Joshua Brian Hall, 34, of Branchland passed away Thursday, July 21, 2022, at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mary Faye Hall.

Joshua is survived by siblings, David, Charlie, Isaac, Stephen, Michael, and Donna, and several nieces and nephews.

There are no services scheduled at this time.

Betty June Miles

Betty June Miles, 92, of Griffithsville, WV, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carter, and parents Early & Sadie Peters.

Betty attended Keith Freewill Baptist Church and Sand Fork Baptist Church. She also worked for Osborne’s Store.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Kay Spurlock and son Carter “Skip” (Libby) Miles, grandchildren, Brent Michael (Tina) Miles, Ladonna (Kevin) Bonnett, Tonya (Bob) Townley, and Karrie (Raymond) Ramos. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Ryan and Jaiden Page Miles, Brook (Allicia) Bonnett, Baylee, Bryanna, Brevin and Braden Bonnett, Tessa Townley, Tala Townley, Toriana Townley, Soraya and Sabrina Ramos, and great-great-grandchildren, Amelia Jean Miles, Carter and Dillion Bonnett.

Service will be 1:00pm Thursday, July 28, 2022 at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Terry Sponaugle officiating. Burial will follow at Sand Fork Cemetery. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

A very special thank you to Dignity Hospice caregivers, Amelia, Lindsay, Elizabeth, Teddy and Billie.

Harold Raymond “Junior” Barker, 65, of Ridgeview passed away Monday, July 18, 2022, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Junior was a retired coal miner from Kanawha Eagle Coal and was a former employee of Peabody Coal. He loved the outdoors, especially coon hunting and being outside with his dogs and chickens, 4-wheeler riding, gardening, fishing and spending time with his kids and grandkids.

Junior was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mary Smith Barker and his sister, Sandy Ball, son, Baby Barker, grandson, Layken Barker, and nephew Tyler Ball.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Linda; daughters, Misty Dawn Foster & Chloey Barker; son, Chase Barker; grandson, Christian Paul Angel; granddaughter, Piper Everly Dawn Barker; sister, Lorrie Ann Campbell (Christopher); brothers, Ronnie (Martha) Barker & Doug Barker; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Ashford Church of God with Pastor Randell Kinder officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery, Ashford.

Sarah Faye Chandler

Sarah Faye Chandler, 42, of Alum Creek, WV, passed away Monday, July 18, 2022 at Logan Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Bowen and twin brothers, Jason and Jeremy Chandler.

She was a homemaker and loved crafting and painting. She loved her children and grandchildren very much.

Sarah is survived by her daughters, Brittney Keeten, Brooke Keeten, third daughter, and daughter Briah Chandler, and son, Bryson Burkert. She is also survived by her father, Jimmie Chandler, and grandchildren, Gracelynn McCormick, Alice McCormick, Selena Burgess, J.J. Burgess, and Julian Martin, and sisters, Kelly Chandler and Erin Spradlin.

In keeping with Sarah’s wishes, she will be cremated. Private services will be held at a later date.

John S. “Jay” Johnson, Jr., 53, and affectionately known as Jaybird, left “Almost Heaven” on Sunday, July 17, 2022, and went to his Heavenly Home.

Jay was born on August 2, 1968. He was preceded in death by his four grandparents, John & Marjorie Johnson, Virginia (Ferguson) & Clyde Williams.

He is survived by his loving and devoted parents, John and Dinah Johnson, sisters, Vicki Johnson and Kelly Tinsley and brother-in-law Mike Tinsley, all of Hurricane, WV, and his nephew, Mitchell Tinsley of Ft. Myers, FL.

Jay grew up in St. Albans. He loved music, WVU sports and his years spent at St. Albans High School, where he was the manager for the St. Albans baseball team under Coach Carter for three years. He cherished his relationship with Coach Carter and his time spent with the team. Jay was a sweet soul who loved his family. His favorite things were attending WVU football games with his dad, and/or staying home to watch the game and planning ahead with his mom the menu of good food to eat while watching the game! Jay loved a celebration, and would start making plans for his August Birthday Party in December as soon as Christmas was over!

Jay attended Highlawn Baptist Church all of his life while his health would allow, and when he could no longer go he would tell his Dad to ‘tell his church he said, Hi”. Jay was an inspiration to so many, because although he had so many health obstacles his entire life, he never complained, he never stopped loving everyone he knew fiercely and he never stopped finding the joy in life. His family was blessed to have him for 53 years, and the lessons he taught us and the love he gave will live in our hearts forever.

A Celebration of Jay’s life will be held 3:00pm at Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, WV, on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, with Pastor Jason Robbins officiating. Friends will be welcomed from 1:30 to 3:00pm. Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park.

In honor of Jay’s love of the West Virginia Mountaineers, we will all be wearing WVU attire, and if you can, we hope you will too! Donations in Jay’s memory may be made to ‘his church”, Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave., St. Albans, WV 25177.

