Ruth Illene Elswick Dunlap, 94, of Mesa, AZ, went home to meet the Lord on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Crismon Peaks Assisted Living. She was born May 19, 1927, and raised in Mt. Hope, WV.

Ruth shared her smile and faith generously.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell, and her daughter, Melissa.

Ruth is survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack & JoAnn Dunlap, sister-in-law, Peggy Ruff and niece and caregivers, Ginny & Alex Rouch. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest by her husband at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV.

Julia Ann Stephens

Julia Ann Stephens, 67, of Charleston passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022, at home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Gracie Stephens.

Julia is survived by her daughters, Melissa Basham and Danielle Basham; grandchildren, Randon Varnadoe, Julia King, Sarah Blake, Isabella Hudson; great grandchildren, Paisley Mae and Frankie Ray.

It was Julia’s wish to be cremated and there are no services scheduled at this time.

Duane Rex Lewis

Duane Rex Lewis, 62, of Hurricane went to be with our Lord and Savior Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Duane was the owner/operator of Lewis Precision Drywalling and loved motocross racing.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rebecca Duffy and Maxine Davis.

He is survived by his sons, Jacob and Shane Lewis; niece, Contessa Davis of Hurricane; and sister, Sherri Lewis Lunsford of North Carolina.

There are no services scheduled at this time.

In lieu of flowers, donations towards the funeral cost may be made to Curry Funeral Home, PO Box 9 Alum Creek, WV 25003.

Regina Audrey “Gina” Pauley, 54, of Sumerco, WV, a Christian, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at CAMC – Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Gloria Dodd and sisters, Terra Kendle and Tina Harper.

Gina is survived by her husband of 30 years, Hassil “Hack” Pauley, daughter, Hannah, father, David Dodd, brother, Bobby Garcia and many nieces, nephews and family who will greatly miss her.

Expression of thanks to CAMC Memorial ER doctors and nursing staff team.

Service will be conducted at 6:00pm on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service.

Per Gina’s request, there will be no graveside service. There will be a private burial at Midkiff Cemetery, Sumerco, WV.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CAMC Cancer Center, 3415 MacCorkle Ave., SE, Charleston, WV 25304.

RICHARD EARL “DICK” KINDER, 74, of Procious, WV passed away on March 27, 2022 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 27, 1947, to Earl and Juanita Kinder in St. Albans. In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his sister Donna Jean Combow (Sam).

Dick married the love of his life 54 years ago, Connie Lou Mullins, on July 14, 1967 at Abney Street Church of God. Dick is survived by his wife, Connie; three sons: Richard Jr. “Rick”, Timothy (Rebecca), and Kenneth (Teri); nine grandchildren: Maggie, Ricky, Alex, Timmy, Jay, Hope, Jessica, Joseph, and Mason, and five great-grandchildren.

Dick was a 1965 graduate of St. Albans High School. After high school he was drafted into the United States Army where he proudly served his country in Vietnam. Dick had a strong work ethic and spent his career as a well-respected Professional Land Surveyor conducting boundary surveys, construction surveys, and oil and gas surveys. He lived in the Davis Creek area of Charleston until moving to Procious, Clay County, in 2005. He was a member of the South Charleston Masonic Lodge No 168 AF & AM, and the Thelma Chapter No. 24 Order of the Eastern Star in Clendenin. Dick enjoyed fishing on the Elk River and hunting with his sons and grandsons. He was an excellent cook and was famous in his family for his big breakfasts, especially his fluffy biscuits and blueberry pancakes. He also enjoyed gardening and working on various landscaping and building projects around his property.

Dick attended Southridge Church where he faithfully watched the services online when he could not attend in person. Dick was a hard worker during his career as a surveyor but he always put his family first. He was quick-witted, generous, loving and would always lend a helping hand. His life had a positive impact on everyone close to him and he will be missed beyond measure by those he leaves behind.

Funeral service will be at Southridge Church, 100 Eagle Drive, South Charleston, at 1:00pm on Thursday, March 31, 2022 with Pastor Scott Beha officiating. A graveside service with military rites will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans.

Visitation will be held at Southridge Church from noon until the time of service. Dick’s care has been entrusted to Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek. In lieu of flowers, Dick has requested that donations in his memory be sent to Southridge Church by visiting SRC.life

Jennifer Leigh Thaxton Green, 37, of Nitro, unexpectedly went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, March 24th, 2022.

