Iris Ann Bartholow, 52, of South Charleston, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023, at home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Ross and Patricia Ann Cope Bartholow.

She worked as manager of the Steak Escape where she was loved by all.

She is survived by her long-time boyfriend, Robbie Hackler, sister, Rita Brown, niece, Erica Bartholow and her partner, Jim Dawson, nephews, Matthew and Nathan Brown, grand-niece, Jamie Mattix and her father, Matthew Mattix, and sister-in-law, Rose Marks.

A gathering of family and friends will be 2-4 p.m., Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Fairfield Inn & Suites, 402 2nd Ave SW, Charleston, WV 25303.

Almon W. Kinder

Almon W. Kinder, 87, of Ashford, WV, went home Sunday, February 26, 2023 at CAMC-Memorial Division with his family and friends gathered around him.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, of 59 years, Beulah. Also his parents Roy and Sally Smith Kinder, siblings, Wilmon, Jane Payne, Carlos, Judy Jackson, Billy and Gary.

Almon lived a long, blessed life. He was a member of Emmons Freewill Baptist Church and loved praising the Lord. He also loved playing the guitar, gardening, canning (giving it away), ginsenging , the Boston Red Sox, his chickens and his favorite pastime was eating.

He is survived by his five children, Dora (Sammy), Clifford, Pam (Gary), Marty (Tammy), and Lora (Greg), 12 grandchildren, Jessica (Brandon), Travis, David (Catherine), Scott, Kassie, Kelsie (Cody), Bradley, Marty Dale, Samara, Nicole, Kayleigh, and Cameron, and his great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Harlow, Dakota and Leah. He is also survived by sisters, Pauline Barker, Arbutus (Bootsie) Bell, Joyce Baire, and his first cousin Jack Kinder, who was like a brother to Almon, and many nieces and nephews, in-laws, friends and His church family that he dearly loved.

Service will be 1:00pm Thursday, March 2, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Hardy officiating. Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery, Ashford. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Special thank you to his longtime doctor and friend Scott Smith and the doctors and nurses at CAMC for their wonderful care of our Daddy.

Dawn Cantley Rose

Dawn Cantley Rose, 86, of Dayton, Ohio (formerly of St. Petersburg, FL & St. Albans, WV) passed away at home peacefully, surrounded by family on February 22, 2023.

She is survived by her daughters: Sherri G. Rose of Pinellas Park, FL, Trina Rose O’Brien of Dayton, OH, & her Life Partner of 36 years, Donald Hyde of Dayton, OH (formerly of St. Petersburg, FL). Also survived by 2 sisters, Avonelle Neff & Regina Chrest (Hector) of NC & a brother, Michael Cantley (Pam) of GA, and sister-in-law Jackie Cantley of NC. She is preceded in death by brother, Walter Cantley.

In addition, she is survived by 5 grandchildren: Michael O’Brien (Taylor) of Columbus, OH, Dawn Marie Furlough (Chris) of St. Charles, MO, Brianna Hockman (Matt) of Chesapeake, VA, Tessa Thrasher (Ben) of Dayton, OH, and Seth O’Brien of Columbus, OH. Also her 10 great grandchildren: Ethan, Annie, Cantley, Meriel, Isaac, Jonah, Summer, Samuel, Asher & Avery.

Dawn was born a coal miner’s daughter to Grant & Io Cantley in Brounland, WV in 1936. A 1954 graduate of Washington District High School, she represented them as “Miss Fire Prevention”. Dawn was a classically trained pianist. As a Graduate of the Realtors Institute in Charlottesville, VA, she was co-owner of Rose Realty (WV) in the 1970’s. Dawn moved to Florida in 1978 & was employed by US Home Corporation/Lennar Homes for 25+years, where she retired.

Final arrangements made by Neptune Society & Curry Funeral Home. Memorial service & burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park Chapel, 100 Graceland Circle, South Charleston, WV 25309 on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 1:00 pm.