Hansford Ivan McCallister, 78, of Montgomery, WV, formerly of Nellis, WV, went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Montgomery General Hospital Extended Care. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, parents, Clay & Pearl Gillispie McCallister, and brothers, Leonard and Davy McCallister.

He was a retired Master VW Mechanic for Rollyson and Joe Holland, and a member of Morning Star Baptist Church at Ridgeview.

He is survived by his daughter, Janie (Steve) Belcher, son, Jason McCallister, sisters, Gardenia (Lyle) Snodgrass and Velda Wriston, and brothers, Cisco (Cathy) McCallister and Ray (Patty) McCallister. He is also survived by three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00pm Thursday, July 14, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, with Pastor Randell Kinder officiating. Burial will follow at the Kinder Cemetery, Costa/Brushton, WV. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

James “Jimmy” Estep, 89, of Ruth, WV, went to his heavenly home Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Stonerise in Charleston, WV after a short illness.

Jimmy was a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church in Ruth, WV, which he loved. He read his Bible everyday and was in constant prayer.

He was retired from Union Carbide where he worked as a Pipefitter for 25 years.

He was a U. S. Army Veteran serving during the Korean War, and a member of the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

Jimmy was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis Lawson Estep; parents, Phillip and Allie Holstein Estep; and brothers, Charles Edward “Butch” and Robert Lee Estep.

He is survived by son & daughter-in-law, Allan and Tammy Estep of TN. Tammy lovingly called him “Jim-Bob”.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Sunday, July 10, 2022 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Gary Gillispie officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Family and friends may gather one hour prior to the service.

Wilma Jean Harless

Wilma Jean Harless, 73, of Julian, WV, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at CAMC- Memorial Division. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ewell & Mary Roberts Harless, half-brother, Marlon Harless and Dalton Harless.

Wilma was a wonderful homemaker, mother, and grandmother, and great grandmother going above and beyond to care for her family. Her favorite hobby and past time included playing bingo, spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren, and caring for the elderly.

She is survived by her five children, Charles of Yawkey, WV, Mary Ann Harless (Andrew Hager) of Parkersburg, WV, Eric Dean Harless of Gaston, SC, Kenny Ray and Missy Dawn Harless of Camp Creek, WV, and Rita Marie Harless of Camp Creek, siblings, Deloris Jones, Eliza Johnson, Levi Harless, and Katrina Scott, half-sisters, Rushia and Erna. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Steven, Joshua, Jeanann, Whitney, Dallas and Kenny, great-grandchildren, Landon, Colton, Carlee, Mason, Emmitt, Reagan, Payton, Shane, Rose and Dalton, and a host of other family and friends.

Graveside service will be 12:00 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2022, at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Hurricane, with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest donations be made to assist in offsetting the funeral costs. Checks may be payable to Curry Funeral Home.

William Sherman Holestine, Jr., 85, of Emmons, passed away Monday, July 4, 2022, at Genesis Dunbar Center, Dunbar.

William was an accomplished bluegrass musician and passed his love of bluegrass on to many. In an article titled William “Junior” Holestine, Old Jake Gilly written by Gerald Milnes, Milnes says, “I met Junior Holestine in 2003 on the grounds of the state capital during the Vandalia Gathering…I asked him if he’d play me a tune, and he said he would if we went around the building to an out of the way place. He seemed shy and wasn’t sure he wanted many people to hear him. Junior uncased his fiddle, tightened up his bow, and lit into an old-time tune. I immediately knew I was hearing a special talent.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman & Bertha Holstein; sister and brother-in-law, Ozean (Jerry) Barker; brothers, Alton & Mike Holstein.

William is survived by brother, John (Lou) Holstein; sisters, Arlene Larck, Linda K. Hunt, Sharon (Jerry) Wentz, Frances (Al) Matheny, Marilyn (David) Gillispie, Connie Sprague; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at a later date.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Kristen Pauley for her wonderful care given to William and also, thanks to Gary Jordan, Jr. for everything he did for Junior.

John L. Myers

John L. Myers, 73, of Alum Creek passed away Sunday, July 3, 2022, at home.

John was born on February 24, 1949, to the late John L. Myers IV and June Priestley Myers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Clarence (Moon) Myers.

John is survived by his son, John L. Myers, VI (Nikki) and grandchildren, Gabriel and Logan Myers of Chesapeake; son, Mark Anthony Myers of Alum Creek; and brother, Rodney (Jingle) Myers.

John served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and worked as a Lineman after serving in the military.

Johnny loved his family and friends. He loved to fish, hunt, shoot pool, sit around the fire pit and talk about old times.

Due to John’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. He asked to be cremated and buried by his late father, John Myers.

The family would like to thank Melody (Moe) Pourfarhadi, Carla (Jeff) Finch, Greg (Judy) Graley, and Jeff (Charlene) Ray for the care and love they gave Johnny especially in his last days.

We want to thank Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek for taking great care to accommodate Johnny’s wishes.
