Michael Ray Smith, 48 of Alum Creek went home to the Lord Wednesday May 20, 2009 at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness. He was a former employee with Helrohn Insulation in Cleveland, and a construction worker. Michael is survived by his mother, Margaret Bozak, brothers, Jimmy and Danny, sisters, Anna Bell Smith Slate, Sheila Horvath, Montana Hager, Kathy Smith and Irene Dotson, and a host of nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held at Midkiff Cemetery at a later date
Athalene M. Pauley Tackett, 89, of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, May 17, 2009. She was the oldest member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Sod and was preceded in death by her husband Kelley, son Ted and two grandsons Everett Tackett and Kenny Marker, parents Otto H. and Essie P. Pauley, and 2 brothers William and Odie Pauley.
Athalene is survived by her 2 daughters, Judy (Tommy) Quintrell and Sue (Mike) Kingrey both of Alum Creek, siblings, Dona Phillips, Otto Pauley, Helen Moore, Arthur Pauley, Emma White and Virginia Lewis. 9 grandchildren, Teresa (Russell) Breedlove, Pam (Joey) Dunlap, Melinda (Bobby) Ray, Jimmy Marker, Teddy (Cheryl) Tackett, Scott Kingrey, Todd (Cheryl) Kingrey, Michael (Annie) Quintrell, and Jeff (Jennifer) Quintrell. 13 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Thursday, May 21 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Clarence Hutton, and Teddy Tackett, Jr. officiating. Burial will be held at Orchard Hill Memory Gardens at Yawkey. Family and friends will gather from 5 to 8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.
Clarence D. (B.O.) Adkins 69, of Griffithsville died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital in So Charleston after a long illness. B.O. served 2 years in the U.S. Army. He was a retired sprinkler fitter with Brewer & Co of WV, a member of Local 669, Griffithsville Masonic Lodge AF & AM # 71, Duval VFD and was a Charter member of the Duval Hunting Club.
He is survived by his wife: Dianna; Brothers: Fred & Frank Adkins both of Yawkey; Sisters: Evelyn Oxley of Davis Creek, Pearl Watts of Dunbar, and Hazel Hill of Spring Hill; Several Nieces, Nephews and a host of friends.
Services will be 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Rd., Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell Officiating. Burial with Masonic Gravside Rites conducted by the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens at Yawkey,. Margaret Jane Hughes, 71, of Hurricane, formerly of McCorkle, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at home after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garnith E. Hughes and parents, John and Alice Totten.
She was retired from Union Carbide and the Charleston Marriott. She was a Christian. She is survived by her children, Sharon Oldaker of Alum Creek, Richard Hughes of St. Albans, Susan Hughes of Charleston, Teresa Hudson of Alum Creek, Scott Hughes of Cross Lanes, Tammy Woodall of Hurricane, and Rosalyn Anderson of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Eric, Jeremy, Chris, Nichole, Jason, Shaun, Emily, Robbie, Amber, Jade, and Maddie; great grandchildren, Damian, Malia, Drew, Aiden, and Emma; brothers, Franklin Totten, Jimmy Totten, Paul Totten, Bobby Totten; sisters, Elizabeth Hill, Ann Sparks, Edythe Williamson and Joyce Wallace.

Christopher Ralph Pauley, 43, of Garretts Bend, Sod, died Sunday, May 3, 2009 at home after a short illness. He was a 1983 graduate of Duval High School, member of the 1983 state championship football team and attended Glenville State College. He was owner operator of C P Hardwood.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents James Andrew and Betty Pauley, and Dell and Irene Matthews, and parents Ralph and Marsha Pauley, and sister Deborah “Lynn” Wood. Chris is survived by his sister Jill (Dana) Snyder, brothers Joey (Orla) Pauley, and James S. (Sheree) Pauley. Seven nieces and nephews, Luke (Amber) Wood, Emily Suzanne (Michael) Burton, Jett, Ali-Jo, Cole, Annie Grace, and Jake. Four great nieces and nephews, Savannah and Abigail, Nevaeh and Dakota.
