Dorothy A. Meadows, 88, of Alkol, WV, went to be with the Lord Monday, October 28, 2019 at home.

She was a member of Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo; siblings, Della Ryan, Mary Frances Antill, Dot Breedlove, Irene McClure, Marie Calhoun, Clarence and Londis McClure.

She is survived by her daughters, Joyce (Art) Taylor, Donna Jill (Mike) Saul, Laura Mallory, and Melissa (Tony) Adkins; sons, Mike (Rena) Meadows, Anthony (Beverly) Meadows, and Andrew (Laura) Meadows; 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 31, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating. Burial will follow at Meadows Family Cemetery in Alkol.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Freda Marie Baysden

Freda Marie Baysden, 93, of Brandon, Florida passed on Monday, October 21, 2019.   She was born in Charleston, West Virginia to the late Edith and James West.

She leaves behind her daughter, Julie Baysden. She now joins in Heaven her beloved husband, John McClellan Baysden; parents, Edith and James West; and sisters, Betty Lee West-Porter and Helen Louise West-Haynes. 

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2019, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV.  Family & friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Mildred F. Pauley

Mildred Fay Pauley, 79, of Poca, WV, formerly of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 26, 2019, at CAMC-Memorial.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ernest Pauley, parents, Garnet & Aileen Pauley, sister, Macel Rhodes, brothers, Charles and Hansel Pauley.

Mildred attended Maranatha Fellowship, St. Albans, she was a health care worker, and loved shopping with her girls.

She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Wood, Lynn (John) Hughes and Shelia Pauley, son, Billy (Carla) Pauley,  brother, Eugene Pauley, sisters, Paulette (Dave) Reed and Kathy Gillenwater, 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandson due in November.  She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor John Gillenwater officiating.  Burial will follow at Pauley Cemetery, South Charleston.  Family & friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

James Roy Runyan

James Roy Runyan, 91, of Alum Creek, WV, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at Kanawha Place in Charleston.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Stella, with whom he had a marraige filled with love and devotion.  Also, preceding him in death were his parents, Leslie and Orva Runyan, and his grandson, Jeremy Fletcher.  Jim was the last survivor of his brothers and sisters.

He will be deeply missed by his daughters, Linda Nelson and Sandra Fletcher (Charles); his grandchildren, Michele Milazzo (Matthew), Jason Creech (Karina), and Chad Fletcher; and great grandchildren, Leighton, Brooks, and Emerson Milazzo, and Julia Creech.

Jim lived a life of adventure and service and was always ready to travel and explore new places.  He was deeply devoted to God, family, country, and community.  He was a Navy Veteran of WWII and the Korean War.  He was a member of the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 serving on their Honor Guard at many funerals.

He also served as a Justice of the Peace, Chief of the Alum Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and Union Steward at Union Carbide, where he worked until retirement.  He and Stella traveled widely with the Wally Byam Airstream Organization and served a term as President of their West Virginia group.  Jim was a devoted member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ and he never hesitated to help and lend a hand to those in need. 

The family would like to thank the many caregivers who helped through his illness.

Funeral service will be at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with  Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park in Alum Creek with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service.

Opal Jean Turley

Opal Jean Turley, 88, of Venice, FL, formerly of Alum Creek, WV, went to be with the Lord Thursday, October 17, 2019 at Bay Breeze Health & Rehab Center, Venice, FL.

She retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Denzil “Pen” Turley; sisters, Emma, Martha, Millie, and Beulah Marie; and brothers Raymond, Robert, Odell and James Andrew.

She is survived by her son, Ted Keys; of Florida; grandson, Alan Keys and his family; and brothers, Corbett, Elmer (Deloris) and Jerry (Joyce) Stowers.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 27, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park in Alum Creek. Family & friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service.

Edward Lee “Eddie” Creighton

Edward Lee “Eddie” Creighton, 63, of South Charleston, WV, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, WV.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Hope; sons, James and Matthew Creighton; daughter, Brittany Suthard; 4 grandchildren, Triston, Lainey, Aubree and Nikole; mother, Betty Cottrell; mother-in-law, Ruth Browning; and also survived by several brothers, sisters and extended family.

Eddie was a 10 year member of the WV Army National Guard. He was a self-employed carpenter and loved the outdoors and fishing.

Kenneth Ward “Kenny” Armstead, Sr.

Kenneth Ward “Kenny” Armstead, Sr., 68, of Charleston, WV, finished his work on earth with his hands of steal and heart of gold in heaven on October 21, 2019.

He was brought into this world on August 5, 1951 to Edith and Ward Armstead.

