Ocie W. Hill, 98, of Dunbar, formerly of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Sunbridge of Dunbar after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Ada Banks Turley; husband, Estel; and son, Denver.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Dunbar.

She is survived by her son, Donald C. Hill of Alum Creek; daughter in law, Geraldine Hill of Dunbar; grandson, Michael Hill; two great granddaughters; six great great grandchildren; one great great great grandson; one niece and one nephew; sister in law, Nina Turley of Alum Creek.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastors Tom Stephens and Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek. Friends will gather one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.  The family wishes to give a special thanks to Sunbridge of Dunbar and Kanawha Hospice for special, tender care and kindness shown to Ocie.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First Baptist Church of Dunbar at 16th St. and Myers Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064 or to Kanawha Hospice, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25312-2536.

Bernard Lea Harper

Bernard Lea Harper, 61, of Alum Creek, passed away February 28, 2009 at home after a long illness.  Bernard was born on February 10, 1948 in Fayette County, West Virginia. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a member of the 82nd Airbourne. He served a tour in Vietnam where he was a POW and received a Bronze Star. He was a kind and generous man who loved his family and friends. He was a very loving and devoted husband.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Sandra; son, Eric Harper; daughters, Gena and Ashley Elliott; step-sons, Gary Wayne, Christopher, and Michael McLaughlin, Bill, James, and Anthony Thomas; step-daughter, Paula Thomas; 24 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Johnnie and Debbie Chandler.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Tommy Roberts officiating. Burial will be held in the Brounland Family Cemetery, Alum Creek. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service on Thursday.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial contributions be made to the funeral home.

Asher Paul Spurlock

Asher Paul Spurlock, one day old infant son of Jordan and Melinda Spurlock, went home to God’s nursery at Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital from complications during delivery on Friday.  He is also survived by his two brothers, Jakob James Whitlock and Aaron Lee Parsons; grandparents, Jane and Ed Jackson, Kathy Parsons, Jim Parsons and David Spurlock and Cindy Lowery; great grandparents, Mildred Gum, Sue Foster and Gene Parsons; many aunts, uncles and cousins.  A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday February 27, 2009 at Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar, with Pastor Clarence Hutton officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to IvyDale Baptist Church, Rt. 2, Box 479, Charleston, WV 25314 in memory of Asher.

Louana D. McCracken

Louana D. McCracken, 77, of St. Albans passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Ruby Derrick, her daughter Kathy Jeane, and her childhood caretaker Lena Dial.

She leaves behind her husband of 57 years, Paul W. “Jack” McCracken, son and daughter-in-law Robert and Debra McCracken of St. Albans, daughter Karen Campbell of St. Albans. Grandchildren Kristen Shockey (Steve), Wendi Mathews, Allison McCracken, Christopher Campbell and Michael Campbell all of St. Albans.  Louana was born on July 16, 1931 in Charleston. She lived her entire life in the Kanawha Valley. She was an honor student and graduate of South Charleston High School, class of 1948. Louana was briefly employed by Union Carbide. Louana had many talent and was a lover of music. She especially loved playing the piano and organ.

Louana was a member of the Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans for over 53 years. She was very active in the sanctuary choir, church circle groups, Sunday School and a variety of other church activities. Louana loved her family and was devoted to the school, church and sports activities of her children and grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 1, at Highlawn Baptist Church 2304 Jefferson Ave. St. Albans with Pastor Reverend Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park St. Albans. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 PM Saturday at the Highlawn Baptist Church.

James H. (Pump) Pauley

James H. (Pump) Pauley, Jr. III, 53 of Alum Creek went home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, February 25, 2009.  He was a graduate of Duval High School, was a member of UMWA District 17 and a beloved member of McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his mother Eleanor Dunlap and father James H. Pauley, Jr.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sandy A. Pauley, cherished son Derek, sisters Suzi Pauley of Sod and Anita Maroney (Pat) of Charleston, brother Mike Pauley (Suzanne) of Peachtree, Georgia, brothers and sisters-in-law, Sue Huffman, Jack and Rissa Banks, Jack and Susie Holstein all of Alum Creek, John and Judy Dunlap, Tammy Holstein all of Sod, Gwen and Charlie Gustafson of Montana, Paula Peters of Simpsonville, South Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends and church family including his heaven sent “Big Mom” Sophia Hensley.

He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  I  have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith… By His stripes I am healed.  Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Sunday at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek, with Pastors Roe Smith and John Gorrell officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens Yawkey. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 9 PM Saturday at the funeral home.  The family would like to thank Dr. Tom Takubo and all the MICU staff at CAMC for their compassionate and outstanding care of our dearest loved one. Also longtime friend and physician Dr. Scott Smith.

