Romie J. Griffith

Romie J. Griffith, 90, of South Charleston, WV. “Knowing the way home, at Rest in the Promise”. Romie was born at Ivy Branch, WV, July 23, 1928 and passed from this life Thursday, May 30, 2019.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in St. Albans. He operated St. Albans Exxon and the St. Albans Service Company, retiring in 1982 after many years of very satisfying work. Romie was a Merchant Seaman and Veteran of the Army Signal Corps serving in Europe.

Romie was predeceased by parents, Romie E. and Elsie Mooney Griffith; brothers, Bill, Charles and Frank Griffith; and sisters, Betty Jo Griffith, Sarah Harless, Mary Wagner and Ruth Stover LaBlanc.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Barbara; son, Dr. Tom (Betty) Griffith; daughter, Lu Ann (Michael) Brown; sister, Minnie Palmer; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2019, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Joel Harpold officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park in Alum Creek, with military graveside Rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Orville Lee Byrd

Orville Lee Byrd, 71, of Yawkey, WV, went home Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his parents Louise  Roberts Byrd and Arnold Byrd.

He was a former employee of Kanawha Block and Peerless Block, and was a Courtesy Patrol for the State of WV patrolling Corridor G from Danville to Charleston.

Orville served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his brother, Orvie Ray Byrd (Ann) of Mason, WV; nieces and nephews, Sarah, Eric, and Nicole; and great nieces and nephews, Hailey, Whitney and Kelson. He is also survived by Aunts and Uncles; Rose (Forrest) Johnston, Harley (Carletha) Roberts, Harry (Phyllis) Roberts, Julia Roberts, Robert (Nora) Roberts, Rebecca (Walter) Cook, and Arthur (Mary) Roberts, Maggie Abbott, Lula Belle Hayes, Mable Waits and Buster (Norma). Service will be held Saturday June 15, 2019 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating at Sumerco Church of God.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens with Military Rites.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations toward funeral expenses.

Joe “Carlos” Smith

Joe “Carlos” Smith, 84, of Charleston passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

Carlos was a construction worker all of his life and retired from Bilco Construction Company.   He was a generous, kind, but tough man who loved his family.

Carlos was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Belva Smith; brothers Arnold, Jimmy and Zack; sisters Shirley Rader and Doris Saunders.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife “Dovie” of over 64 years; sons Mike (Susan) Smith, Jeff (Donna) Smith and Kevin Smith (Betsy); his grandchildren Samantha (Joey) Carney, Shannon Clark (Jody), Crystal and Drake; great-grandchildren Derek, Kaylee, Landon, Ella, Bryson, Ashlee and Tara; sisters Arbutus Parsons, June (Joe) Funderburk, Judy (William) Kent, Brenda (Gary) George and brother Gregory Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek.   Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

A private burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco, WV.

The family wants to thank the Hubbard Hospice House staff for their care.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV  25387-2536.

 

Donald Nelson “Coco” Dunlap, 66, of Sumerco, WV, was born May 30, 1952, and went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 27, 2019.

Coco was a 1970 graduate of Duval High School.  He was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, digging ramps, hunting molly moochers and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his father Donald Ray Dunlap, his sister, Kimberly Dunlap.

He is survived by his mother, Betty Dunlap of McCorkle; sons, Donny (Melody) Dunlap of Alkol and Chris Dunlap of Teays Valley; grandchildren, Payton (Reece), Lakynn, Brayden, and Braxton; great grandchildren Rowan, Berkley and Delaney; brothers, David Dunlap of Ridgeview, Meddie (Patty) of Alum Creek, and Russell Dunlap of McCorkle; sisters, Charlene (Jacky) of McCorkle and Peggy (Jerry) Marker of McCorkle.

Graveside service and burial will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2019, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco, WV, with Pastor Butch Brogan officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the funeral home for services.

Evelyn W. Lowther

Evelyn W. Lowther, 91, born on August 2, 1927 in Reedy, WV, and went home to the Lord Thursday, May 23, 2019 at CAMC Memorial Division in Charleston.

