Chapman Allen, 70, of Julian, died Sunday, June 29, 2008.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Priscilla Hager.

He was retired from Lions Oil Co. and Westmoreland Coal Co.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn K.;

3 sons: Bobby and Wayne of Julian and Danny of Milton;

Daughter: Regina Wilburn of Sumerco;

2 Brothers: Steve of Huntington and Timmy of Alum Creek;

2 Sisters: Goldie Messer of Sod, and Patty Hensley of St.Albans;

16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren

A funeral service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 2, at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Rev. Tony Williams officiating. Burial will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle. Family and

friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Patty L. Spaulding 65, of Tornado died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital,  South  Charleston after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by children, Todd Lewis Miller, April Dawn Miller & Kevin Miller.

She was the owner and operator of Alum Creek Feed and Seed Store for several years.

She is survived by:

Husband: William, “Squirmy”

Sister: Virginia (Rudy) Pauley  of Sod

Nephews: Dale (Beverly) Pauley of Alum Creek

Rick (Yvonne) Pauley of Sod

Special friend: Chris “Goober” Morris

Service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be in Lively Cemetery, Sod.  Friends may gather Monday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Janie Lorraine Hitchcock Dunlap Smith

Janie L. Smith, 52, of Hamlin died Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at the Hospice House in Huntington following a valiant battle with melanoma, her second brave fight with cancer.

She was a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend.

Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her father John and brother Danny.

She is survived by her mother, Jane of Hamlin; son, Jamie McClure of Barboursville; daughters, Christina (Roger Cooper) Dunlap of Hamlin and Paula Dunlap of Charleston; Brothers, Mark of Ft. Pierce, Florida; Johnny of Poca; Ralph of Sissonville; Dennis of Alum Creek; and Rick of Newark, Ohio; Special friend, Rosemary McCallister of McCorkle.

Ms. Smith is also survived by numerous aunts and uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A service to celebrate Ms. Smith life will be 1:00 PM Saturday, June 28, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at the Lively Cemetery at Sod. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Janie was a blessing in our life and will be sadly missed. Although her time on earth was untimely short, her love will remain in our hearts for eternity.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of Huntington and to the angels of the Hospice House for taking such wonderful care of our loved one.

John S. Rife, Sr.

John S. Rife, Sr., 74, of Sumerco, WV died Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at home after a short illness.

He was born December 14, 1933 to the late Samuel & Lucy Watson Rife of Davis Creek, So. Charleston.  He served in the USMC from 1953-56 during the Korean Conflict where he received several medals.  He was a retired stone and brick mason and heavy equipment operator.  He attended the Church of God at Davis Creek.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years: Phyllis Keeling Rife

Son: John Jr., & wife, CJ, of Sumerco

2 Daughters: Angelea & husband, Kevin Lovejoy of Sumerco

Stephanie & husband, Jay Easter of St. Albans

Six devoted grandchildren: Steven Ray & Joshua Dale Adkins

Desarae Nicole and Dillon Jay Easter

Jeremy Lee Sayers

Two Sisters: Dorothy Samples of St. Albans

Service will be  2:00 pm Friday, June 27, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be in French Cemetery.  Friends may gather 1 hour prior the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue,

Dunbar, WV 25064.

Shelton Smith

Shelton Smith 89 of Sod, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008 in CAMC’s MICU, with his family by his side after a long illness.

He was a member of Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, a former trustee of McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church, A UMWA Member and retired from Westmoreland Coal Co.,.  He was preceded in death by his parents and 8 brothers & sisters.

He leaves behind his wife of over 50 years, Edna

Son: Kevin & his wife Geraldine (Gerry)

A special nephew and niece, Jeff & Angie Treadway, who were with him till the very end, and

Martha Butler as well as several more nephews & nieces.

Special friends Paul & Barbara Bowman.

He loved the simple things in life, beans & cornbread, a walk on a sunny day, or watching the wind blow in the trees.  The family would like to thank the nursing staff of CAMC’s MICU for their care and support during a very difficult time.

Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel , 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating.  Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park at So Charleston,.   Friends may gather 1 hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Arbutus Sue Clark

Arbutus Sue Clark, 61, of Sumerco, went home to the Lord, Saturday, June 21, 2008 at CAMC General after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her brother Bernard Miller and was a member of the Ely Baptist Church.

She is survived by her, husband Bobby, sons, Bobby and wife Cheryl, Dale, John and wife Lisa, Joey and wife Wanda, Tommy and wife Lynn and Justin Clark all of Alum Creek. Sisters, Valie Cobb, Dean McCallister and Sadie Miller all of Alum Creek. Brother Johnny of Long of Alum Creek.

20 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 3:00 PM Wednesday June 25, at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Robert McCallister officiating. Burial will be at the Miller Family Cemetery at Ely. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Billy Ray Bartram

Billy Ray Bartram, Sr., 53, of Belle, died Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

He was a disabled coal miner, a member of the UMWA and an U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan Allen Bartram.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Belle; former wife, Betty Bartram of Alum Creek; son, Billy Bartram, Jr. and daughter, Miranda Lynn Bartram both of Alum Creek; parents, Charles and Alta Bartram of Blair; four brothers, Larry Bartram and James Grover Bartram both of  Blair, Gary Bartram of Williamson and Eddie Bartram of Alum Creek; one sister, Diana Prichard of Ripley and many other family members and friends.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW post #4768 will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod.  Friends may gather from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Drema Kay Eskew

Dreama Kay Eskew, 56, of Alum Creek, died Thursday, June 12, 2008 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a long illness.

She was a member of the Hilltop Baptist Church, South Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hershel and Wanda Short and brother, Kenneth Wayne Short.

She is survived by her husband, Ervin; two sons, Joseph Allen Eskew of Belle and Dale Austin Eskew of Alum Creek; daughter, Jacqueline Kay Eskew of Alum Creek; two step-daughters, Debbie Ewing of Cleveland, Ohio, Sandy Black of Brooklyn, Ohio; two sisters Patsy Ann Seabolt of Rand, and Marilyn Sue Tompa of Malden, one brother, Hershel Lee Short of George’s Creek; six step-grandchildren and one step great grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to all who loved and cared for Dreama and a very special thanks to Life Ambulance for their love and support.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Adam Lee Short officiating.  Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Peggy Ruby

Peggy Ruby, 56, of Charleston, died Thursday, June 12, 2008 at home after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her father, Milton R. Snelling, sister, Carol and brother, Jeffrey Snelling.

She is survived by her husband, Frederick; son, Ben Ruby of Charleston; mother, Imolene Snelling of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother, Milton R. Snelling, Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; she was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, Kamren and Kaneisha; many nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod.  There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service on Sunday.
