David Paul Spurlock

David SpurlockDavid Paul “Bump” Spurlock, 64, of Griffithsville, entered into Glory peacefully from our hands to His at Hubbard Hospice House West, South Charleston on Sunday, August 28, 2016.

He was preceded in death by grandson: Asher Paul Spurlock, and parents: Gladys Marie & Kenner Paul Spurlock.

He often attended Yawkey Methodist church when he was able.  He served in the U.S. Air Force, and was a plant operations specialist 35 years for FMC, Olin then Clearon Chemical Companies.

David was an avid sports fanatic who loved playing, coaching and managing basketball teams from youth teams up thru semi-pro.  He was a 1969 graduate of Duval High School where he lettered in football and basketball and attended WV Tech, Montgomery.   He loved boating and fishing with his son and grandsons.  David was always found trying to help others in any way and would routinely put others’ needs before his own without a second thought.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law/caregiver, Jordan (Mindy) Spurlock, South Charleston, with whom he had made his home this past year.  Also survived by grandsons: Jakob Whitlock, Aaron Spurlock and their younger brother and sister; brother: Jeffrey Kern Spurlock, and Cindy Lowery a special friend who loved and cared for him the past several years and also a niece and two nephews and a host of lifetime friends made thru his involvement with athletics.

Services will be 11:00am, Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors Butch Loftis and Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00pm Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at the funeral home.

A special thanks to Terri Lovejoy for helping Mindy with David’s care the past year and also to the staff at Hospice House West for their tender care.

Jerry Lee Allen

Jerry Lee Allen, 50, of St. Albans, died August 24, 2016, at home.  He is survived by brother, Gary Allen Dunbar, WV.  A memorial service will be held in Steubenville, OH, at a later date.

James David Harless

James Harless jpgJames David Harless, 58, of Sod passed away suddenly Monday, August 22, 2016 at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston.

He was a mechanic for M. H. Equipment in Charleston.

David was preceded in death by his parents, James and Frances Harless; and brother, Terry Harless.

He is survived by daughters, Jessica Wood and Lindsey Harless; brother, Johnnie (Cindy) Harless; sisters, Brenda (Bobby) Baldwin, Deanna (Dick) Sammons and Shelia Richardson.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Jimmy Lawrence officiating.  Burial will follow at Harless Family Cemetery, Sod.   The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Gregory Scott Thompson

Thompson photoGregory Scott Thompson, 55, Belle, WV died Saturday, August 20, 2016 at CAMC-Memorial Divison, Charleston, WV.  He was born in Chicago, IL.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jackie & Jewell Thompson and brother, John Timothy Thompson.

He was a truck driver.  He is survived by his companion, Rosalee Thomas; son, Jason Scott Thompson; sisters, Diane (Carl) Doss and Sharon (Lynn) Goff from TN and Regina Charles; grandchildren, Sara and Jada Hudnall, who dearly loved their Pappy; and many nephews and nieces.

There will be no service.

Christopher Michael McVaney

Christopher McVaneyChristopher Michael McVaney, 41, of Alkol, WV, formerly of Arnoldsburg, delivered his final load and went home to be with his brother, A.J. Langford on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, in El Paso, Texas after a sudden illness.

He was an over the road chemical truck driver for Quality Carriers.

He is survived by his wife, Stacy; children, Kaitlyn, Shawn and Alexis; parents, James and  Dianna Langford; grandmother Doris Luzader; and special niece and nephew, Destiny and Little A.J..

Service will be 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek  with Pastor Ron Scott officiating.  Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Timothy Pauley

Timothy PauleyTimothy Pauley, 58, South Charleston went to be with the Lord Saturday August 13, 2016, at Hubbard Hospice West, South Charleston.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Lois Mallory Pauley and brother, Rodney.

He was employed by Pauley Masonry.

He is survived by father, Bill Pauley (Linda Anselment), sisters: Stephanie Lockhart and Sherry Pauley; brothers: Roger Mallory, Joe and Kevin Pauley and Tommy Joe Baker.

Services will be 2:00pm Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Holly Memorial Church with Rev. John Means officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Mallory-Dent Cemetery, Spring Hill Mountain.

 

 

Bonnie FulcherBonnie Lee McClung Fulcher, 89, of Charleston, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Quarry Manor in Charleston.

Mrs. Fulcher was a professional nurse graduating in  1965 from Morris Harvey College; and a 1975 graduate from University of North Carolina. Among the many positions held by Mrs. Fulcher were the Associate Professor of Nursing at WV Wesleyan College where she assisted the faculty in achieving accreditation from the American Nurse’s Association; while working at the  WV State Health Department she was coordinator of the services of 12 counties for 17 years; and also administered the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Program in W. Va.