Evelyn grew up in Jackson County graduating from Ripley High School in 1945.  She was married to Roy G. Lowther on October 18, 1947 and moved to St. Albans in 1953.  Evelyn was a loyal member of Highlawn Baptist Church since 1961 and a volunteer at Thomas Memorial Hospital for 38 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Emma Camp Cline and brother, Howard C. Cline, Jr.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 71 years, Roy; daughter, Sandra G. Lowther Clancy and her husband Charles A. Clancy; and granddaughter, Caitlin Emma Clancy.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave., St. Albans, with Pastor Jason Robbins officiating.  Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans.

The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the church.

 

Chester E. Adams

Chester E. Adams, 87, of  Julian, WV, went home Saturday, May 18, 2019, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Danville.

He was a member of the UMWA and a U. S. Air Force Veteran.

Chester was a gardener of vegetables and flowers, he loved growing things like Indian Corn, peanuts and popcorn; he also loved birdwatching and feeding the birds.  He  enjoyed woodworking and making furniture.

Chester was preceded in death by his wife Dorcas, daughter Patricia McCallister, parents John Calvin and Mattie Powell Adams, and siblings Marshall, J.C. and Bob Adams, Noke Lynn, and Anna Lou Wade.

He is survived by his son, Greg Adams (Carol Gee); and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Johnna Pauley for all her chauffeuring and loving care of Dad, the staff at Hillcrest Health Care Center and Boone Memorial Hospital.

Terry Leonard Sigmon

Terry Leonard Sigmon, 64, of Alum Creek, WV,  went home Thursday, May 16, 2019.

He served in the U. S. Army.

Terry  was preceded in death by his father, Charles Sigmon and brother, Junior Sigmon.

He is survived by his mother, Laura Sigmon; daughters, Davena Jo Hughes and Elizabeth Yolanda Rucker; 3 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; and sisters, Debbie Sigmon and Bonnie (David) Williams.

A private service will be held.   Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial  Park in Alum Creek.

Betty L. “Boo” Clark, 88, of Alkol, WV, went home to the Lord Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston.

She was a homemaker and a faithful member of Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Alkol. “Boo” loved caring for her community and gardening.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Clark; grandson, Justin R. Clark; and daughter-in-law Linda Stevens Clark.

She is survived by sons David (Robbie) Clark and Tom Clark (fiancee` Trish Spaulding); grandson, Corey (Dawn) Clark; granddaughter, Kristin Clark (fiancee` Travis Halstead); Corey’s son, Ian and family and Corey”s stepdaughter McKenley; sister, Anna Gae Chandler; brother, Dallas Dean (Linda) Egnor; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2019, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Darrell Searls and Dwight MClure officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank two very special and loving caregivers who became a part of our family, Betty Loftis and Melissa Sigmon, for the wonderful care they provided for Mother. Also, a special thank you to the staff at Hubbard Hospice House West for their loving compassionate care of our mother.

Randall Scott Kirk

Randall Scott “Randy” Kirk, 52, of South Charleston, went home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, May 15, 2019.  Randy is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wendy, and his parents Francis Leon & Lois (Zastrow) Kirk.

He is survived by his children, Cortney Kirk, Randy (Cindy) Kirk, Doug Bowen, and Brandon (Lenora) Bowen, grandchildren, Candace Estep, Liam Kirk, Kendall Kirk, Carolyn Kirk, Lindsay Bowen, Brandon Martin, Tearanee Bowen, Paige and Destiny Nelson, and Chase Bowen, brother, Dennis “Skip” (Jeannie) Kirk.  And a large extended family including sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Randy was a graduate of Truman High School, Taylor, MI.  After graduation he joined the US Air Force and served our country.  After his time in the Service, he had several careers, most notably with National Gypsum, National City, MI, and RAOCAT Rubber, South Charleston, WV.

Memorial Service will be 2:00pm Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist with Pastor Frank Chapman and Pastor Daniel Dent officiating.

Tammy Cobb Skeens

Tammy Cobb Skeens, 48, of Hernshaw, WV, passed away Friday, May 10, 2019 at home.

She was a graduate of Duval High School Class of 1989, a woman of strong faith and she loved to play the piano and sing.  Tammy was full of life and always put others before herself.

Tammy was preceded in death by her father, Freddie Cobb.

She is survived by her mother, Vickie Cobb, of Alum Creek, daughters, Julie Ward and Mariah Ward of Alum Creek, brother, Dale (Michele) Cobb of Spring TX, niece and nephew, Chloe, Caleb, and husband, Steve Skeens.
