Madeline Harmon

Madeline Harmon, 79, of St. Albans, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2025, at CAMC-Memorial Division.    

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Harmon, parents, Creed & Ruth Pauley McCallister, companion, Owens Means, sisters, Shirley Legg, Macil Truman and Elsie Barker, brothers, Billy McCallister, Jackie McCallister, and grandson, William “Bub” Harmon.

Madeline was a former employee of Ellis’ Grocery, South Hills. She loved to relax on her porch and watch the river.

She is survived by her daughters, Naomi Gray (Jamie) and Leenora White (Gary), sons, Harvey Harmon (Jane), and Billy Wayne Harmon, brothers, Jerry (Penny) McCallister and Eddie McCallister, sister, Maybelle Buranamontri.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kayla, Nick, Michael, Marissa, Serena, Devin, Kirsten, Austin, Sarah, Amber, and Jessie, 9 great-grandchildren, and special nieces, Barbara Ann Scott and Norma Lee Roberts along with many other nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be 2:00pm Sunday, April 27, 2025, at the McCallister Cemetery, Alum Creek, with Michael White officiating.

Earl (Eddie) E. Holstein, Jr., 60, of Ashford, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 21, 2025, at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long battle of lung disease.

Earl was a salesman at Deka Battery Company for over 25 years before becoming a coal miner for Coal River Energy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Sr. and Barbara Holstein; and his son-in-law, Joshua Mullins.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Lou Holstein; daughter, Nyoka (Aaron) Taylor of Hernshaw; daughter, Bobbie (Jared) Lambert of Barrett; son, Levi (Lindsey) Holstein of Ashford; and his most prized possessions, his grandchildren, Chace, Wyatt, Julien, Allyson, Aubrey, Kaegan, and Austyn.  He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lou Holstein (Punkin, Eddie’s beloved best friend); brother, Terry Holstein (Mitzi); brother, Chad Holstein (Tiffany); sister, Mechelle Dunlap (David); and several nieces and nephews.

As per Earl’s wishes, he will be cremated, and a memorial service will be 4pm, Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Racine Volunteer Fire Department, 400 Volunteer Street, Racine WV.

Billy Joe Matthews

Billy Joe Matthews, 81, of Alum Creek, WV, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Thomas Memorial Hospital-WVU Medicine, South Charleston. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dell & Irene Matthews, siblings, David Matthews, Frances Elkins, Marsha Pauley and Steve Matthews.

Bill was a union pipefitter, Local #625, for over 50 years and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gloria “Peaches”, sons, Brett (Paula) Matthews and Bryan (Leah) Matthews, and two grandsons, Tyler Matthews and Selina, and Cody Matthews and Emma.

He will be cremated and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Darlene Miller Adkins

Darlene Miller Adkins, 65, of Sumerco passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 12, 2025, surrounded by her family.

She gave the “Gift of Life” by being an organ donor so she can live through others.

Darlene is survived by her children, Melissa (Jamie) Workman and Anthony (Rachel) Adkins.
Darlene had four grandchildren that she loved dearly: Tiffani (Dakota) Yense, Tyler Workman, Isabella Adkins, and Isaac Adkins. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Delores (Dave) Hughes, Doris (Walter) Smith, Beverly Steele, Thomas (Cheryl) Miller, and Allen (Brenda) Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Martha Miller and three brothers, Kenneth Miller, Delmas Miller, and Gary Miller.

A viewing will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek on Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 12-2pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to help with funeral expenses to Curry Funeral Home.

John Ray Curry

John Ray Curry, 70, of Myrtle Beach, SC, formerly of St. Albans, WV, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Friday, April 11, 2025, at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, SC.

He is preceded in death by his father, Gene Curry, son, Richard Lee Barnett, grandson, Troy Daniel Barnett and great-grandson, Waylon Scott Barnett.

He was 1972 graduate of Duval High School, graduated from WV State College and Beckley Mortuary College. He was a licensed funeral director and embalmer and worked alongside his dad and brothers at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, and Casdorph-Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, WV. He was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, WV, where he served as a deacon.

John is survived by his wife of 41 years, Donna, mother, Betty Curry, brothers, Clenton (Gail), Randy (Gail), and Todd (Lori) Curry, sons, Pete (Cathy), Jeff (Carla) Barnett, daughters, Tiffany and Ashley, grandchildren, Chad, Brandon, Blake, Briana, Rick Barnett, Myles and Neena and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 2:00pm, Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans, WV 25177 with Pastor Jason Robbins officiating. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service at the church. All in attendance are welcome to stay for a meal following the service.

