James “Jim” Cardwell, Jr. 85, of South Charleston, died February 5, 2009, after a brief illness. He was a native of McDowell County and the son of Rufus Franklin and Lena Vell (Burnett) Cardwell. His early work life included more than a decade in coal mining, In 1960, he and his family moved to Charleston where he began a successful association with The Prudential Insurance Company. Between 1971 and 1997, he was named twenty-four times to Prudential’s prestigious Million Dollar Round Table.

The continuing influence of Jim’s life is felt through his gift for developing relationships and forging friendships. His generosity of spirit was expressed in many ways, private and public, including support of the University of Charleston, the Church of Nazarene, and West Virginia Health Right. He was a proud West Virginian with a gift for storytelling and a wicked sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Joseph, Mason, and Daniel. He is survived by his beloved and loving wife of nearly sixty-five years, Loretta June (Dove) Cardwell; their children and spouses, Connie Snodgrass of Leesburg, VA; Beverly DeBord of Springfield, OH; Karen Teel and husband Brooks Teel of South Charleston; Nancy Knurek and husband, Chuck Knurek of South Charleston; Cathy McCue and husband, David McCueof Plano, TX; David Cardwell and wife, Laura Cardwell of Abilene, TX; grandchildren and spouses John Snodgrass of Washington, D.C.: Elizabeth Snodgrass of London England; Charles DeBord and wife, Amanda DeBord of Lexington, KY; Rodgers Harshbarger and wife, Kate Harshbarger of Chapel Hill, NC; Sam Harshbarger of South Charleston; John Michael Harshbarger of Morgantown; Bryan Knurek and wife, Holly Knurek of Milford Center, OH; Melissa Buckley and husband Jacob Bucklew of Fairmont, WV; Allison Taylor and husband, Jamie Taylor of Alexandria, VA; Katie Vaden and husband, Ray Vaden of Porter, TX; Chris Cardwell and wife Jami Cardwell of San Antonio, TX; great granddaughters: Kennedy Knurek, Lucy Harshbarger and Katharine Snodgrass; sister, Margaret Geneva Ball of Tazewell, VA; and brother, Franklin Lane Cardwell of Auburndale, FL.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with the Reverend Kent Estep of South Charleston First Church of Nazarene officiating. Viewing will be from 1:00-2:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park.  Memorial donations may be made to First Church of the Nazarene, 4923 Kentucky St., South Charleston, WV 25309 and West Virginia Health Right, 1520 Washington St. E. Charleston, WV 25311.

Robert “Bob” Wade

Robert “Bob” Wade, 43, of Griffithsville, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2009, at home after a sudden illness.  He was an employee of Ashworth Mobile Home Movers and a farmer. Bob was a good husband, father, son and a friend who would do anything for anybody.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa; five daughters, Jenni Lynn, Connie Marie, Becky Renee, Sara Hope and Keri Dawn; mother, Erma Wade; one sister, Janice Fore; four brothers, Freeman, Bill, Dale and Joe; several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Homer Hensley officiating. Friends will gather from 5 to 7 p.m on Sunday at the funeral home.  The burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the Samson Cemetery, Garretts Bend.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the funeral home.

Nellie Faye McClure

Nellie Faye McClure, 82, of Sumerco went home to the Lord Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at home surrounded by family and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbert O. “Pugh” McClure, 3 children Priscilla “Pat” Holt, Alice Faye and Darrell Ray. Parents Archie and Rev. Angie Williams. Sisters Cornia Loftis Tribble and Carrie Johnson and she was a member of Summitt Community Church.

She is survived by her Daughters; Mariam Tackett of Cincinnati, Ohio and Darlene Mae Tackett (JR) of Sumerco. Sons; Rev. Dwight McClure (Janet) of Sumerco, Gilbert McClure (Joyce) of North Port, Florida and Rev. P. Timothy McClure (Jenny) of Melbourne, Florida.  Also survived by 16 Grandchildren 25 Great Grandchildren 2 Great-Great Grandchildren; Sisters; Ruth Cornell of Woodville and Ann Egnor (Carl) of Sumerco. Brother; John Williams (Jean) of Dayton, Ohio.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, February 7 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastors Dwight & Tim McClure and Chuck Adkins officiating. Burial will be in the Pauley Cemetery at Woodville. Friends may gather two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Betty Gillenwater Dunlap

Betty Gillenwater Dunlap, 64, of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, February 3, 2009 surrounded by family and friends.  She was preceded in death by husband, Billy; parents, Wilkie and Ella Gillenwater; brother, James Gillenwater.  She attended Morning Star House of Prayer at Ridgeview. 

