Martha Elizabeth Cooper, 69, of Charleston died Monday, March 8, 1999 at Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Montgomery, after a long illness.

She was an employee at the Ramada Inn in South Charleston for 13 years. She was a Baptist.

She is survived by her: Husband: James R. Cooper; 6 Daughters: Doris Jean Cooper of Cartersville, GA; Maxine Cooper of Dunkirt, IN; Sandra Cole of Cleveland, OH; Margaret Oxley of Charleston, WV; Carolyn Hall of Dunbar, W V; Eva Lou Cooper of Dunbar, WV; 1 Son: Terry Lee Cooper of Hurricane, WV; 1 Sister: Lucy Mae Cooper of Yawkey, WV; 24 Grandchildren; 21 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, March 11, 1999 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Bernard Cooper officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call on Wednesday, March 10, 1999 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her: 3 Daughters: Mary Jo Gray of St. Albans, WV; Carol “Cacky” Calvert of Simpsonville, SC; Shelly Sammons of South Charleston, WV; 6 Sons: Clarence “Dickie” Whitlock of Olcott, WV; Alan Whitlock of Simpsonville, SC; Terry Whitlock of Olcott, WV; Elwood Whitlock of Seebert, WV; Wayne Whitlock of St. Albans, WV; Mark Whitlock of Olcott, WV; 1 Brother: Truman Turley of Milton, WV; 2 Sisters: Debris Dee Elkens ofDelbarton, WV; Louise Shultz of Spring Hill, WV; 14 Grandchildren; 8 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Tuesday, March 9, 1999 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating. Entombment will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call on Monday, March 8, 1999 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Mary Simms Roberts, 84, of St. Albans, died Thursday, March 4, 1999 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She was a math teacher in Putnam and Kanawha counties, and a member ofthe W VEA. She received her masters from Moms Harvey and was a graduate of Marshall University, was a member of the Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, where she was a member of the Mary Gray Circle and BrittWomack Sunday school class.

She is survived by her: 2 Daughters: Jean Thomas of St. Albans, WV; Ruth Ellen Clement of Jacksonville, FL; 8 Grandchildren; 6 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, on Saturday, March 6, 1999 at 11:00 AM with Dr. LeRoy Kenney and Dr. Charles Hendricks officiating. Entombment will be held in the Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may call on Friday, March 5, 1999 from 2 to 4 PM and from 6 to 8 PM and one hour prior to the service at the church. Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, is in chazge of arrangements. The family suggests contributions to be made to the Highlawn Baptist Church building fund or Love Gift fund, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans, WV 25177.

HE WAS A MACHINIST IN THE NEWSPAPER BUSINESS AND WAS EMPLOYED WITH THE CHARLESTON NEWSPAPERS FOR 18 YEARS, WAS AN ARMY VETERAN AND HE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HIS FATHER, CREED B. WADE AND HIS BROTHER, STANLEY D. WADE.

HE WAS A HIGHLY DECORATED WWII ARMY VETERAN RECEIVING THE BRONZE STAR, TWO PURPLE HEARTS, ETO MEDAL WITH FIVE BATTLE STARS, ONE SILVER STAR AND WWII VICTORY MEDAL, GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL, MARKSMAN BADGE WITH RIFLE BAR, REVOLVER SHAPSHOOTER MEDAL. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE ALUM CREEK VFW POST #4768, A LIFE MEMBER OF THE D.A.V. AND THE MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART, A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION VETERANS OF THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE. DUE TO INJURIES RECEIVED IN WWII HE RECEIVED DISABILITY RETIREMENT AT AGE 50 FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WHERE HE WORKED AS A CLERK. HE ATTENDED GRACE BAPTIST TEMPLE IN ST ALBANS.
