Phyllis Jean Garnes

phyllis-garnesPhyllis Jean Garnes, 82, of Alum Creek went home to be reunited with her family Monday, January 9, 2017.

She was a graduate of W. Va. State College and retired from the Social Security Administration.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace W. and Edith Carper Dotson; daughter, Donna Jean Turner; sister and brother inlaw, Betty and Pete Stump, and sister, Rita Woodall.

She is survived by her son, Ronnie Chambers;  daughters, Debra (Rex) Hill and Deirdra Turner; sisters, Patricia (Louis) Anderson; Paula Hackworth and Bonnie Adkins; six grandchildren and several great grandchildren; and her faithful friend and beloved dog, Emily.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jennings “Ray” Williams

jennings-williams-2Jennings “Ray” Williams, 71, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston.

He was a retired truckdriver and a member of Olcott Community Church.  The joy of his life was serving God, grandchildren and his 2 pug dogs.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Martha Faith Williams; sisters, Joann Holstein and Garnet May; and brother, Junior Williams.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Regina; sons, Steve (Julie) Williams and David (Lisa) Williams; grandchildren, Tylor, Tanner, Raygan and Rylee Williams and Cody Thompson; great granddaughter, Addyson Thompson; brothers, Jerry (Connie), Bill (Nell), Roy, John (Brenda) and Ricky (Jackie) Williams; and sisters, Kat (Bob) Pennington and Sue (Leonard) Gibson; and other family members and friends.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Audie Murphy, Sr.  officiating.  Burial will follow at Holstein Cemetery, Dartmont.   The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Thomas Memorial Hospital and Hubbard Hospice House West for their care and compassion.  Also to all the family and friends that gave so much help and support during his illness.

Charles Eugene Kidd

charles-kidd-jpg-2Charles Eugene Kidd, 80, of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Hubbard Hospice West in South Charleston.

He was a member of the first graduating class of Duval High School at Griffithsville in 1954.  Charles worked as a foreman for Vic Green Construction; he was a pipefitter at FMC; and a roofer and sheetmetal worker at Kanawha County Schools.   He also had his own concrete business on the side.

Charles was a member of Ruth Community Church where he recently accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Annie Kidd, five sisters and one great grandson.

Charles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary; sons, Charles (Julia) Kidd and Anthony (Betty) Kidd; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Charles A. Kidd officiating.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV  25387-2536.

Carmen Julia Means

Carmen Julia Means, 74, died Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Tanya Means in Charleston.

She is survived by her daughters, Tanya Means, Katherine Means & Jessica Kyle; son, Kenneth Harvey; and husband, Sgt. Major Joe Means.

Graveside services will be 12:00 noon on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Orchard Hills Memory  Gardens, Yawkey, with Pastor Gary Hill officiating.

 

Lyle Gene Elkins

Lyle Eugene “Gene” Elkins, 72, of Charleston went home on Christmas Day, December 25, 2016.   He was formerly of Sod, WV.

He is survived by his significant other, Donald G. Browning; sons, David Elkins of North Carolina and Tom Tom Elkins; daughter, Delores Jean Elkins of Ironton, Ohio; and sisters, Joyce Stanton and Linda Clark.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Marcelene Janet Adams

Marcelene Janet Adams, 78 of Sod, was born May 11, 1938 and died December 24, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Quincy Tony Adams, U.S. Army retired; her parents, Clayton and Lyda Justice; brothers, Arvil, Kelva, Ernest and Eugene.

Janet  is survived by her son, David Adams of Springfield, Missouri; brothers, Glen Justice and Kyle Justice of MacCorkle, West Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Janet was a 1956 graduate of Duval High School. In the spring of 1961 she was introduced to her future husband, a career U.S. Army gentleman. They were married October 15, 1961 at Calvary Baptist Church in Charleston. That was the beginning of a wonderful life together. In  May 1979 they moved to Sod. Janet was employed by the Kanawha County Public Library for 21 years.

Service will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, December 28, 2016  at Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church Sod. Burial will follow at the Lively Cemetery, Sod. Family and friends will gather at the church one hour prior to the service.

Shirley Faye Brown

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and sons, Rick and David Samples.

She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly (Wayne) Kidd; sister, Phyllis Holt; “Red-headed” stepdaughter, Debbi Hale; special friend, Kathy Smith and “adopted” grandson, Kevin Clendenin.

A graveside service will be 3:00 PM Saturday, December 31, 2016  at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, St. Albans.

David W. “Fuzzy” Craddock

david-craddock-photoDavid W. “Fuzzy” Craddock, 64, of Hewitt, was saved November 30th and went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at the home of his brother and caregiver, Dennis Craddock.

He was a buggy operator in the coal mines.  Fuzzy loved working on CB Radios and he attended Spruce Laurel Church.

He is also survived by his daughters, Tracy Craddock and Tiffany Ward; and sister, Beverly (Ralph) Caudill.

Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 23, 2016  at Epling Cemetery, Hewett with Pastor Ralph Caudill officiating.

Elwood Edgel Dunlap

Elwood Edgel Dunlap of Alum Creek passed away on his 89th birthday.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra J. and Bessie Lee Dunlap.

A private burial was held Friday, December 16, 2016 at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco.

 

Dessie C. Lovejoy

She was a longtime member of Summit Community Church, and was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend.

Dessie was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Duckie Hughes and brother, Michael Hughes.

She will be greatly missed by her husband and best friend of 49 years, Thurman Lovejoy, who adored her; children, Lavonna Lacy, JoAnn (Mark) Kessinger and Robert (Susan) Lovejoy; special niece, Sondra Clark and special nephew, Russell (Deah) Allen who loved her dearly; siblings, Freda Crocket, Gloria Pauley, George (Sharon) Hughes and Danny (Teresa) Hughes; grandchildren, Chris and Raven Lacy, Bailee Kessinger, Avery Lovejoy, Nikki (Andrew) Linville, Hailey (Tyler) Bunting, Cassi, Tori and Maci Allen; great grandchildren, Carter and Alexis Linville, Raelyn and Rylee Bunting and Isaac Jones who were the joy of her life. Also a host of friends and loved ones who will deeply miss her.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Dwight McClure, Chuck Adkins and Aaron Graley officiating.  Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod.   The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
