Cosby Jane Murphy, 81, South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday July 14, 2012, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.
As a direct descendant of the Hatfield family from Yeager, WV, Cosby graduated from West Virginia University in 1952. She moved to Charleston, WV in 1961. Cosby was a school teacher until 1972 when she received her master’s degree from WVU and began her career as a guidance counselor. She retired from Kanawha County Schools in 1988. For many years after her retirement she volunteered at the Kanawha Home for Children. She touched the lives of many children during her career.
She is survived by her two children, Michael and Derek Murphy, whom she lovingly raised as a single parent and Kimberly Hammack who caringly helped her for many years.
Graveside service will be 11:00am on Wednesday, July 18th at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston with Pastor Butch Leadman officiating. Curry Funeral Home at Alum Creek is in care of arrangements.
Your mother was a good friend of my mother, Janice Hively. They met through teaching, but Im not sure which high school. Clay or Elkview? After they no longer taught together, mom and I would occasionally visit Cosby. She was such a lady, beautiful, and kind.
Mom passed away four years ago, and I find myself thinking of her quite often. Such was the case the other day when your mother popped into my mind. It was so long ago since I last saw your mother, I’m surprised I could recall her name, but I did, and once I saw Cosby’s photo, so many memories came flooding back. She was a lovely person.
Im sorry for your loss.
Our deepest sympathy to Derek and Mike Murphy on the death of their mother, our dear friend Cosby. We will be unable to attend the services because Jim is recovering from hip replacement surgery. Cosby was a wonderful Christian woman and she will be very much missed. She is with her Lord now. Jim and Carolyn Kirk
The West Virginia and Kanawha County Associations of Retired School Employees extend their sincere sympathy to you, the family, in your sorrow. Blessings to all.