Howard Junior Redman

Howard Junior Redman, 72, of Sumerco passed away Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 29, 1953, to the late Howard and Genevieve Redman.

Howard was a member of the United States Navy. He was a retired mine worker and a member of the UMWA. He loved to fish and spend time with his family. He always made it a point to be there for his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Cheryl Redman whom he loved to the moon and back. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Sam Redman.

Howard is survived by his son, Shane (Kristen) Redman; grandchildren, Tyler (Kalyn) Redman, Shayna and Piper Redman, Gaige Searls; sisters, Ann (Danny) Justice, Grace (D.A.) Morgan, Kathy (Gary) Kersey; brother, Joe (Cindy) Redman; also, a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends.

Service will be 1:00pm, Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating. Burial will follow at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar. Family and friends will gather two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Junior “Buddy” McCallister, 85, of Griffithsville passed away Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Buddy was a retired union painter and a 60-year member of Union Local 970. He was a member of Duval Hunting Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy McCallister; parents, Guy and Inis Dragoo McCallister; siblings, Thelma Phelps, Maxine Nunn, Nellie Mitchell, Erma Welch, Mary Pollard, and Denver “Buck” McCallister.

Buddy is survived by his children, Joey McCallister and Kristen (Terry) Thompson; grandchildren, Megan (Scott) Bays, Owen and Hudson Thompson, Triston McCallister; great grandson, Kole Bays; siblings, Sylvia Bird, Bill (Linda) McCallister, and Sue (Butch) Griffith.

Graveside service will be 2:00pm, Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Isaiah Hatfield officiating. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service at the cemetery.

Doris Kidd Roberts

Doris Kidd Roberts, 92, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Hubbard Hospice House West. 

She attended Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church all her life, where she sang in the choir.  She worked at G. C. Murphy in South Charleston for 41 years. 

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Terry Roberts; parents, Dexter and Mildred Kidd; son, Greg Nunn; brothers, Ronald and Calvin Kidd. 

Left to miss her greatly is her niece, Dottie Bladen and her husband, Dale.

Service will be 11:00am, Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Clyde Gwin officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek.  Visitation will begin at 10:30am.

Larry Allen Tackett

Larry Allen Tackett, 81, of Yawkey went to be with the Lord, Thursday, March 27, 2025, at WVU Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Larry was a member of Alum Creek Church of Christ, where he served as a Deacon for over 40 years. He was a retired science teacher, teaching at Washington District Jr. High and Andrew Jackson Middle School.  He was a 1961 graduate of Duval High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from WV State College, and his Master’s of Secondary Science from College of Graduate Studies. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Martha Owen Tackett.

Larry is survived by his wife of 53 years, Darlene Tackett; children, Dr. Jason (Missy) Tackett, Amber (Andy) Kinder, and Justin (Johnna) Tackett; grandchildren, Aiden and Bailey Tackett, Reece Tackett, Shane (Autumn) Wells, Codie (Danica) Wells, Rylie Wells, Alyssa (Eric) Jackson, Laci (Seth) Kimberly; great grandchildren, Levi Wells, Addie Jackson, Grayson Jackson; brother, Louie (Reda) Tackett.

Larry loved his family fiercely.  He had a special bond with all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He never knew a stranger and enjoyed telling stories to his family and friends. He loved to sing, especially gospel hymns and made God a priority in his life. He was a good man, loved by his family and friends. 

Visitation will begin at 1:00pm and the service will be 3:00pm, Sunday, March 30, 2025, at Curry Funeral Home with Minister Joseph Watts officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  

Princess Cassy Bays, 40, of Tornado, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at CAMC – General.

She was a 2004 St. Albans High School Graduate and attended Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church. She also attended the International Sports Jamboree at North Bend State Park for at least 32 years. Her final gift was a donation of 2 kidneys, now others can live on because of her.

Cassy is survived by her grandmother, Ilona Walton Bays, parents, Cameron & Twylla Worstell Bays, sisters, Tiffany Burns (Steven), Kaylla Bays (Traz Dawson), and Alyssa Brogan (Brandon) and a very special friend, Kim Minney. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Jacob Burns (Alexis Slater), Cameron Bays, Mason Burns, Adalyn and Grayson Dawson, Oaklynn Brogan, and Great Neice Delilah Allagas, many aunts, uncles, and countless cousins. Cassy was the most precious young lady who touched so many lives in her 40 years. Now she is dancing with Jesus in Heaven.

Service will be 1:00pm Thursday, March 27, 2025, with Pastor Daniel Dent officiating. Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, WV. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