Jennifer pursued her dream to become a licensed massage therapist and was also a medical assistant for Dr. Glenn Goldfarb. She loved being outdoors and had a passion for photography, taking beautiful pictures. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She was a loving wife and wonderful mother. Jennifer was a kindhearted person, always willing to help others and will be dearly missed

Jennifer is survived by her loving husband, Chris Green; daughter, Lillian Jane; son, Sean; mother and father, Randy and Kathi Thaxton; brother, Stevie (Heather) Thaxton; in-laws, George and Anita Green; nephews, Aden and Owen Thaxton, Avery Green; and many special cousins and family members who greatly miss her.

A gathering of family and friends will be 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at a later date with Mark Thaxton officiating.

Alice L. Atkins

Alice L. Atkins, 85, most recently of Seabrook, and longtime resident of Charleston, WV, went home to Jesus March 19, 2022, at 2:50 am after a lengthy illness. She was born in Beckley, WV on August 13, 1936, the daughter of the late Roy Ferris and Daphine (Wheeler) Ferris Painter and the late Snowden Painter.

Alice, with her husband Pastor Kenneth Atkins, a retired interim missionary clergyman for the Bible Missionary Church, traveled the country with their family helping churches become more stable. She faithfully served her church community spiritually and hosted many at her table.

Married on July 4, 1952, Alice shared nearly 70 years of marriage with her husband. She was dedicated as a wife and as a mother to six children. She spent many years following her dream as an accomplished seamstress making bridal gowns, doing custom sewing and alterations.

In addition to her husband, she leaves six children: Penny (Jerry) McCallister, Timothy (Susan) Atkins, all of Charleston, WV, Sandra (Warren) Whipple of Bloomingrose, WV, James (Thao) Atkins of Akron, OH, Joseph (Victoria) Atkins of Harrisville, RI and Deborah (Kurt) Groder of Seabrook, NH, with whom she resided. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by a grandchild and two great grandchildren.

Service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Janice Loretta Clark Stowers, 83, of Winfield, WV, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Harold Stowers, and parents, Mirrell & Hallene (Miller) Clark and brother William Gene Clark.

She is survived by her brother, Larry (Linda) Clark, sisters, Judy Hale and Mary (James) McCormick, uncle, Freddie Miller and many nieces and nephews that she loved as her own children.

Janice was a faithful member of Winfield Baptist Church (prior to covid). She will be remembered as a kind, loving and generous aunt and great aunt. As an elementary teacher and principal, she was one of the best. She loved playing Rook with friends and family and also had a love for traveling.

Service will be 1:00pm Thursday March 24, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors David Johns and Dakota Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

Family & friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Betty Jean Dunlap

Betty Jean Dunlap, 88, of Sod, went home to be with the Lord on Friday March 18, 2022, at Valley Health Village, South Charleston.

Betty was a lifetime member of McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church where she was well known for singing her favorite song “The Family Bible”, was a Sunday school teacher, and led the little believer’s choir for many years. She also worked at the Alum Creek Public Library for years.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Donald Ray Dunlap, her baby daughter, Kimberly, and her son, Donald “Coco” Dunlap; parents, Meddie and Mary Ketchum Graley; brother, Chuck and Jr. Graley, sister, Aunt Kat Pauley.

She is survived by her children, Meddie “Jigs” (Patty) Dunlap, Charlene (Jacky) Dunlap, Peggy (Jerry) Marker, Russell and David Dunlap; brother, Bobby Graley of Watha, NC; grandchildren, Debbie (John) Estep, Donna Dunlap, Donald Dunlap, Kim (Chad) Board, Kristy Wright, Kari Roberts, Donny Dunlap, Chris Dunlap, Paula (Brett) Matthews, Jason (Lorie) Dunlap, Jerrick (Brooke) Marker, Heather (Chad) Antill and Justin Dunlap; great grandchildren, Tiffany, Tim, John, Derick, Ericka, Allie, Patrick, Cecil, Dorothy, Kelley, Caleb, Connor, Katelyn, Payton, Lakynn, Brayden, Braxton, Emily, Joshua, Koree, Cody, Jerrick, Rayleigh, Addison and James; great great grandchildren, Sophia, Rowan, Berkley, Laney, Preslyn, Maddie and Delaney, Maddie and Maverick, and her faithful canine companion Bailey.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday March 22, 2022, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco.

Elizabeth Carol Webb, 75, of South Charleston, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmitt & Mildred Payne Neece and infant daughter, Kimberly.

Elizabeth is survived by her son & daughter-in- law, Vencil & Bridget Webb; brothers, Larry Neece, Dennis Neece, & Charles Neece; many nieces and nephews.

She will be laid to rest with her husband at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.