Graveside service will be 1:00 pm Thursday at the Pauley Family Cemetery on Joe’s Creek Road at Garretts Bend with Kim Matthews officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, at the home of Ralph and Marsha Pauley.
Gertrude V. Stotler, 85, of Alum Creek, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at home after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Stotler. She is survived by her six sons, Denver and (Virginia) Stotler of Middlesboro, Kentucky, John and (Shirley) Stotler, Randy and (Rebecca) Stotler and Calvin Stotler all of Ft. Pierce, Florida, David and Dale Stotler, both of Brounland; eight daughters, Shirley Hill of Ruthlawn, Patricia Clendenin of Ft. Pierce, Florida, Betty and (Kelly) Tyler of Brounland, Kathy and (Tim) Kemper of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, Helen and (Dave) Linahan of Ashland, Kentucky, Sandra and (Fred) Thomas of Brounland, Gale and (Bill) Foster of Spencer and Tonya Metton of Tornado; 21 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

Lillian H. “Tom” Clark, 71 of Sod, passed away Tuesday April 21, 2009 at home after a short illness. She was a member of the Ely Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her sister Mabel Thacker.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer, daughter; Susan (Mark) Austin, sons; Elmer Ray (Evelyn) Clark, Tony (Sandy) Clark, Chris (Leslie) Clark, Mark (Beth) Clark, step son; Rex (Beverly) Moore. Sisters Della Clay, Vicky Wright, Euna Mae King and Portlee Clark, brothers; Harvey, James “Corbet” and Larry Angel. Grandchildren Shanda, Ashley, Nikki, Bambam, Christopher, Hailey, Savannah, and Chase. Great Grandson; Austin.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Friday April 24 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Burial will be at the Miller Cemetery at McCorkle. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
Lonzo Reed, 79 of Sumerco, West Virginia passed away April 20, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Stanley Reed; sister Helen Miller, Virgie Waddle, Gladys Ariens and Clarabelle Townsend. He is survived by his 13 children; Diana Reed, Darlene Riehle, Donna Overstreet, Debra Wiggers, Della Chapman, Denise Bostic, David Reed, Daniel Reed, Dennis Reed, Don Reed, Darrell Reed, Dale Reed and Douglas Reed; 23 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; sister Pearl Feller; Brother Benny Reed.
A memorial service will be Saturday May 2, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Schilling Memorial Community Center 900 Mill Street, Brookville, Indiana 47012. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Brookville.
Major Harold F. May, died April 16, 2009 at Teays Valley Center in Hurricane. Major May was born July 21, 1916, at Yawkey, the third son of Claude T. And Lula Curry May. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Bessie Thornton May, an infant daughter, Terri Lynn May, a sister Dewy Kerns, and brothers Howard, Marvin and Claude, Jr.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Teal and grandson, Christopher Teal, both living in Rehoboth Beach, DE. At Harold’s request, there will be no visitation or services. His body has been cremated and joins Bessie’s in God’s Glorious, Eternal Heaven. His remains will rest in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery.
Marie Zirkle, 88, of Hurricane, formerly of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, April 16, 2009 at home after a short illness.
Marie is survived by her companion, Walter Means; Daughter, Jean Nun; Son, Butch (Patricia) Zirkle; Step-daughter, Joyce Bailey; Step-son, Paul Zirkle. Six grandchildren: Cindy Pauley, Karen Hill, David (Angie) Nunn, Rebecca (Donnie) Matthews, Elana Marie (Jimmy) Collins and Chelsea (Jarrod) Carter. Five step-grandchildren: Ronnie and David Bailey, Anita Parish, and Tim and Mark Zirkle; Seven great-grandchildren; several step-great-great grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons and beloved pet, Princess.