Jerry Keith Asbury

Jerry Keith Asbury, 84, of Summerville, SC, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023, on what would have been his and Judy’s 61st wedding anniversary. Jerry was born on May 24, 1938, in Marting, West Virginia, a son of the late Colonia F. Asbury and V. Virginia Asbury.

Jerry was a graduate of Washington District High School. He worked for Western Electric and then AT&T for 38 years, only retiring at the age 56 due to suffering a massive heart attack requiring open heart surgery. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1961-1963, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of South Charleston and was also a member of South Charleston Masonic Lodge #168 AF & AM, Scottish Rite, Charleston Beni Kedem Shrine, and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #131 of South Charleston. Jerry’s love of softball first began when he coached his daughter’s team through three consecutive undefeated regular seasons, All Stars, and held office for South Charleston Eastern Little League. He then continued his passion by umpiring at higher levels, becoming the Director of Division 3 Umpires, and by being a huge part of his oldest granddaughter’s softball career as well. Jerry shared his love of football with his grandson and his love of basketball with his youngest granddaughter. He also enjoyed playing in a golf league with his son-in-law and fellow telephone company employees. Jerry was an avid supporter of all things WVU, especially Mountaineer football and basketball, never missing a game in person or on TV, where Sherri attended college. He was a long time Nascar fan in his earlier years by attending the races with friends or family and then watching on TV in his later years.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Judy Barnett Asbury, and his brother, C. Carol Asbury.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Sherri L. Asbury-Casto (Thomas A. Casto) of Summerville, SC; grandchildren, Taylor A. Casto Morris (Spencer P. Morris) currently stationed in Santa Rita, Guam, USA, Tyler A. Casto and Skylar A. Casto, both of Summerville, SC; great-grandchildren, Easton P. Morris, Emerie M. Morris, and a great-granddaughter due in March, also currently stationed in Santa Rita, Guam, USA; nephew, Craig W. Lambert of Hagerstown, MD. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Jewel Asbury, and nieces, Janet Blankenship and Monica Sigmon.

Service will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Reverend Paul Helmick officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Walter Daniel “Danny” Lawrence, 73, of Griffithsville went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at home. II Corinthians 5:8, We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Danny was a 1967 graduate of Duval High School. A millwright by trade, he retired as a supervisor from Dow Chemical Gum Base Unit. He was a 5th generation farmer, avid outdoorsman, and a proud supporter of the Lincoln County FFA. He was a founding member of the Duval Volunteer Fire Department and coached Duval Raiders little league football. Danny was a member of the former Amy Baptist Church.

Danny was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Maxine Hartwell Lawrence; and parents, Howard and Carolyn Dunlap Lawrence.

He is survived by his children, Melissa (Eric) Smith and Brian (Christine) Lawrence both of Griffithsville; 7 grandchildren, Katelyn (Landin) Harper of Griffithsville, Shelby (Tim) Hopton of Arizona, Courtney Kidd, Ethan (Kelsie) Brogan, Megan Brogan (Tristan Loftis) all of Griffithsville, and Sydney & Evan Smith of Sissonville; 6 great grandchildren, Dylan & Carson Harper, Annastyn & Rhett Brogan, Haidyn Loftis, and Raiden Jarrett; brothers, Gene & Jimmy; sisters, Sandra & Mitzi; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

Service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Butch Loftis officiating. Burial will follow at Lawrence Family Cemetery, Griffithsville. Friends and family will gather 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Danny never ceased in prayer for those he loved, always offering a reminder of pride and a hug.

Wendella Gale “Wende” Jones, of Scott Depot passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Wende was a 1980 graduate of Duval High School and a 1983 graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marshall University and worked as a registered nurse at CAMC Memorial for nearly 40 years. She loved to visit Clearwater Beach, being outdoors, and kayaking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Jones and parents, Linda Mannon and Dayton Gillenwater.

Wende is survived by her daughters, Kaitlyn (Jacob) Rhodes and Briann (Timothy) Steele; grandchildren, Waylon Rhodes and Alorianna Steele; sisters, Barbarah (Richard) McElhaney and Melinda (Tom) Zirkle; brother, Charles Gillenwater; and many friends.

