Mary Jane Barrett Wheeler, 80, of Alum Creek, died Sunday, May 30, 2004 at the Lincoln Continuous Care Center in Hamlin after a long illness.

She was a life long resident of Alum Creek.

She is survived by her: Daughter: Loretta Watts of San Jose, California; 2 Grandchildren: Perry Watts and Jerie Watts Robles both of California; 2 Great Grandchildren: Colby Watts and Jessica Robles, both of California.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in the Crouch Cemetery at Tornado. Friends may call one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Ronald  “Jessie” McCallister, 75, of Sod died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at CAMC Memorial Division in Charleston after a short illness.

He was an auto mechanic for 20 years and a corporal in the U. S. Army serving in Germany during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nadine; daughter, Karen Mansfield, son, Ronnie McCallister seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; brother, James C. Woods.

Services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Roe Smith officiating. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery at Sweetland with military graveside rites by the Benny Padilla VFW Post #4768. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM on Monday at the funeral home.

James E. Belcher, 83, of Tornado, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at the VA Medical Center, Huntington, after a long illness.

He was a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ, a retired Master Electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers of Chazleston and a Navy veteran of WWII.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Virginia and Delores and son, James Allen Belcher.

He is survived by his daughters, Lynn Rinchich of Chazleston, Rita Miller of Foster; son, Jack Belcher of Ashford; step-daughter, Dorothy McCombs of Tornado; sisters, Doris Escue, Wilma Bradshaw, Barbara Ruby all of Sod, Helen McClure of Yawkey; 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Minister Richard Runyan and Minister Justin heel officiating. Burial will beheld in Hayzlett Cemetery, Ganetts Bend. Friends may call on Friday, May 28, 2004 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Thomas R. “Ranny” Holman, Jr., 72, of Charleston died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at V alley Center, Spring Hill, after a long illness.

He was a Korean War veteran, grew up in the Davis Creek area and later moved to Miami Beach, Florida.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Lena Hundley; father and step-mother, Thomas and Grace Holman.

He is survived by his two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Carl Parsons of Hurricane, Debbie and Don Surface of Chazleston; niece, Teri Surface; nephews, Mark Ashworth and family, Brian Surface and family; and Ron Surface.

Service will be 2:00 PM Friday, May 28, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Rev. James McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Pazk, South Charleston. Friends may call one hour prior at the funeral home on Friday.

Jack E. Thomas, 53, of South Charleston, went home to be the Lord on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 in Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a short illness.
He attended Trinity Baptist Church, Ruth. He was graduate of West Virginia State University and retired from Painters Allied Loca1970 in Charleston. Jack was a Navy veteran.

He is survived by his father, Carlotte Thomas of South Charleston; brother, Bill Thomas of Frame; sisters, Bev Seidman of New Jersey, Carla Settles of Owenton, Kentucky; niece, Christina Thomas of Morgantown; longtime friend, Diana Cunningham of Melbourne, Florida.

A memorial service will be 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 27, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. Gene Pauley officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society. Additional memorial services will beheld in Martin, Georgia and Melbourne, Florida.

Gilbert J. Holstein, 92, of Emmons died Monday, May 24, 2004 at Heartland of Charleston after a long illness.

He was a retired coal miner, a member of UMW, lifelong resident of Kanawha County.

He is survived by his sister, Nellie Armstrong of Hernshaw and several nieces and nephews.

James H. Sowers, 67, of Alum Creek, died Monday, May 24, 2004 at CAMC Memorial Division after a short illness.

He was retired from Mountaineer Enterprises with 16 years of service, was a member of the United Steelworkers loca114614 and also was a member of LU.O.C. local no. 132. James served over seas with the United States Air Force.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 48 years, Evelyn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy Jeff Miller, Stacy and Trent Miller; one son and daughter-in-law, Noia and Debbie Burgess; five grandchildren, Tiffany, Michele, Megan, April and Sara; two great grandchildren, James and Noia; three sisters, Margaret Dent, Elizabeth Arbaugh, and Janet Searls.

Services will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 27, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Paul Cogar officiating. Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Eugene G. “Dutch” Hill

Eugene G. “Dutch” Hill, 85, of St Albans passed away Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Thomas Memorial Hospital ICU.

He was an Army veteran of WWII, who was awarded the Purple Heart, and a charter member of Madison VFW Post 5578, where he served as Chaplin. He was a Baptist and had served as a Sunday School teacher and trustee. He was a member of the Tornado Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Evi and Suda Hill; brothers, Orville and Glenn; sisters, Virginia Bower and Carma Lee Miller.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Juanita Caudill Hill; two daughters and son-in-law, Eugena Karson, Elnorah and Johnny Rivers; two grandchildren, Kemmeth Rivers and Jonathan Karson and his wife, Tina Karson; two great grandchildren, Logan and Laken Karson; brother, Cecil Hill.

Service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Robert “Butch” Leadman officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans with military graveside rites provided by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768. Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 PM and also one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

She attended Charleston High School and was formerly employed by S.S. Kresge Department Store.

She was preceded in death by her father, Delmar Mays and her mother, Virgie Burgess.

She is survived by her husband, Grady D.; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Renee Stanfield and Dean; son and daughter-in-law, Russell E. Boner and Lisa; step-daughter, Frances Ann Smith; step-son, Thomas G. Boner; four grandchildren, Andrew Boner, Magen Bayes, Christopher and Josh Boner five step grandchildren; sisters, Eura Loraine Holtsclaw and Estelle Lude; brothers, Robert, Chester, Jerry Lee and Dennis Burgess.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael.

He was retired from Laborer’s Local 1353 in Charleston. He attended Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of W WII and served in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beuna; two sons and daughter-in-law, Fred and Ann Price of Danville, Alan Price of Sumerco; sisters, Louise McCormick of Charleston, Eloise Rucker of Nitro, Ruth Estep of Florida; four grandchildren, Bret, Bart, Allison and Tammy; five great grandchildren, Shane, Cory, Eric, Rebecca, and Taylor.

Service will be 1:00 PM Friday, May 21, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Robert Leadman officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.
