Evelyn M. Oxley, 61 of South Charleston died Saturday, August 31, 2002 at home after a long illness.

She was an employee of Putnam Aging in Winfield and was a member of the Mountain Top Assembly in South Charleston.

Surviving are her husband, Geary E. Oxley; three sons, Gregory of South Charleston, Bradford of Pinch, Geary G. of South Charleston; one daughter, Gail Salmons of South Charleston, one brother, Raymond Mann of South Charleston; nine grandchildren, Ashley, Kayla, Cody, Jessica, Logan, Nicholas, Adrianna, Grant and Kristen;
Graveside services will be Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Graceland Memorial Park, South Chazleston with Pastors David and Jean Chrest officiating. There will be a visitation for the family at the Oxley residence on Monday evening. Curry Funeral Home at Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.

Guy C. Green, 76, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania died Friday, August 30, 2002 at Greensburg, Pennsylvania after a long illness.

He was a Navy Veteran of WWII and an Army Veteran of the Korean war.

He is survived by his three sons, Calvin Jones of Greensburg, Kevin and Dale Green both of Canton, Ohio; three daughters, Jennifer Painter of Delmont, Pennsylvania; Amy Rose of Columbus, Ohio; Valerie Cassidy of Ravenna, Ohio; three sisters, Anna Virginia Hughart of Orlando, Florida; Eloise Brumfield of Massillon, Ohio; Ahna Harley of Clendenin, two brothers, Danner Green of Alum Creek, Sherrill Green of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00 AM Monday at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Rev Ryan Seabolt officiating. Burial will be in the Pauley Cemetery at Garretts Bend, with military graveside rites conducted by the Benny Padilla Post 4768. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. C.

Helen Parsons Newman

Helen Parsons Newman, 81, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 26, 2002 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston after a long illness.
She was a homemaker, a member of Olcott Church of God, and a lifelong resident of Kanawha county.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Newman.

She is survived by her: 2 Sons: Alfred Newman of South Charleston; William Everett Newman, Jr. of Las Cruces, NM; 1 Brother: John Parsons of St. Albans;
6 Grandchildren; 9 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Wednesday, August 28, 2002 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Lang McCallister and James McCallister officiating. Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek. Friends may call on Tuesday, August 27, 2002 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.

Charles L. Bragg

Charles L. Bragg, 51 of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania, formerly of Sod, West Virginia, died Saturday, August 24, 2002 at his sister’s residence in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
He worked as a truck mechanic for the former Keystone Mack Company in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania for 16 years. Born in Charleston, West Virginia on January 25, 1951, he was a son of the late Frank A. and Violet V. (McClure) Bragg.

He is survived by his: 1 Son: Scott C. Bragg of Bridgeport, PA; 2 Brother: Lenny Bragg of King of Prussia, PA; Darrell Bragg of Pottstown, PA; 4 Sisters: Sue Hoser of Jeffersonville, PA; Laverne Nicholas of Sod, WV; Alice Berstler of W. Chester, PA; Mareda Reynolds of Nitro, WV; 3 Nephews and 5 Nieces.

There was a funeral service held on Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at 8 PM in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. There will be a graveside service in Lively Cemetery, Sod, West Virginia on Thursday, August 29, 2002 at 10:00 AM. Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, in care of arrangements.

Hayward B. Hill

Hayward B. Hill, 86 of South Charleston, died Saturday, August 24, 2002 at home after a long illness.

He was a member of the Hilltop Baptist Church, South Charleston, was retired from Union Carbide with 27 1/2 years of service. He was an independent real estate broker, farmer, a former director of Southern States Co-operative in Richmond, had 24 years of service on the Kanawha County Planning Commission, was a member for eight years on the Private Industry Counsel of Kanawha, was a Republican candidate for the Kanawha County Sheriff in 1972 and was known as the Man in the White Hat. He received the Outstanding Farmer Award several times from the Capitol Soil Conservation District, was owner-operator of Hillhauen Farm since 1951 and was a Navy Veteran of WWII.

He is survived by his: Wife: Ethel; Brother: A. B. Hill of South Charleston.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Monday, August 26, 2002 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be in the Nelson-Hill Cemetery, South Charleston. Friends may call from 4 to 6 PM Sunday, August 25, 2002 at the funeral home.

She was a homemaker and a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church at Garretts Bend.

She is survived by her: 2 Sons: Charles Mosteller of Prince George, VA; Tony Mosteller of Alum Creek; 1 Daughter: Debbie Wheeler of Griffithsville; 1 Sister: Inez Bird of Hurricane; 1 Brother: Hubert Sloan of Hurricane; 5 Grandchildren: Tracy Mosteller, Kimberly Wheeler, Kenny, Thomas and Brian Mosteller; 2 Step Grandchildren: Melinda Ashley and Alicia Thompson.

Services will be 2:00 PM on Monday, August 19, 2002 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.

James Kyle Childress, Jr., 73, of Alum Creek, died Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at home after a long illness.

He was a retired excavator. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Johnson Childress.

He is survived by his four daughters, Dorothy Childress, Donna Childress, and Darlena Clark and husband, Jimmy, all of Alum Creek and Debra Wymer and husband, Dennis, of Nitro; one sister, Nancy Childress of Alum Creek, three grandchidren, Ashley Lewis and husband, Russell, Michael Wymer and Tiffany Wymer; two great grandchildren, Morgan Lewis and Matthew Lewis.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, August 8, 2002 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call on Wednesday, August 7, 2002 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Cecil Sheldon Roberts, 85, of Alkol, WV died August 4, 2002, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born on January 22,1917 at Garretts Bend, WV. He was the son of the late Calvin Roberts and Birdie Ann (Wheeler) Roberts. He was preceded in death by his wife, Junetta and his son, Teddy Roberts.

He is survived by his two sons, Calvin and Sheldon, both of Alkol and his eight daughters, Lavon Clark of Alkol, Violet Lovejoy of Elloree, SC, Roberta Selby of Littlestown, PA, Leoda Criss of Jarrettsville, MD, Awanda Knopp of Jarrettsville, MD, Bazbaza Preston of Phoenix, MD, Shirley Foster of Hampstead, MD, and Joetta Nelson of Hampstead, MD. He has 21 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He also has one sister, Macil Weeks of Ridgeview, W V and a half brother, Bill Roberts of Atwater, CA.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV on Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at 11:00 AM with (Dr.) Pastor Garry Bowman officiating. Final resting place will be Roberts Cemetery, Brushy Fork, Alkol, W V. The pallbearers will be Scott Clark, Timmy Criss, John, Jamie, Jimmy, and Barry Roberts.