Theodore Douglas Tackett

Theodore Douglas Tackett, 71, of St. Albans, passed away Monday, February 20, 2023, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, after a short illness. He was born July 31, 1951 in South Charleston, West Virginia, the son of Theodore E. and Clara C. (Harless) Tackett. He graduated from Greene County (Ohio) Career Center in 1972 where he studied tool and machine design. But after a few years in that trade he went into the trucking business for himself, and for the past several years had primarily ran his own trucking company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore E. and Clara C. (Harless) Tackett, his sister, Betty Jean (Tackett) and her husband, Cloyd Combs, and his brother, Donald Lloyd and his wife, Marjorie (Voles) Tackett, and a close friend, Miss Diana Lynn Baldwin.

Douglas is survived by his two sisters, Juanita Carol (Tackett) Smith (Clarence Robert) of Scott Depot, WV and Brenda Joy (Tackett) White (Clifford Eugene) of Xenia, OH; Brittany Kay Wood (Wesley) of Hurricane, WV, who he loved as if she was his own daughter and her children, Christopher, Ryan, Tyler, and Justin.

Shirley June Bell

Shirley June Bell, 86, of Taylorsville, Ky, formerly of Yawkey, WV, passed away Friday, February 17, 2023, at Signature Health Care, in Taylorsville, KY.

Shirley retired as a secretary from C & P Telephone. She was a former member of Porter Fork Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lester Bell; parents, Luther and Edith Angus McClure.

Shirley is survived by her son Mark (Vicki) Bell; grandchildren, Meghan (Chris) Neil, Meredith Bell, Brendan (Annie) Bell, & Joshua Bell; great grandchildren, Kellen Neil & Marilyn Bell; sister, Ramona Cummings; brother, Andy (Becky) McClure; and lifelong friend, that was like a sister to her, Lillian Snodgrass.

Michael Daniel Graley

Michael Daniel Graley, 71, of Ashford, WV, born August 23, 1951, in Charleston, WV, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at home.

Michael fought and lost the battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Winifred “Matt” and Juanita Faye Price Graley, sister, Nanette Maynard and brother James “Timmy” Graley.

He was a former employee of Coal River Energy, and one of the best coal miners and electricians and attended Emmons Freewill Baptist Church. He was always ready to do anything for anyone and always went the extra step.

Left behind: sisters, Jacqueline “Jackie” (Roger) Ross of Seth, Kathy Garretson of Emmons, and former wife and caregiver, Geneva Robinson of Ashford. He is also survived by his children, Michael “Mike” Graley of Ashford, Mary Green of Ashford, and Jenna Jarrett of Ashford, granddaughters, Hannah Atkinson of Ohio, Mykayla (Bobby ) Kirk of Sylvester, grandson, Levi Huggins of Ashford, great-grandchildren, Caroline, Russell, best buddy Triton, and Khaleesia. And many nephews and nieces and special friend, Jenkie Estep.

Jesse Alden Thompson

Jesse Alden Thompson, 67, of Ashford, WV, passed away February 14, 2023, after a brave, hard-fought battle with cancer.

Jesse was born June 21, 1955, to Jack and Dolores Thompson of Marmet, WV. A proud UMWA member and journeyman electrician, Jesse retired from Arch Coal after 25 years in coal mining. He also recently retired from a second career at Chemours in 2022.

Jesse enjoyed the outdoors and hunting, but he was most in love with his family. He is survived by his wife, Eva; his daughters, Brigitte (Luke) Carney, Kelly (Kristofer) Thompson, and Jessica (Jerry) Hill; his grandchildren, Abigail, Brooke, Levi, and Preston; his brother, Ronnie (Carol) Thompson; and his sister, Gilda Thompson.

The family would like to thank the staff at CAMC Cancer Center for their compassionate care.

A memorial service will be officiated by Jesse’s dear friend Richard Harold at noon Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Rumble Community Baptist Church in Ashford where Jesse attended. Friends and family may visit one hour prior.
