Frederick Bruce Carney, 82, of Charleston, passed on in the night during the early hours of June 23, 2003, after a long illness.
For years self-employed as the sole proprietor and employee of Carney’s TV Service, Fred had started into the television and electronics service and repair business during the pioneering days of television.
In January 1941, at age 20, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Naval Service and shipped out at Oxnard, California. He was stationed in Oahu after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific Theatre as a Navy Radioman in Tinian and Saipan during WWII.
Following the war, he attended technical school for television in Louisville, KY and worked in Chicago for a short duration. Eventually returning to West Virginia, he opened a television sales and service shop, Teletronics, on F Street in South Charleston, in 1953. He later went to work for General Electric, but within a short time he went back into business for himself, where he spent the remainder of his working years.
Fred was the son of the late Okey Bruce and Elma Griffith Carney of Yawkey. Okey was the owner of W. Va. Department Store and W. Va. Shoe Repair Co. in Charleston until the time of his death in 1958. Fred was also preceded in death by three sisters who died at a very young age and a brother, Kelley, who died at age 8.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Peggy Edens Carney; his son, Bruce Carney of Charleston; his daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Rod Myers of South Charleston; Cynthia and Daniel Miller of New Smyrna Beach, FL; Joyce and Alan Abbott of Charleston; his sister, Jerry Shaw of New Smyrna Beach, FL; and one aunt, Emma Stephens of Olney, IL. He is also survived by six grandchildren. Samuel Myers; Angela Milam; and Michael, Matthew, Katie, and James Miller; and by three great grandchildren: Michael Milam, Caleb Haynes, and Luke Myers.
Born October 28, 1920, Fred would have turned 83 this year.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 PM on Thursday, July 3, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.
