Louise Cornell Gillenwater, 84 of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord Monday, June 21, 2004 at home after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband Guy.

She was a member of the Sumerco Church of God.

She is survived by her daughters: Flora Painter of Sumerco with whom she made her home; Joan Harvey of Yawkey; 7 Sons: Ross and Ike, both of Alum Creek; Benny of Sumerco; Donnie and Buel, of both Yawkey; Jimmy of Griffithsville; Robert of Wakeman, Ohio; 3 Sisters: Faye Jeffers and Ruby Whittington, both of Buffalo; Anna Lee Toney of Branchland; 3 Brothers: Paul Cornell of Elyira, Ohio; Leonard Cornell of Lancaster, Ohio; Billy Cornell of Muskegon Heights, Michigan; 17 Grandchildren; 23 Great-Grandchildren; 1 Great-Great-Grandchild.

Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday June 24, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman, Pastor Richard McCallister and Pastor Butch Loftis officiating. Burial will be in the Orchard Hills Memory Gardens Yawkey. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dohnna Means Ashworth

Dohnna Means Ashworth, 69, of Alum Creek; bor July 14, 1934, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, June 19, 2004.

She is survived by her husband, Russell L. “Pete” Ashworth of Alum Creek; son, Frederick Jansohn III and wife, Kathleen; grandchildren, Kristine Coombs, Frederick N and Katy all of Alum Creek; step-son, Mark Ashworth and wife, Shannon; five grandchildren of Moses Lake, Washington; sister, and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Dr. John McGee of Cookeville, TN; mother-in-law, Mrs. Ida Mae Ashworth of Alum Creek; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Charles Evans of Charleston; Mrs. James McClure and Mrs. Darrell McMellon of Yawkey; brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ashworth of Hollywood, FL; Paul “Spike” Ashworth of Alum Creek; Lovell Ashworth of Norfolk, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Dohnna loved Jesus Christ as Savior and was a faithful member of the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church. She obtained a Masters Degree attending West Virginia University, the University of South Florida and Marshall University. Dohnna was a school teacher, having two years in the Florida system, three years in Mississippi and 25 years with Kanawha County Schools at Ruthlawn Elementary. She was a faithful witness for the Lord, and a loving companion of 30 3/4 years. Thank you sweetheart.

Friends may cal] Monday, June 21, 2004 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.
Funeral services will be held at the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00 AM Tuesday with Pastor Frank Chapman and Pastor Wallace York. Interment will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek.

Richard D. “Rick” Samples

Richard D. “Rick” Samples, 48, of St. Albans, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 after an apparent heart attack.

He was a former employee of Janitorial Services in Charleston, a graduate of St. Albans High School and an avid baseball player and fan, having pitched for St. Albans High School and played on the Eastern Little League and Babe Ruth Senior League.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, John Peanut Brown.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Brown; brother, David Samples; sister, Kimberly C. Kidd; half sister, Karen Leach; half brother, Tim Samples; step-sons, Chris and Chad Everett; former companion, Sharon Roberts and one step-grandson.

Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Ron Crum officiating. Burial will held in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, St. Albans. Friends may call two hours prior to service at the funeral home.

John A. Barnette

John A. Barnette, 92, of So. Charleston went home to be with the Lord Monday, June 14, 2004 at Select Speciality Hospital in Charleston.

John was retired from Smith Transfer with 19 years service and was a member of Dunbar Mountain Mission. For the past ten years John performed Missionary work in Mexico with Valley Baptist Retreat located in Mission, Texas.

He is survived by his wife: Janet ; 4 Daughters: Denise Dixon, Melissa Given, Barbara Wainwright & Francis Gilbert ; 1 Sister: Ruth Barker; 9 Grandchildren; 25 Great-Grandchildren; 2 Great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00 am Friday, June 18, 2004 at the Dunbar Mountain Mission , 605 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, with Pastor Ron Fisher &Pastor Billy Lucas officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park at Dunbar. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday at the Dunbar Mt. Mission. Curry Funeral Home at Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements. Alma Beatrice Coleman Armstrong

Alma Beatrice Coleman Armstrong, 83, of South Charleston, peacefully left this life behind on Saturday, June 12, 2004 at Tender Heart Home Care in South Charleston from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born in Mohawk, West Virginia and graduated from Yeager High School. After attending nursing school in Baltimore, Maryland, she moved to Beckley, West Virginia and worked at the Pinecrest Sanatorium where she met her husband. Later she and her family moved to Oak Hill, West Virginia where they lived for many years. Tn 1962 she moved to South Charleston and lived there until her death.

Alma was employed for 32 years by J. Loren Smith, DO at Alum Creek Medical Center. She was a very special friend to many people in that community. After retiring in 1994 she became a volunteer for Hospice Care. In 1998 she was awarded the honor of being named West Virginia Outstanding Citizen by the governor of the state.
She was a member of the Oak Hill Methodist Church and then the Darlington Methodist Church of South Charleston.

Preceding her in death are her mother, Cinda Hatfield Smith; and her husband of almost 50 years, George S. Armstrong.

