Denna Ann Adkins, 68, of Alkol passed away at home Monday February 27, 2012.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Lorraine Vickers, husband Bernie, brothers Roger, Dwayne and Ronald.

She is survived by her son, Timmy (Vanessa) Kinchen of Drawdy, daughter Jessica Adkins at home, sisters Yvonne Dotson of Alkol, Linda Lambert of Quinland, brothers Lawrence and Victor Vickers of Alkol, 3 grandson, 5 great grandchildren, 5 nephews, 6 nieces and many love ones.

Service will be 2:00 PM Thursday March 1, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Burial will follow at Stone Cemetery Alkol. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mary Virginia (Ginny) Gillenwater 84, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Sunday February 26, 2012 at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents Teller and Irene Marcum, husband Denver, son Howard Lynn, brothers Samuel, Teller Jr, David and Henry and sisters May and Louise.

Ginny was a homemaker, a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her, she also was a member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church at Alum Creek.

Ginny is survived by her son William “Bill” (Cleta) Gillenwater of Griffithsville, grandson Evan James Gillenwater, granddaughter Michelle Lynn Gillenwater, sisters Gracie Jenkins of Charleston, Margarette Cipan of East Lake, Ohio, brothers, Joseph and James Marcum both of Dunlow, sister-in-law Pearl Marcum of Ravenna, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday February 29 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Gale Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens Yawkey. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jack Pauley

Jack I. Pauley, 79, of Alkol went to be with his Lord and to be reunited with the love of his life Betty Friday, February, 24, 2012 at home after a long illness. .

He was a member of the Bear Branch Church of Christ where he was a faithful servant. Jack had a wonderful sense of humor and always thought of others before himself. He was a former employee of Rose Shopping Center at Alum Creek and a veteran of the Korean Army.

He is survived by his two sons, Melvin (Bonnie) Pauley, Michael (Debbie) Pauley of Alkol; brother, Nimrod (Joann) Pauley of Virginia; grandchildren Shandi Pauley – Glenn (Luke) of Sumerco, Emily Humphreys (Adam) of Clendenin, Wesley Pauley (Nikki Holbrook) of Charleston, Kasey Roberts of Griffithsville, John Walls (Heather) of Sod, Nicole Davis (Clarence Fields) of St. Albans, Niki Adkins- Baldwin (Rodney) of Woodville, Kari Wood (Matt) of Woodville, Sherri Adkins-Lovejoy (Tony) of Spurlockville; great grandchildren, Hadin, Heath, Elias, Jeremiah, Hunter, Reagan, Daniel, Drake, Ashton, Brode, Jacob, Xavier, Jacob, Justin, Riley Jo, Chloe, Kelci and another great grandson due in July.

The funeral service will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Ministers Ronnie Linville and Brian Barrett officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey with military Graveside Rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. Family and friends will gather Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.

Cecil Turley

Cecil Turley, 105, of Sod died Monday, February 25, 2008 at Boone Memorial Hospital after a long illness. 

He was retired from the coal mines and from C & O Railroad.   He was a member of UMWA. 

He is survived by:

Step-daughter: Reva Caldwell

11 Grandchildren

14 great grandchildren

Several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 pm Friday, February 29, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Roe Smith officiating.  Burial will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park.  Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

George Lawrence Wolfe, Sr, 83 of Nellis went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 with his family and cat Molly by his side.  To his family and friends, George was known as “Blackeye”.  Blackeye was a Christian.

Blackeye served in the US Army from February 1951 to February 1953 and was a member of the 1353 Laborers International Union of North America.

Blackeye was the son of the late Herbert and Mary Wolfe of Costa.

Blackeye was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Wanda Lucille Wolfe in 2008, his eldest son George Lawrence Wolfe, Jr., in 2010. Eight brothers and sisters, Charles Wolfe, Donald Wolfe, Judith Conley, Sadie Zirkle, Edith Hutton, Edna Zirkle, Eleanor “Jimmy” Graley, and Rose Proctor.

Blackeye is survived by his sister, Maggie Graley of Alum Creek, five children, Sue Mooney (Randy) of Peytona, Roger Wolfe (Tanya) of Nellis, Debi Kinder (Randell) of Ashford, Angie Wolfe of Peytona and Patricia Jordan (fianc’e Tony Addison) of Prince, Daughter in law Libby Wolfe and his special friend of the family Teresa Jarrell.

