Robert G. Lively, 52 of Alum Creek, died Friday, August 9, 2002 in CAMC Memorial Hospital Charleston, after a short illness.

Services will be Monday, August 12, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. David McClure officiating. Burial will be in Lively Cemetery, Sod. There will be no visitation.

Phyllis A. Hoffman, 63 of St. Albans, died Friday, August 9, 2002 in CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after a short illness.

She is survived by her: Daughter: Debbie Vance of St. Albans; 3 Sons: Thomas and Curtis Hoffinan of St. Albans; Rodney Hoffinan of Beckley; 1 Sister: Nina McCoy of Sod; 1 Brother: Vick Hughes of Charlotte, NC; 5 Grandchildren: Ashley, “Spike”, and Cole Vance, Donald Thomas and Scotty Layne Hoffrnan.

Services will be held Monday, August 12, 2002 at 2:00 PM at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle. Friends may call one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

James Kyle Childress

James Kyle Childress, Jr., 73, of Alum Creek, died Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at home after a long illness.

He was a retired excavator. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Johnson Childress.

He is survived by his four daughters, Dorothy Childress, Donna Childress, and Darlena Clark and husband, Jimmy, all of Alum Creek and Debra Wymer and husband, Dennis, of Nitro; one sister, Nancy Childress of Alum Creek, three grandchidren, Ashley Lewis and husband, Russell, Michael Wymer and Tiffany Wymer; two great grandchildren, Morgan Lewis and Matthew Lewis.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, August 8, 2002 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call on Wednesday, August 7, 2002 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Cecil Sheldon Roberts

Cecil Sheldon Roberts, 85, of Alkol, WV died August 4, 2002, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born on January 22,1917 at Garretts Bend, WV. He was the son of the late Calvin Roberts and Birdie Ann (Wheeler) Roberts. He was preceded in death by his wife, Junetta and his son, Teddy Roberts.

He is survived by his two sons, Calvin and Sheldon, both of Alkol and his eight daughters, Lavon Clark of Alkol, Violet Lovejoy of Elloree, SC, Roberta Selby of Littlestown, PA, Leoda Criss of Jarrettsville, MD, Awanda Knopp of Jarrettsville, MD, Bazbaza Preston of Phoenix, MD, Shirley Foster of Hampstead, MD, and Joetta Nelson of Hampstead, MD. He has 21 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He also has one sister, Macil Weeks of Ridgeview, W V and a half brother, Bill Roberts of Atwater, CA.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV on Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at 11:00 AM with (Dr.) Pastor Garry Bowman officiating. Final resting place will be Roberts Cemetery, Brushy Fork, Alkol, W V. The pallbearers will be Scott Clark, Timmy Criss, John, Jamie, Jimmy, and Barry Roberts. Friends may call on Monday, August 5, 2002 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Hyland J. Purdy, 82, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, August 1, 2002 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

He was a retired foreman for Union Carbide, a member of Mountain Mission, Charleston, where he served as a choir member. He was preceded in death by his wife & childhood sweetheart, Mary. He was also preceded in death by great granddaughter, Danielle Curtis. He was an Army veteran of WWII.

He is survived by: 3 Daughters: Patsy Hesse of South Charleston, WV; Judy Cales of South Chazleston, WV; Violetta McCormick of Sod, WV; 1 Sister: Celia Saul of Sod, WV; 11 Grandchildren: Jimmy Bias, Deborah Means, Mary Stewart, Jefferson Childress, Jackie Caruthers, Dorothy Pellegrino, Sarah Ramsey, Glen Joseph McCormick, Jr., Grant Jeffery McCormick, Judy Michelle McCormick, Gregory Jonathan McCormick; 22 Great Grandchildren; Special Niece: Sue Priestly Special Friends:  Delano Burton & Pete Bostic.

Service will be 2:00 pm Sunday, August 4, 2002, at Mountain Mission, 1620-7th Ave., Charleston, with Pastor Farley McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek with Military Graveside Rites by Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 of Alum Creek. Friends may call Saturday, August 3, 2002 from 6 to 8 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

He was retired from Columbia Gas, a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church, and was a Nary veteran of WWII.

He is survived by his: 1 Daughter: Debbie Hanson of South Charleston, WV; 1 Granddaughter: Angie Diehl; 2 Great Granddaughters: Taylor and Natalee Diehl;

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Dennis Barnhart officiating. Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

She was a homemaker and member of Trinity Baptist Church, St. Albans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mirrell Clark and son, William “Bill” Clark.
