, R.E. “Gene” Young, M.D., and Jack Young; sisters, Jane Bowling and Mary Bobbitt, and sister-in-law, Patty Ann Young.

In the words of his favorite granddaughter, Ashton: There has never been a better man to walk this earth.  He was the kindest, gentlest, strongest man I’ve ever known.  He was my very biggest fan, and I his.  He loved his family and worshipped the ground my grandmother walked on until the very end.  He taught us life lessons and taught us to play games.  He didn’t believe in taking his shoes off in the house.  He did believe in singing, cigars, giving compliments, deer hunting, and dippin’ eggs.  I’ll always cherish the time spent sitting together on the porch swing and ‘helping’ him work in his shed.  Nothing was better than piling in the trailer connected to the tractor with Brett and Ryan and riding to the gas station to get slushees and candy.  It’s hard to imagine I won’t hug him again or hear him say, “There’s my girl!” every time I visit.  I’ll miss him more than words can possibly say.  We love you, Papaw.  “He loved us not because we were lovable, but because he is love.”

Mary Elizabeth Pauley

Mary Elizabeth Pauley, 90, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 17, 2017, after a long illness.  Mary retired from Textile Mills, Spring Hill, and was a member of Alum Creek Church of Christ.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Aquilla and Gladys Belcher, husband, Paul E. Pauley and daughter, Joyce Kirk, and son Barry Edward. 

She is survived by her sons, Larry (Nancy) Pauley of Sod, and David (Vicki) Pauley of South Charleston; grandchildren, Craig (Jennifer) Pauley of Sandy Ridge, NC, Bruce (Karrah) Pauley, Lesli (Matthew) Smith, and Betsy (Jason) Walker all of South Charleston; great-grandchildren, Chasity (Dr. Donald) Brescia of Clemmons, NC, Ryan Smith, Tristan Walker, Riley Pauley and Isabella Pauley all of South Charleston and great great-grandchildren, Brynn and Riese Brescia, step great-grandchildren, Justin and Jade Britt, and son-in-law, David Kirk of Alum Creek. 

She is also survived by her sisters, Helen (Eugene) Williams, June Markgraff, Wanda (George) Kennedy, brothers, Edward Belcher, Richard (Jewell) Belcher, sisters-in-law, Elsie Pauley and Shirley Pauley, along with several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Cheryl Belcher. 

Service will be 2:00pm Thursday, December 21, 2017, with visitation one hour prior to the service at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman and Pastor Daniel Dent officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Pallbearers will be family and friends. 

The family gives a special thank you to Chuck, Lisa, Bobby and all the staff at Valley Center for the wonderful care given to Mom these past 4 years.

Joy Roberts

Joy Vernalaine Roberts, 81, of Sneads Ferry, N.C., formerly of Yawkey, died Sunday, December 10, 2017, at her home, with her children by her side.

Joy was the daughter of the late Aubrey and Lena (Lovejoy) Ryan. She retired from WV Housing Development Fund as an Operations Manager / Underwriter in Loan Originations. She was admired and respected by her colleagues and was sought by many underwriting agencies throughout the country, but chose her West Virginia home and family over career opportunities. Joy was a member of the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church and the Kanawha Valley Decorative Artists. She loved her homemaking role and had many talents, but decorative painting was her passion and gifted many of her works of art.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Kyle Roberts; sister, Emma (Ryan) Chapman; and dear friends, Oneta (Messinger) Pack and Pauline Rymer.

Survivors include one son, Kyle Allen Roberts, and one daughter, Kylena Roberts, both of Holly Ridge, N.C.; one grandson, Jason Roberts; four great – grandchildren, Josie Roberts, Elijah Roberts, Sophie Glass and Tatum Roberts; one great – great – grandchild, Ayla Roberts; one sister, Peggy (Charles) Kuhl; and loving caregivers, Vanessa Jenkins and Maureen Thompson.

She missed West Virginia, family, friends and church family immensely, and wanted to return home.

On Saturday, December 16, at Forks Coal Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek, family will receive friends between 11 a.m. and noon, and the funeral will immediately follow. Burial will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

 

James Carl Butler Jr.

James Carl Butler, Jr., 63, Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord his Savior, on Sunday, December 10, 2017. He was born in Charleston, WV, on February 28, 1954, to the late James Carl Butler, Sr., and Wilma Lou McDonald Wiley Butler.

He was a graduate of Charleston High School and a former water treatment opertor at Tornado PSD and Lincoln PSD. He was a member of Olive Baptist Church in Julian, WV. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara Wiley, Mary Stover, Thelma James, Norma James, Kyletta Shaffer and Cathy Angel.

James is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Martha Faye Dunlap Butler, children, Travis (Allison) Butler, Candice (Jeffrey) Baldwin, James (Leanna) Butler, Cory (Courtney) Butler, Crystal Young, and Shawna Dodrill, brother, Charles (Jane) Wiley; sisters, Margaret (Rick) Mason, Yvonne (Johnny) Gunnoe and grandchildren, Ashley, Travis Jr., Ariel, Makayla, Cade, Emily, and Brinklee.

Service will be 2:00pm Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Old Pine Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Anna Lou Cassle

Anna Lou Cassle, 84, of Yawkey passed away Thursday, December 7, 2017 at home surrounded by loved ones with her favorite Elvis song playing.

She was an active member, piano player, secretary and youth leader at Beech Grove Baptist Church.

Anna Lou retired from Beneificial Finance as a Finance Manager and from Chase Bank as a Collection Agent. She spent her retirement traveling with her best friend and soul mate, Nat Cassle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nat; daughter, Faith; parents, Fred and Flossie Ryan; sisters, Lois, Ada, Trudy and Iola; and brothers, Curtis, Eugene and Kenny.

Anna Lou is survived by her caregivers and beloved nieces, Tammy Lowery Presley, Sunny Hicks Jackson, Kati Presley, Symone Walker and many more loved family and friends.

Service will be 6:30 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

A committal service will be noon Tuesday, December 12, at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey.

 

Peter Wolfgang Stolz

Peter Wolfgang Stolz, 70, of Alum Creek went home to the Lord surrounded by family and friends Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Boone Memorial Hospital in Madison.

He is survived by daughters, Eva (D.J.) Warner and Julie (Jeremy) Johnson; and grandchildren, Hannah, Karrah, Kevin, Hayden, Ryan and Jane Ellen.

Service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 10, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Isaiah Hatfield and Ron Scott officiating. Burial will follow at the Hill Cemetery in Julian.  The family will receive friends one  hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