She is survived by her two sons and their wives, William and Diana Armstrong of Colora, MD, and George and Sheila Armstrong of Ripley, WV; two daughters and their husbands, Margaret “Cindy” and Dennis Clendenin of Sissonville, WV; and Beatrice and Martin Dotson of South Charleston; grandchildren, Brian Clendenin of Sissonville, Cherie Litton of Sissonville, and Eric Clendenin of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Jason and Brock Armstrong of Ripley, Tommy Armstrong of Colora, and Marinda Dotson of Lexington, KY; one great-grandson; and one step great-grandson.

The family like to express their sincere appreciation to Priss Johnson and daughters, Aimee McNurlen and Belva Wolfe, and employee, Charlotte Hall of Tender Heart Home Care for the special care and attention they gave to our precious Mother, allowing us to take advantage of the good times.

Graveside service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at Graceland Memorial Park South Chazleston with Pastor Robert Leadman officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM Monday at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. She will be buried beside her husband. “Our loving parents, together again, rest.” The family suggests donations to Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064.

Nina Lou McCoy, 77, of Sod died Thursday, June 10, 2004 at CAMC Memorial Division after a long illness.

She was retired from WV Health &Human Resources and a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Sod.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest S. McCoy; parents: Rev. Amold E. & Comie Hughes and 6 sisters.

She is survived by: 1 Son: Victor Hughes of Chazlotte, NC; 2 Daughters &son-in-law: Teresa &John Callahan and Beth Leontopolulos all of Sod; Special friend: Melinda Hefner of Charlotte; 9 Grandchildren; 3 Great Grandchildren.

Service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman and Pastor Mike Kordusky officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Nina was loved by all and will be sadly missed.

Paul Stephen Mallory

Service will be 5:00 PM Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Dr. Phil Suiter officiating. Burial will be Monday at 2:00 PM at Miller Family Cemetery, Alkol. Friends may call Sunday from 3-5 PM at the funeral home.

Dr. Rev. LeRoy M. Keeney

Dr. Rev. LeRoy M. Keeney, 83, of St. Albans, died at home on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, after a long illness.

He was retired as pastor from the Highlawn Baptist Church, having served from 1949 unti11986. Following his retirement, Rev. Keeney served as interim minister for The First Baptist Church of Dunbar, the Main Street Baptist Church of Point Pleasant and at Calvary Baptist Church in Charleston.

He graduated from Charleston High School, attended Alderson Broaddus College, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Moms Harvey College in 1943. In 1946 he graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Alderson Broaddus College in 1973 and served as a member of its Board of Trustees for over 10 years.

Rev. Keeney served as president of the West Virginia Baptist Convention in 1965, its centennial year. For over 30 years he was a member of the West Virginia Baptist Executive Board. He served over 25 years as president of the West Virginia Baptist Education Society, which grants 50 scholarships annually to students preparing to enter the ministry. Rev. Keeney was a founder of the St. Albans Ministerial Association and served as its president. He was a member of the St. Albans Rotary Club and also served as its president. He was chairman of the first committee to develop the Parchment Valley Conference Center. For many years he was a volunteer chaplain at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Rev. Keeney is survived by his wife of 62 years, Theresa Knapp Keeney; daughter, Rebecca Palmer and her husband, John, of Charleston; son, Stanley Keeney and his wife Martha, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; beloved grandchildren Morgan Griffith and her husband, Dave, of Charleston; Campbell Palmer and his wife, Suzanne, of Falls Church, Virginia; Mary Beth Keeney and her fiance Chad Gunerra, and Brian Keeney of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and great grandchildren Amanda Jane and Michael Griffith, and Jack Palmer. His last surviving sister is Mrs. Wirt (Frankie) Harmon of Paris, Tennessee.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 12, 2004 at the Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans with the Rev. Joe Hyde and Rev. Cyril Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM Friday at the church.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Virginia Baptist Education Society, c/o Dr. Lawrence Hoptry, Corresponding Secretary, PO Box 248, Nitro, West Virginia 25143, or to the Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans, West Virginia 25177. The family expresses thanks to Hospice for its care of Rev. Keeney.

Dorothy Mae Ellen Taylor

Dorothy Mae Ellen Taylor, 53, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at home after a long illness.

She was direct care staff for REM Community Options of St. Albans, a graduate of Charleston High School, attended the Maranatha Fellowship, St. Albans and was a former employee of Shawnee Hills, Charleston.

She is survived by her sisters, Jean “Sissy” Taylor of Charleston, Carolyn Lee Songer of South Charleston, and Vicky L. Henry and husband, Mike of St. Albans; one niece, two nephews, two great nieces and one great nephew.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Friday, June 11, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Minister Michael Downs officiating. Friends may call on Friday, June 11, 2004 at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Rd. Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.

Hilda Lee Morns Williams

She was preceded in death by her sons, Terry and James Hatfield; daughter, Jennifer Nicholas sisters, Ida Jane Williams and Peggy Steele.

She is survived by her son, Danny Moms of Georgia; brother, Edward “Brother” Wheeler of Sumerco; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
