Virginia Ruth Cash, 83, of Covington, Kentucky, formerly of Griffithsville, died Tuesday, November 22, 200s at St. Elizabeth Hospital South, Edgewood, Kentucky.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Denver; parents, Emmitt and Reva Stowers, brothers, Moss and Denzil Stowers; sister, Gail McMellon.

She was retired from Lincoln County Board of Education where she worked as a cook at Griffithsville Elementary and was a lifelong member of Griffithsville Church of Christ.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Cash and companion, Stephanie and her children, Tim, Lorrie, Kelsey, Sean and Tayler Ferguson; daughter, Carol Vandale and husband, James of South Chazleston; brother, Jack Stowers of Alkol, four granddaughters, Kelly Varney, Tracy Arkell, Dani and Alex Cash; one grandson, James Vandale; two great grandsons, Chase and Dylan Arkell.

Service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, November 26, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Minister Murrel McKinney officiating. Burial will be in McDowell Cemetery, Garretts Bend. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Avis Ruth Hughes 73 of St. Albans went to be with the Lord, Tuesday November 22, 2005 at home after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delford Hughes; Father: Levi Burton Hamrick; Brother: Herman Hamrick.

She is survived by her: Mother: Ettie Hamrick of Summersville; 2 Daughters: Yvonne Walters of St. Albans Diana Hughes of Charleston; 3 Sons: Kenneth Wayne and James of Chazleston Franklin of Columbus, Ohio; 2 Sisters: Mary Lewis of Nettie; and Bonnie Hanna of Summersville; 2 Brothers: David Hamrick of Summersville; and Lawrence Hamrick of Michigan; Several Grandchildren;

Graveside service and burial will be 1:00 PM Friday, November 25, 2005 at the Sirk Cemetery at Duck, with Rev 011ie Parsons officiating. There will be no visitation. Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Alice Hess

Mary Alice Hess, 77, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 21, 2005 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, surrounded by family and loved ones.
She was a clerk for Atlantic Greyhound, Charleston and a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church, Alum Creek.

She is survived by her husband, George; five sisters, Eula Pauley, Ruth Duvall, Amalee Griffith, Betty Ann Pauley all of South Chazleston, Monna Jean Griest of Ripley; two brothers, Lowell Pauley of South Charleston, Elmer Pauley of Chazleston; a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors Dwight McClure, Lloyd Humphreys, and Gene Pauley officiating. Entombment will be held in Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum, South Charleston. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Mary E. Sisson, 90 of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday November 15, 2005 at home after a short illness.

She was a homemaker and 70 year member of Briar Creek Baptist Church. A loving wife, mother, grandmother &Christian who loved and served the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Homer and Beulah Means; husband, Earl; son, Wayne; brother Dewey Means; sister, Pauline Chandler; special son-in-law, Ron Hunt.

She is survived by: 2 Daughters: Betty Howerton of Huntington; Connie Hunt of South Charleston; 2 Sons: Frank Sisson of South Charleston; Jerry Sisson of Kenna; 1 Sister: Loraine White of Lexington, NC; 15 Grandchildren; 22 Great Grandchildren; 4 Great Great Grandchildren.

Service will be 11:00 AM Friday, November 18, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Tommy Roberts and her grandson, Pastor Kevin Howerton officiating. Paul Gregory Dunlap

Paul Gregory Dunlap, 51, of Pine Grove Road died at home Friday, November 11, 2005 after a long battle with cancer.

He was a disabled coal miner with Pinnoak Resources of Adger, Alabama and a member of UMWA loca12133.

Paul is survived by:

2 Daughters: Paula Dunlap of Charleston; Christina Dunlap of Hamlin; Mother: Shirley Dunlap of Sumerco; 1 Brother: Tim Dunlap of Ashland, KY; 1 Sister: Erin Stephens of South Charleston; 2 Grandchildren: Kaleb and Cameron Cooper both of Hamlin; 4 Nephews: Matt Dunlap of Sumerco; Adam and Shannon Stephens, both of Huntington; Craig Dunlap of Alum Creek; several Aunts and Uncles.

Joel Mack Whitlock

Farewell for now, Joel “Mack” Whitlock, beloved husband and father who was taken unexpectedly form his family on Tuesday, Nov 8, 2005.
Mack, 73, of South Charleston was a retired installer for Western Electric \ AT & T with 32 years service. He also greatly enjoyed 20 years of retirement with his loving wife and was a Korean War Air Force Veteran.