She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Howard Fulcher, Sr., and son, Paul Howard Fulcher, Jr.

Mrs. Fulcher is survived by her daughter-in-law, Martha; granddaughters, Lauren, Megan and Ally; 1 brother and 4 sisters.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday August 7, 2016 at the Buckhorn Methodist Church Snowhill Road, Mt. Nebo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hilltop Methodist Church or Buckhorn Methodist Church building funds and will be received by Juanita Cavendish, Mt. Nebo, W. Va. 26679.

Lois C. Alford

Lois AlfordLois C. Alford, 80, of South Charleston went home to the Lord on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at Hospice West.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jess & Belle Mullins.

She was retired from the State of WV Dept of Finance Administration, a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church and later attended Bible Center Church.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Jack and daughter, Sandy Sayre, (Gary Hannoush); three grandchildren: Jason Sayre, (Heather), Jered Sayre, (Tiffany), and Jacqueline Powers, (Frankie Akers); six great-grandchildren: Gracie Powers, Jackson and Sophia Akers, Mason, Dillon and Amelia Sayre.

Graveside service will be 3:30pm Thursday, August 4th at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.  Visitation will be at 1:00 – 3:00pm Thursday at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

Barbara Ellen Good

Barbara GoodBarbara Ellen Good, 68, of Robson, WV, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at CAMC Memorial Division in Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kelly.

She is survived by her husband Harlon; daughters, Ann Vickers (Shannon McCormick), Lori (Tim) McCarty, and Kathy (Blaine) Davis; sisters, Betty David, Kay Browning & Marie Richmond; brothers, Doug and James Saddler; grandchildren, Melissa, Carrie, Andrew, Tiffany, Justin, Matthew, Eddie and Kassie; and 11 great grandchildren, Dalton, Gabriella, Isaiah, Megan, Sarah, Ashlynn, Nicholas, Hollie, Kalel, Leah and Luke.

Service will be noon Saturday, July 30, at Pine Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Saddler officiating.  Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco, WV.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church

 

Loretta CardwellLoretta June Dove Cardwell of South Charleston, West Virginia, and Springfield, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at Forest Glen Health Campus in Springfield.  She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 65 years, James Cardwell, Jr.; parents, Clyde Sherwood and Lura Martha Bridges Dove; brothers, Jesse, Dick, Harold, and Clyde Sherwood Dove; sister, Mary Beatrice Dove Brady; and grandson, Samuel Bridges Harshbarger.

June was born in Lerona, Mercer County, West Virginia, on January 29, 1923; graduated from Princeton High School; and worked for a brief time at the Maidenform Brassiere Company in Princeton.  She was a Kanawha County kindergarten aide at Ruthlawn Elementary for almost 15 years.

June was a member of Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene and First Church of the Nazarene of South Charleston.  She was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award; served on the church board and the missionary council; was a Sunday school teacher, a member of MiSMA, and an active member of Women’s Ministries.  June served God, her family, and her community on a daily basis.  She lived according to her convictions and was faithful.

June is survived by daughters Connie Snodgrass of Leesburg, Virginia; Beverly DeBord of Springfield, Ohio; Karen Teel and husband Brooks of South Charleston; Nancy Knurek and husband Chuck of South Charleston; Cathy McCue and husband David of Plano, Texas; and son David Cardwell and wife Laura of Abilene, Texas.  In addition, she is survived by grandchildren John Snodgrass, Elizabeth Snodgrass, Rodgers Harshbarger and wife Kate, Bryan Knurek and wife Holly, Charles DeBord and wife Amanda, Melissa Bucklew and husband Jacob, Allison Taylor, Katie Vaden and husband Ray, Chris Cardwell and wife Jami, and John Michael Harshbarger.  June and Jim were blessed with thirteen great grandchildren, namely Kennedy Knurek, Lucy Harshbarger, Katharine Snodgrass, Carlyn Vaden, Jillian Knurek, Samuel Harshbarger, Dominic Bucklew, McKenna Vaden, Joshua Vaden, Emmett Cardwell, Mia June Bucklew, Zoe Vaden, and Sawyer Cardwell.  She is also survived by her sister Ella Mae Wagner of Burlington, North Carolina; three sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends in West Virginia and Ohio.

The family extends its sincere appreciation to the staffs of SweetBriar Assisted Living of Dunbar, West Virginia, Forest Glen, and Kindred Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.

A service to honor June’s memory will be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with The Reverend Kent Estep officiating.  Visitation will begin at 10:30 with the service immediately following at noon.  A service of interment will be held at the Graceland Memorial Park mausoleum.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.  June successfully battled that disease for decades, never losing sight of her life’s real purpose.
