Naomia Lou Byrd, 68, of Sod, died Monday, March 31, 2003 at CAMC General Division after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and May McCallister and her sisters, Beulah Tudor and Anna Ruth Nicholas.

She was a homemaker, a member of Alum Creek Church of Christ, and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her:
Husband: Calvin W.; 2 Sons: Charles “Butch” Byrd of Hurricane; Arthur Byrd of Sod; 1 Daughter: Debby Litton of Hurricane; 7 Grandsons, 4 Granddaughters, and 10 Great Grandchildren.

3 Brothers: Harvey McCallister, Jessie McCallister and Jim Woods all of Sod;
Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Friday, Apri14, 2003 at 2:00 PM with Minister Gerald Watts and Minister Richard Runyan officiating. Burial will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Thursday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Gerald A. “Jerry” Beach, 64 of Sumerco, died Sunday, March 30, 2003 at CAMC Memorial Division after an apparent heart attack.

He was a retired truck driver.

He is survived by his: Wife: Nora; Daughter and Son-in-law: Jennifer and Andrew Daniels of Sumerco; Sister: Dorothy Whanger of Milton; 2 Brothers: Buster Jack Beach of Williston, FL; Denny Beach of Sumerco; 2 Step-Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, Apri13, 2003 at 11:00 AM with Minister Gerald Watts and Minister Justin hnel officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

George Graley, Jr.

George Graley, Jr. 76, of Sumerco, Lincoln County, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, March 23, 2003 at home.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Trisha Graley.

He was retired from Armco Steel Coal Company with 40 years of service, a member of UMWA, an Army veteran of W WII and a member of the Potters House.

He is survived by his: Wife of 57 years, Eloise Loftis Graley; Daughter: Cheryl Redman of Sumerco; Five Sons: Terry Graley of Alum Creek; Roy and Brian Graley both of Cape Coral, FL; Barry and “Fitz” Graley both of Sumerco; Two Sisters: Agnes Pauley of Sod; Deloris Dunlap of Sumerco; 14 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Rick Hazless officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW #4768 will beheld in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Lena Stowers Owsley, 77 of Raleigh, North Carolina, formerly of Lincoln County, West Virginia died Saturday, March 22, 2003 in Raleigh Community Hospital after an extended illness.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Sand Fork Baptist Church, Griffithsville and a 1944 Graduate ofDuval High School. She was preceded in death by her parents, Scott and Virgie Adkins Stowers.

She is survived by her: Husband: Walter “Shorty” Owsley; 2 Daughters Pamula Spencer of Raleigh, NC; Sharon D. DeCamillis of Denver, CO; 4 Sons: James Owsley of Estill, KY; Keith Owsley of Brazil, IN; Darrell Owsley of Wheeling, WV; Ricky Owsley of Murray, KY; 19 Grandchildren; 14 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, March 27, 2003 at Cuny Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Henry Estep, Pastor Oshel Bell and Pastor Richard Ruby officiating. Burial will be at Orchard Hill Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary E. “Midge” Meadows, 79 of Hernshaw, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at CAMC Memorial Division.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Beauford Meadows and great granddaughter, Josie Lynn Christenberry.

She was a homemaker and a Protestant.

She is survived by her:
Daughter and Son-in-law: Linda and Steve Wood of Hernshaw; Sister: Maxine Richazds of Cleveland, OH; 2 Grandchildren: Stephanie Lynn Elliott and Steven Christopher Wood; 1 Great Grandson: Jaxson Christopher Bowles.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Friday, March 21, 2003 at 2:00 PM with Pastor David Wall officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call on Thursday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

She was a homemaker and a Presbyterian.

She is survived by her: Sister: Geraldine Wade of Hurricane; 3 Brothers: Delmar Blankenship of Scott Depot Ralph Blankenship of Pennsboro, WV; Tommy Blankenship of Allentown, PA.

Services will be 2:00 PM on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Walter E. Samples

Walter E. Samples, 88 of South Charleston, died Friday, March 14, 2003 in Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

He was a life-long farmer, construction worker and a member of the Builders and Trade Union.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Samples; two daughters, Barbara Lucas and Faye Burgess; eight sons, Roger, Ed, Bill, June, Jack, Bud, Whitey, and Ken; Several great great grandchildren and grandchildren; caregiver, Ruth Burnside, sister, Gussie King; brother, Lanty Samples, many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Strange Creek Baptist Church, Braxton County, on Sunday, Match 16, 2003 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Benjamin Pauley officiating. Burial will be held in Strange Creek Cemetery, Strange Creek, Braxton County. Friends may call on Saturday from 7 to 9 PM at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek and on Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church. Emil C. Cecil

Emil C. Cecil, 64, of Livingston, TX, formerly of Lincoln County, West Virginia, died March 7, 2003, at home from cancer.

He was born on July 19, 1938 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Ezra and Melda Cecil, who proceeded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his only sister, Mavareen, and first wife, Shelby Pauley Cecil and son, Mark.

Mr. Cecil was retired from the Engineering Dept., Houston, TX with over 40 years of service. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and loved the outdoors.

Mr. Cecil is survived by: 2 Sons: Chad Cecil of Hurricane, WV Rodney Cecil of Cross Lanes, WV; Daughter & son-in-law: Shana and Stephen Pratte of Lemoore, CA
Grandchildren: Benjamin and Shelby Cecil of Charleston, WV Conor Pratte of Lemore, CA.  He also left behind a special brother, Thom Winters of Houston, TX.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with the Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Lively Cemetery, McCorkle, WV. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Friday, March 7, 2003 at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey with Minister Murrel McKinney officiating. Curry Funeral Home at Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.
