Patricia “Pat” Atkins Whitten Elkins, age 86, of St. Albans, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2025, at Hubbard Hospice House, following a prolonged period of health challenges.
Pat was born to Don Atkins and Marigold Linville Atkins, who preceded her in death, as did her first husband of 33 years, Joe Whitten. She was a proud graduate of Duval High School, Class of 1956. Pat went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in education from Morris Harvey College (now the University of Charleston) in 1967, and later her master’s in education from West Virginia University in 1970.
Pat devoted 27 years to teaching at Belvil Elementary School in St. Albans, where she touched the lives of countless fifth-grade students. She cherished reconnecting with former students and took great pride in their achievements.
After retiring from teaching, Pat continued her life of service as a dedicated volunteer at Thomas Hospital for 25 years. Her warmth, kindness, and genuine interest in others made her a friend to all she met. Pat was truly a people person.
A faithful and active member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in St. Albans, Pat found joy and purpose in her church community.
Pat is survived by her loving husband of 26 years, James “Bob” Elkins; her son, Bruce Alan Whitten; her brothers, Billy Atkins (Carolyn) of Morgantown and Ted Atkins (Margie) of Alum Creek; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish her memory. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Percy, who quickly won her heart and was always on her mind.
In accordance with her wishes, Pat will be cremated. Visitation will be held at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in St. Albans on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025, beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Peter’s United Methodist Church Food Pantry.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the compassionate staff at Hubbard Hospice House for their excellent care.