Alma June Fouts Stone Robinson

Alma June Fouts Stone Robinson, 64, of Charleston died suddenly Thursday, February 12, 2009.  Alma has traveled home to be with the Lord and her lovely husband Jackie L. Robinson, Sr.  She was a longtime employee with St. Francis Hospital where she shared the tremendous amount of love and compassion she had to offer.  She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church who recently became a deaconess and was excited about helping others find their way to the Lord as she did when she was saved at Calvary Baptist Church. She was a longtime member of the Eagles 519 Club where she was often referred by her friends as ma. Alma shared a passion with Jack in classic car’s and often shared that passion with other members of the Klassy Kruzers in Dunbar. Alma was a strong willed woman with a heart of gold. She will be sadly missed by all. She will be missed mostly by her three children whom she had a extremely very close relationship with.

She is survived by her children, David Anthony Stone V of Charleston, Beth Ann (Khalid) El-Shamy of Perrysburg, Ohio and Michael Andrew (Angela) Stone of Cross Lanes. Sister-in-Laws, Laura Hill, Patricia Nance, Sharon Fouts, Sheila Hill Sturm and special Aunt Toot’s. Grandchildren, Nicholas A. (Erica) Stone, David A. Stone VI, Jacob L. Smailes, Ashton-Kayte E. Smailes, Hanya K. El-Shamy, Austin Michael, Tarique-Jabrielle El-Shamy, Summer Michelle Stone and great grand daughter Fayth-Olivia M. Stone.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church 510 Maryland Avenue, Charleston with Pastor Reverend Mark Newland officiating. Burial will be at Forks of Coal Cemetery at Alum Creek. Friends will gather from 6 to 9 PM Monday at the Calvary Baptist Church

Bob Pauley

Bob Pauley, 77 of Garrettsbend, Sod, son of Talmadge and Mamie Pauley, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2009 at home from complications of COPD.  He was a 1950 graduate from Duval High School, and went on to serve proudly in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict, was a member of the Benney Padilla VFW Post 4768 at Alum Creek where he participated in the award-winning Color Guard and was a member of the Peytona Church of Christ.  He was a strong , loving influence in all our lives, and he will be saddly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley, children, Cindy McKinney and husband Charles, Robert Pauley and wife Linda, Teresa Symmes and husband Lew, Sherry Roberts and husband Alan, and Melissa. Grandchildren, Alicia, Apphia, Gabe, Joel, Dorian, Deserea, Destiny, Katy and Cole, Great-Grandchild Tahlee. He is also survived by his brother Ray and sister Susie and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Donnie Pauley and Charles McKinney officiating. Burial will military rites conducted by the Venney Padilla VFW Post 4768 will be at the Pauley Family Cemetery Garrettsbend. Friends may gather from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at the funeral home.

Alice V. Gillenwater

Alice V. Gillenwater, 87, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord on February, 10, 2009 at Hubbard Hospice House. She was born on October 3, 1921 at Alum Creek.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald and by her parents, Jim and Elsie Bowman.  She was the youngest of three sisters that also preceded her in death. They were Elsie Faye Frye and Ruby “Jack” Hill and a niece, Linda Stowers.  She was a former employee of Libby Owens and was well known for her home cooking especially her apple pie.  Alice was a life long member of the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church where she served for 43 years as the church treasurer.

She is survived by three nieces, Patsy (Roger) Wheeler, Sue Childress, Nancy (Johnny) Matthews, all of Alum Creek and a nephew, Jimmy (Nadia) Kidd of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She is also survived by a special great niece, Laura Childress and other great nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13, 2009 at the Forks of Coal Baptist Church, Alum Creek, with Pastors Robert “Butch” Leadman, Jody Pistore, Frank Chapman and Keith George officiating. Burial will be held in the Forks of Coal Memorial Park , Alum Creek.  Friends will be received at the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek, on Thursday between 6 and 8 p.m. and on Friday, one hour prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Alice’s name may be made to the Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.

Dica Edith (Dunlap) Glenn

Dica Edith (Dunlap) Glenn, 88, of Passaic, New Jersey, formerly of Brounland, died on Sunday, February 8, 2009. Born in Charleston, Dica lived in West Virginia and was a resident of Passaic for many years.  Dica worked for St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, for nine years, retiring in 1982. She was the beloved wife of the late, Thomas Glenn, who died in 1984.

She was the devoted mother of Roger Dunlap (Adelina) and Thomas Glenn (Debbie), all of Clifton, New Jersey, Roscoe Dunlap of Zephyrhills, Florida and John Glenn (Nancy) of Dover, Delaware; dear sister of, Nicholas Dunlap of Ohio, Julia Kirk and Ethel Tucker, both of Rural Retreat, Virginia; loving grandmother of 9 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 13, 2009, at Curry Funeral Home, 2090 Childress Rd., Alum Creek, with Pastor Rick Harless and Eddie Belcher officiating. Burial will be in Fox Hill Cemetery, South Charleston. Friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, donations made to the American Cancer Society, 20 Mercer St., Hackensack, NJ 07601, would be greatly appreciated