Kenny spent his work on Earth as a loving and caring father, husband, brother, friend, and much more. He served in the U. S. Army until being honorably disabled discharged and began work in professional construction and remodeling. He was very highly regarded and trusted by those he worked for.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in passing by his sisters, Wanda Truman, Lyda Collins, Rosalie Armstead, and Sylvia Madura.

Leaving those left behind to cherish the memories are his loving wife of 49 years, Pamela; daughter, Barbara Moore of Charleston; sons, Kenneth (Letha) Armstead, Jr. of Charleston; Jonathan Bailey of Cross Lanes; sister, Shirley (Stan) Cantley of Tornado; grandchildren,Colten, identical twins Caden and Carsen Moore, Ashley (Ian) Thomas, Jessica Shamblen, Jennifer Bailey, and Ashley Lovejoy; great grandbabies, Easton Hunter, Owen and Avery Thomas and soon to arrive Baby Thomas; and many friends and family.

There is not enough ink or paper to hold the words that could be said about our missing piece. If you knew him, you loved him. If you met him, you never forgot him. So many memories filled with love and laughter. No longer here, but forever in our hearts.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 25, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Chris Riggs officiating. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes with military graveside rites.

Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The family requests that food be taken on Friday to the Union Point Event and Conference Center, 5315 Koontz Dr., Cross Lanes, WV, where a dinner will be held after the service.

Maxwell Lawrence Hill, Jr.

Maxwell Lawrence Hill, Jr., 70, of St. Albans, WV, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 18, 2019.   The son of the late Jimmie Hill and Christine McLaughlin, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Janie Meadows.

Max was a 1967 graduate of Scott High School and a graduate of Fairmont State University.  Called to the ministry, he earned a Masters degree and Doctor of Ministry degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC.

His work for the Lord began in 1981 at Pine Ridge Baptist Church in Zebulon, NC, where he first served as pastor.  Then he went to First Baptist Church of Jonesville, NC, where he also served as volunteer chaplain for the athletic teams at Starmount High School in Boonville, NC.  Max returned to West Virginia in 2001 where he became pastor at Clarksburg Baptist Church in Clarksburg, WV.

Later, he served as area minister and associate executive director for the West Virginia Baptist Convention.  He was also previously interim pastor of Crab Orchard Baptist Church and currently served as interim pastor of First Baptist Church of Danville.

In 2009, Max’s work with the West Virginia Baptist Convention resulted in his relocating in St. Albans.  He is a member of Oakwood Baptist Church in Charleston. 

Max’s call to serve led him to take on mission work in Cuba.  He began traveling to the island country in 1991 and returned every year after.  His plan was to return in December 2019.  This work was dear to his heart and Max loved the many people he met in Cuba who welcomed him through Christ.

Max was pastor emeritus of the El Jordan Baptist Church in Havana, Cuba.

Max was a family man, loved his wife and daughter, was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds and enjoyed many Friday nights on the sidelines at Starmount football games as well as coaching first base for the baseball team.

He is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Debbie Bell Hill; daughter, Melinda (Brian) Greathouse of Dunbar; sisters, Barbara (Jack) Bays of Elkview and Joyce (Bill) Saul of Morrisvale.

Visitation will be Friday, October 25, from 6-8 p.m. at Oakwood Baptist Church, 855 Oakwood Road, Charleston, WV,  and 2 hours prior to the service on Saturday.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 26, at the church with Pastors David Carrico, David Hulme, and David Moutz officiating.   Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

Barbara Sue Kitchen

Barbara Sue Kitchen, 78, of Yawkey, WV, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston.

She was a member of the Sumerco Church of God.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 60 years, Mason; son, Mason Lee (Mary Beth) Kitchen and Cynthia Fawn Parsons (Bill Massie); sisters, Jane McClean of South Fulton, TN, Peggy Huggins of Manford, TN, Patsy Hotten of Fargo, ND; brother, Barry Parks of Walnut, MS; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.


Service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Chapmanville.


The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Ned Midkiff

Ned Midkiff, 86, of Tornado, WV, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

He was a retired equipment operator from IUOE Local 132. Ned enjoyed farming and was a Christian.

Ned was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; granddaughter, Wanda Michelle Midkiff; parents, Foster and Thelma Smith Midkiff; sisters, Ruth Justice, Cornie Barker, Dollie Allen, Jean Midkiff and Jane Blankenship; and brother, John Midkiff.

He is survived by his son, Todd (Missy) Midkiff; daughter Gail (Mark) Midkiff; grandchildren, Alex, Greg and Hunter; sister Barbara Linville; and brother, Homer (Brenda) Midkiff.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. burial will follow at Smith Cemetery at Island Creek.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