Chiltie McCormick, Jr.

Chiltie McCormick Jr., 77 of Sumerco, died Monday, November 7, 2005 at Meadowbrook Acres, Charleston, after a long illness.

“JR” was born November 27,1927 the son of the late Chiltie Rufus and Jewel McClure McCormick. He was preceded in death by his wife and friend forever, Barbara White McCormick; brothers, Lyle and Boyce.

He was member of the WV Laborers Union, a WWII Anny veteran, a Christian who loved the Lord and he also loved to rabbit hunt, trout fish, play guitar, sing and dance. He liked George Jones, Hank Williams and gospel music. He had a beautiful tenor voice and when he wasn’t singing he was falling in some trout stream getting soaked to the bone.

He is survived by three children, Charles David McCormick of Sumerco and fiance, Debra Tompkins, Debra “TJ” Vickers and husband, James of Big Chimney, Franklin Wayne McCormick and wife, Elaine of Cross Lanes; grandchildren, Cali McCormick, Vesper and husband, Zach Miller, Leah and Seth McCormick; great grandchildren, Raven McCormick, Sparrow McCormick and one in the oven; sisters, Fannie Dickens, Bertie Lou Pauley, Dorothy Ash, Patricia Perks and Dovey Shaffer.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Richazd McCallister officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Chazleston. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Emma Louise Spears Chandler

Emma Louise Spears Chandler, 87 of Alum Creek, born May 19, 1918, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 6, 2005 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a long illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred S. Chandler; parents, Elmer and Mary Dillon Spears; sister, Jo Estep and two grandsons, Brian Sutphin and Jason Chandler.

Louise attended the Independent Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek.

She is survived by four daughters, Genomia and Louis Kovar of Brook Pazk, Ohio, Ann and Larry Sutphin of Tornado, Gail and Butch Griffith of Alum Creek, and Sue and Jerry Wade of Yawkey; four sons, Charles and Katha, Jimmie and Marcia Chandler all of Alum Creek, Keith and Libby, Ray and Sherie Chandler all of Tornado; two sisters, Delores Leffingwell and Helena Hammonds of Proctorville, Ohio; brother, Pete Spears of Kentucky; 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by family, friends and neighbors.

Services will be 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will in Pine Grove Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Dorothy Dean (Layman Mellen)

Dorothy Dean (Layman) Mellen, of St. Albans, passed away peacefully at 6:39 PM October 31, 2005 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC after an extended illness.

Born in Hartford, TN on January 31, 1922, Mrs. Mellen was a graduate of Cocke County High School in Newport, TN and Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN and held a Masters Degree in education from Marshall University. She worked as a junior chemist for the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, TN and participated in Amateur Athletic Union basketball, tennis and bowling during and after World War II.

She touched the lives of many with her generosity, creativity and strength of character through her service as a girl scout leader, in her teaching of science and coaching of girl’s tennis and basketball at Hayes Junior High School from 1967 to 1984, and through her active involvement with Highlawn Baptist Church and the American Baptist Women’s Association after the family moved to St. Albans in 1949.

She and Gilbert Emery Mellen married in 1944 while both were working at Oakridge, TN. Gilbert predeceased her in 2000.

She is survived by their children, Deanne and husband, Bill Moore of King, NC, Gene and wife, Ann Mellen of Lansing, MI, Catherine LeGrand of Durham, NC; grandchildren, Erin Gray, Jennifer Moore and Christopher Mellen; step-grandchildren, Colon Moore, Julie Sedlacek and Robbi Puckett; sisters, Dollois Underwood of Sumter, SC, Donna Lewis of Newport, TN; six nephews.
The family wishes to express their immense gratitude to all of Dorothy’s friends in St. Albans, especially neighbors and members of her church, who helped her maintain a high level of independence for so many years.

The visitation will be held at Highlawn Baptist Church from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 3, and the funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, November 4 with Dr. Joe Hyde officiating. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, W V. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Highlawn Baptist Church Building Fund, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans, WV 25177.

William H. Shivelier

William H. Shivelier, 79, of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 30, 2005 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

He was an elder in the Alum Creek Assembly of God Church.

He is survived by his sisters, Sophia Hensley and Macel Roberts both of Sod, and Hazel Hughes of Alum Creek.

Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Danny McCormick officiating. Burial will be held in the Old Pine Grove Cemetery, McCorkle. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