Surviving grandchildren are Christy Thomas of Peytona, Sherri Armstrong (David) of Ashford, Tabitha Parcell (Britt) of Lewisburg, Stacy Hall (Mike) of Nellis, Rachel Hager (Timmy) of Nellis, Roger Wolfe (Kimmie) of Conway SC, Josaiah Kinder of Charleston, Bethany and Tessa Kinder of Ashford.

Blackeye had nine great grandchildren who loved him dearly. McKenzie and Matthew Thomas, Sydney Perdue, Ethan Barker and Rileigh Reed, Elyssa and TJ Hager, and Anika and Taryn Wolfe.

Blackeye enjoyed going to his camp in Pocahontas County and working in his garden. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was loved by all.

Pallbearers: Matt Thomas, David Armstrong, Britt Parcell, Mike Hall, Timmy Hager and Josaiah Kinder.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home; 2097 Childress Rd Alum Creek with Pastors Randell Kinder and Danny Kinder Sr. officiating. Final resting place will be at Barker Cemetery in Ashford with military rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. Friends and family may gather Friday, February 24, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Ashton Care Center, Dr. Triplett, the ICU and PCU staff at St. Francis Hospital, and Hospice Care for taking great care of Dad.

Linda Sue Dunlap

Linda Sue Dunlap 67, of Alum Creek passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2012 , just in time for morning service in heaven. She died at home after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dillard Mark and Blanche Mortana Griffith McCormick, her life-long love Jerry Lee Dunlap and nephew (or third son) Daniel “Meathead” McCormick.

She was a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ and a 1962 graduate of Duval High School. Linda was employed by the Diamond Department Store, Lincoln County Opportunity Council, and Kroger. She retired from Kroger in 1990. She also owned and operated a family restaurant, grocery store, and ceramic shop with her husband, Jerry. Linda and Jerry were best known for their open home to relatives or anyone else who needed a place to rest his or her head. Their Saturday night pizza parties were a community favorite in the Alum Creek area for children and adults. Her artistic talents were often displayed through her paintings and ceramic creations. Even though the last fourteen years of her life were filled with loss and illness, her grandchildren were always her inspiration. This was evident when she turned her home into “Granny’s Playhouse” filled with boats, pool tables, construction areas, movies, and their own art center. She will be best remembered for her generous nature, love for family, and sweet spirit.

She is survived by her two sons, Jay (Sonya) of Sod, Chris (Sarah) of Alum Creek, grandchildren, Weston and Gavin of Sod, Dylan and Mackenzie of Alum Creek, two brothers David McCormick of Sod and Michael(Diane) McCormick of Crystal River, Florida.

Service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Minister Joseph Watts officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery Sod. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Helen Roberts

Helen L. Roberts, 82, of Sumerco went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 5, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruford and Freda Means; husbands Walter Mooney and Russell Roberts; and five brothers and sisters.

Helen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to garden, travel and spend time with her entire family and friends. She will be sadly missed by many who loved her.

She is survived by her three daughters: Kathy (Jeff) Crowe, Beverly (Steve) Adkins, Judy (Bill) Word; four step-daughters: Margie Harmon, Joan (Gail) Runyon, Kay (Fred) Pauley and Anita Roberts; sister, Doris Jean (Granville) Coleman; sister-in-law, Roberta Means; ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, five step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev. Linda Withrow officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

David W. Hatch

David W. Hatch, 77, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Friday, February 3, 2012 at home after a long illness.

He was the son of the late Jack and Evelyn Hatch (Curry), and preceded in death by brothers, Wayne Florence and Jack Hatch.

David was a 1954 graduate of Charleston High School. He served in the US Air Force from 1956-1960 and retired from the United States Postal Service with 36 years of service. He was a faithful member and trustee of Independent Missionary Baptist Church of Alum Creek.

Those surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ilene Hatch; daughter, Renee (Eric) Smith of Tornado; and grandchildren, Shantel, Dakota, Kiana and Taegan.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday at Independent Missionary Baptist Church of Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, with military graveside rites conducted by the Benny Padilla Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday from 4:30 – 6:30 pm at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.
