John L. Carvill, 87 of Charleston, died Wednesday, October 24, 2001 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

He was retired from Frankenburgers Department Store. He was an Army Veteran of WW II.

He is survived by: Son: John Carvill, Jr., of St. Albans, WV Daughter: Patricia Sansom of Cookeville, TN 3 Grandchildren: Rebecca Carvill, Jason & Adam Fleck; 1 Great Grandson: Cory Carvill.

Services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, October 26, 2001 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. Burial will be in French Cemetery, Charleston. Friends may call Thursday, October 25, 2001 from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Phoeba Myrtle Armstrong

Phoeba Myrtle Armstrong, 73 of Sandyville, died Sunday, October 21, 2001 at Jackson General Hospital, after a long illness.

She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her son, James Armstrong.

She is survived by her: Husband: Carson; 6 Daughters: Margaret Scazbeny; Rachel Pauley; Barbara Banks; Charlene Smith; Kathy Smith; Sheila Cooper;
23 Grandchildren; 15 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday, October 23, 2001 at 1:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. Shawn Pauley officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, McCorkle. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Gatha Quentin Burchett, Jr.

Gatha Quentin Burchett, Jr., 52 of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of St. Albans, died Sunday, October 14, 2001 at home after a long illness.

He was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways, was a graduate of Shepherd College and received his MBA from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. He was also a member of Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans.

He is survived by his Mother: Reta Burchett of Loveland, OH; 2 Sisters and Brother-in-law: Lola Burchett, Ellen and Terry Taylor all of Loveland, OH.

Services will be held at the Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, on Thursday, October 18, 2001 at 11:00 AM with Dr. Leroy Keeney and Rev. C. T. Bullington officiating. Graveside services will beat 3:30 PM at Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge, Virginia. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Emmitt “Pete” Breedlove

Emmitt “Pete” Breedlove, 77 of Yawkey, Lincoln County, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2001 at Boone Memorial Hospital, Madison, after an extended illness.

He was retired from Union Carbide Construction with 27 years service. He was an Army Veteran of WWII, was a member of the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge # 71 and a member of the Bennie Padilla VFW Post # 4768 Alum Creek.

He is survived by his: Wife: Wilda Weaver Breedlove; Daughter: Margaret Poling of Spring Hill, WV; 2 Sons: Emmitt W. and Steven Breedlove of Yawkey, WV; 2 Sisters: Christine Mathes and Kathleen Hart of Girard, OH; 2 Grandsons: Joshua and Cody Breedlove of Yawkey, WV.

Services will be conducted Wednesday, October 17, 2001 at 1:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites will be held at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

W. Sherman Holstein

W. Sherman Holstein, 84, of Alum Creek died Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at home after a long illness.

He was a member of Emmons Freewill Church, a retired coal miner and a lifetime member of UMWA. He was preceded in death by his wife Bertha A. Holstein.

He is survived by: 7 Daughters: Ozean Barker of Emmons, WV; Arlene Dunlap of Olcott, WV; Linda Hunt of South Charleston, WV; Sharon Wentz of South Charleston, WV; Fran Mathena of St. Albans, WV; Marylin Gillispie of Beckley, WV; Connie Sprague of Chazleston, WV; 4 Sons: William S. Holstein, Jr., of Emmons, WV; John Holstein of South Charleston, WV; Alton Holstein of Emmons, WV; Mike Holstein of Emmons, WV; 1 Brother: Gilbert Holstein of Charleston, WV; 1 Sister: Nellie Armstrong of Marmet, WV; 24 Grandchildren; 24 Great Grandchildren; 1 Great, Great Grandchild.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 11:00 AM with Rev. F. A. Giles officiating. Burial will be held in Holstein Family Cemetery, Dartmont. Friends may call on Friday, October 12, 2001 from 6 to 8 PM.

William Gene “Bill” Clark, 63 of Milton, died Monday, October 8, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, after a seven-year battle with cancer.

He was a 1956 graduate of Duval High School, an U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Local #669 of the Automatic Sprinkler Industry. He was a Christian.

He was preceded in death by his father, Mirrell Clark and grandparents, Lessie and Everett Miller and Mattie and William Clark.

He is survived by: Daughter: Cheyenne of Pinellas Park, FL; Son: Bill of Huntington; Mother: Hallene Clark of St. Albans; Sister and Brother-in-law: Janice and Harold Stowers of Winfield; Sisters: Judy Hale of St. Albans; Mary McGrew of Scott Depot; Brother and Sister-in-law: Larry and Linda Clark of Scott Depot; Caregiver: Mary Kestner.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, October 11, 2001 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Jackie Clark and Pastor Alan Stewart officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Charles E. McCormick

Charles E. McCormick, 61 of Sod, died Sunday, October 7, 2001 at home after a long illness.

He was born and raised at Woodville. He formerly worked for Ford Motor Co. in Cleveland, Ohio.

He is survived by: Wife: Nancy; 1 Son: Homer McCormick of Cleveland, OH; 1 Daughter: Cindy McCormick of Cleveland, OH; 2 Brothers: Earl McCormick of Ripley, WV; Vernard McCormick of Sod, WV; 2 Sisters: Pearl Hazless of Beckley, WV; Sue Pauley of South Charleston, WV; 6 Grandsons.

At his request, the body has been cremated. There will not be any services. Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, is in care of the arrangements.

Mary Carrier Haynes

Mary Carrier Haynes, 71, of South Charleston, died October 5, 2001 at her home following a long illness. She was born March 17, 1930, at Trace Fork, to the late Dana and Anna Carrier Pauley.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Haynes.

She is survived by: 1 Daughter and Son-in-law: Kimberly Walker and her husband Stephen Walker; The joys of her life: Grandson: J. Logan Walker Granddaughter: Patricia E. Walker; Sisters: Faye Moss of South Charleston, WV Phyllis Boardman of South Charleston, WV; 2 Brothers: Ralph and Gene Pauley both of South Charleston, WV.

She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She was a member of Trinity Independent Baptist Church and the Kanawha Trail Club.
In accordance with Mary’s wishes the body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2001, at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Gene Pauley officiating. Interment will be at the Pauley family cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Mary’s memory to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar, WV 25064.

Dallas Miller

He is a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

John A. Matthews, 84 of Sod, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 20, 2001 at home after a long illness.

He was retired from F.M.C. in South Charleston with 38 years of service. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church for 56 years where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a WWII Navy veteran decorated for bravery and was preceded in death by his grandson, Bill Huffman.

He is survived by his: Wife: Artena McCallister Matthews; 1 Daughter: Sue Huffman of Sod, WV; 1 Son: John D. Matthews of Alum Creek, WV; 2 Sisters: Garnet Vickers of Alkol, WV; Wynoka Kelley of Yawkey, WV; 3 Grandchildren: Tina Humphries, Jonathan and Michelle Matthews; 2 Great Grandchildren: Elijah Huffman and Hayley Humphries.

Services will beheld at Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Sod, on Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Phil Suiter officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 7 to 9 PM and on Saturday one hour prior to the service.