She is survived by her sons, Billy (Lisa), and Frederick (Nancy) both of Yawkey, Alvie (Mary) of Nitro; daughters, Alice King and Belinda (Chris) Smith both of Pine Grove; four grandchildren, Amanda, Mike, Chris and Riley; step-grandson, Curtis; brothers, Darrell and Kenny Gillenwater; sisters, Helen Steele, Ruby Sandt and Janet Estep; and lots of friends.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors Barry Meadows and Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco. Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorial contributions be made to the funeral home

Judy K. McClure

Judy K. McClure, 62 of Sod, went home to be with the Lord, Monday February 2, 2009 at CAMC Memorial after a long illness.  She was a member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church at Yawkey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Barry; parents: Rev. Willis & Shirley Nicholas.  She is survived by her sons: Barry McClure (Judi) of Charleston; Matthew McClure (Erin) of Grants, New Mexico; Sister: Iva Sowards of Alum Creek; Brothers: Phillip Nicholas of Sod and Timothy Nicholas

Funeral will be 11:00 AM Thursday, February 5, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Lively Cemetery at Sod. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dr. Arnold Jarrett Given, Jr. of Saint Albans went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at home with his loving family.  Dr. Given was born on March 28, 1924 in Sharlow, West Virginia. He served as a Navy and Marine Medic in World War II.. He graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor and Masters Degree. He also held a Masters Degree in Anatomy and a Doctorate in DDS, (Dentistry), from Ohio State University. While attending Ohio State University, he was a member of the Army National Guard and completed his 32 years in the armed services with the West Virginia Air National Guard, retiring as a Brigadier General.  

Dr. Given retired from his dental practice in South Charleston after 44 year. He was a member of the Kanawha Valley Dental Society, West Virginia Dental Association, past president of the Academy of General Dentistry and was a member of the American Dental Association. He was an active member of the Highlawn Baptist Church, serving on many boards and also teaching Sunday School.  Dr. Given was proceeded in death by his father and mother, the late Dr. Arnold J. Given and Theo Wilson Given; his brother Leslie Walter Given and an infant son.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Given, daughter Carolyn Given Kopco and husband, Gary of St. Petersburg, Florida, Sons: Robert E. Given and Dr. Arnold J. Given III both of St. Albans, Kenneth T. Given and wife, Peggy of Charleston, and David P. Given and wife Susan of St. Albans. Grandchildren, Lindsay Kopco, Lauren Kopco Bryant both of St. Petersburg, Florida, Michelle Given Moore and husband Larry of Belmont, North Carolina, Jeffrey A. Given and his fiancé Rachel Straight of Cross Lanes. Great grandchildren, Brayden and Casen Moore of Belmont, North Carolina. He is also survived by his sister Doris Jeanne Lampton of Oakridge, Tennessee.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 31 from6 to 8 PM at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave. St. Albans. Funeral services will be Sunday February 1, at 2:00 PM at the Highlawn Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow at the Given Family Cemetery at Elkview, West Viginia.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Highlawn Baptist Church Memorial Fund or Hospice of Kanawha Valley or the charity of your choice

Margo D. Ginn

Margo D. Ginn, 62, of St Albans passed away Friday, Jan 23, 2009 at home after a long illness.  She went to meet her Savior and to see her parents, Ernie & Ethel Pauley, her sisters, Janice & Nancy and her brother, Leon. 

Margo was a loving mother & “gram”and is survived by:   Daughter: Darlene Chandler, son & daughter in law: Robert & Emily Gillespie; Grandchildren: Joshua & Alicyn Chandler; Robbie & Isaiah Gillespie; Sisters: Patricia Sisson (Frank), Sharon Mann (Bob); Brother: Charles Pauley (Mildred), as well as many nieces & nephews.

Carol L. Meadows

Carol L. Meadows, 72, of Joe’s Creek, formerly of Peytona, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, January 11, 2009 at home.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Rhoda M. Withrow; sister, Rebecca Brookshire; and son, Michael Meadows.  She was an active member of Joe’s Creek Baptist Church and was a beautiful, loving wife, mother and friend.

She is survived by:   Husband of 54 years: James M. Meadows; Daughter: Marge A. Boughton of NC; Sons: James “Joe” Meadows of AZ, John A. Meadows of Cleveland, OH, John, Jr. of St. Albans,  7 grandchildren;  Sisters:  Julia A. Pauley of Sod; RoxAnn Griffith of Dayton, OH; Brothers: James F. Pauley of NC; Robert A. Pauley, Sr., of Sod. 

Service will be 1:00 PM Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Butch Leadman officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Alice Loraine Pauley

Alice Loraine Pauley, 84, of So. Charleston, entered this world on August 6, 1924, to the loving parents Delbert and Gertrude Hoffman of So. Charleston, and she departed this life on January 11, 2009.   She passed while in the tender care of Belle’s assisted living home in Saint Albans, who assisted her in her long illness.

Alice was preceded in death by her only son Ronnie Pauley, her husband, Garret Pauley, parents, and nine brothers and sisters.  She is survived by only her loving sister, Bernice Rabel and many nieces and nephews.  Alice was quiet, soft spoken and never uttered harsh words towards anyone. Her spirit was compassionate, kindly natured, and blessed with the gentlest heart which had room only for friends, as she never made an enemy. She was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church in So. Charleston.   A graveside memorial service will be held at Graceland Memorial Park So. Charleston.

Patricia Gail Holstein

Patricia Gail Holstein, 50 of Alum Creek passed away Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.  She is survived by her  husband, Joseph, children Mooney Smith and Patricia Laton, mother Mary Lou Smith, brothers Tommy, Ronnie and Terry Smith, half-brother John Smith, 2 grandchildren, 6 nephews and 2 nieces.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Wednesday at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Mark Thaxton officiating. Burial will be at the Smith Family Cemetery Alum Creek. Friends may gather from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
