Bruce Leighton Harless, 67, of South Charleston passed away at Charleston Area Medical Center on Monday, May 21, 2018.

He was a 44 year member of the UMWA.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Leighton R. and Virginia Gullian Harless; brother, Rick Harless; and nephews, Phillip and Mark Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Deborah; son, Jonathan (Helen) Harless of Palm City, FL, daughter, Lindsay (Michael) Flowers of GA; sisters, Mary (Art) Smith of OH and Nora Harless (Lee) Gillespie of NC; brothers, William (Becky)Harless of AZ, Robert (Anissa) Harless of South Charleston, WV; four grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends; and fur babies, Chopper and Bandit, who he loved very much.

A private family graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at Forks of Coal Memorial Park in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to the Kanawha County Animal Shelter, 1248 Greenbrier Street, Charleston, WV 25311.

 

Barry Gordon Monday

Barry Gordon Monday, 76, of Tango, WV, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, May 19, 2018.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ike Monday and Manoka Adams Lynn, grandparents, John Calvin and Mattie Adams, half-brother, James Lynn and an aunt who cared for him, Anna Wade.

He is survived by his half-brother, John Lynn, uncle, Chester Adams and several cousins.  He was a member of the Griffithsville Church of Christ.

Service will be 2:00pm Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Minister Kim Matthews officiating.  Burial will follow at the Powell Cemetery, Hamlin.  Visitation for friends and family is one hour prior to the service.

 

David Rogers “R.C. Dave” Pauley, born on August 16, 1940 in South Charleston, entered into the arms of the Lord on Friday, May 11, 2018 at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long illness.

He was a member of the Southridge Freewill Baptist Church.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend to all who knew him. For 37 years, he was a driver for RC Bottling and a proud member of the Teamsters. He worked with his family on their dairy farm while growing up, often reminiscing about family and friends who came to visit. Many colorful stories and tall tales have been spun from these escapades, especially while sitting on his front porch and entertaining. David was an enthusiastic gardener who grew enough tomatoes for the whole neighborhood. He was also an avid outdoorsman and a WVU football fan, never missing a game on Saturdays.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Minnie Madora Eskins Pauley; sister, Ada Mae Greene; brother and sister-in-law, Paul R. and Grace Pauley; and sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Johnny Holstein.

He is survived by his loving spouse of 47 years, Barbara Ann (Shafer); daughter, Linda Gayle and son-in-law, Rusty Massey of Big Chimney; brothers, Jim (Betty Jo) and Bill (Karen); sisters, Diane (Ronnie) Cox and Lena Greene; brother-in-law, Earl Greene; close friends, Al and Shelley Newman and James MacCallister; and hunting pal, Bob Oxley all of South Charleston; granddaughters, Kristen Nicole, Kayla Marie and Sydney Marie Massey; adopted grandchildren, Lisa, Steve and Kaleb Dedrick and Cody Steed all of North Carolina, and Brittany Rule of Poca; and buddies, Yeller the Cat and Hoppy the Crow. David also had a host of family and friends, all of which he was very fond.

The family would like to thank everyone that came to be with David during his final days and to also thank the staff on 3S at CAMC Memorial, as well as, the staff of Hubbard Hospice House for the wonderful care and compassion that was shown to David and our family.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the Southridge Freewill Baptist Church, 814 Ruthdale Road, Charleston with close friends, Reverend Dean Chambers and Pastor David Cooper officiating. His place of burial will be Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2018 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek.

Norma Jean Dunlap

Norma Jean Dunlap, 88, of Alum Creek, WV, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Sod where she was very active in teaching and working with the youth.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Marcel; son, Scotty; parents, Charles and Anna Clark Brown; and siblings, Leroy, Eugene “Pete”, Earl, John “Bucky” and Clinton Brown and Nina Hensley.

She is survived by her children Jimmy (Diana), Roger (Clara), Richard (Margaret), and Lisa Dunlap, Betty Bragg (Dale Stewart), Sandy (Ledford) Turley and Donna (Arthur) Wilson; 16 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, May 14, at Lively Cemetery in Sod with Pastor Bub Anderson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Curry Funeral Home for the funeral service.

 

Allen D. Jones

Allen D. Jones, 67, of St. Albans, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 5, 2018, after a long battle with Alzheimers.

He retired from UPS Freight with 32 years of service.  He was a 1969 graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.  Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin L. & Helen L. Jones.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Linda Jones, daughter, Jamie A. Hall and son, James R. (Amy) Adkins, grandchildren, J.W. and Colton Adkins, Ryan Hall, Lyndee and Bailee Adkins-Riffle, sisters, Sandra (Ted) Lanham, Cathy (David) Jones, Marcia (Dwain) Smith, and special friends since childhood, Francis Rectenwald, Ebbie Mitchell and Larry Lawson.  Special thanks to HospiceCare, especially Stacy Jarrett, Melinda Boggess, and Brittany Grant.

Service will be 1:00pm Wednesday, May 9th at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastors Homer Hensley, Mark Ruby & Jeff Mosteller officiating.  Burial will follow at the Hayzlett Cemetery, Garretts Bend.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Wesley “Wess” Stan Anderson, 71, of Brounland Road, Alum Creek, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Hubbard Hospice – West, South Charleston. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley & Kathleen Anderson.

He was a carpenter and painter and served in the U.S. Marine Corp.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy, daughters, Tammy Kay Anderson of South Charleston and Claudia McCallister of Dunbar; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one on the way, brother, Gary Anderson of Florida and sisters, Sharon Hanks of Florida, and Barbara Wills of Beckley.

The service will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made toward funeral expenses.

 

Maxine Marlene Davis

Maxine Marlene Davis, 63, of Hurricane, WV went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Helen Bays Lewis.

Maxine is survived by her husband of 45 years, Dale; daughter, Contessa Davis; grandchildren, whom she adored, Ariel (Christopher) Strong, Alena and Addyson Raines; great granddaughter, Anastasia Strong; brother, Duane Lewis; and sisters, Rebecca (Mike) Duffy and Sherri (Patrick) Lunsford.

Joann Thomas

Joann Thomas of McCorkle, WV departed her earthly dwelling to be with the Lord on Monday, April 30, 2018. She was a patient at Hubbard Hospice House. She was born at McCorkle on May 10, 1920 and would have been 98 at her birthday.

Joann was the daughter of the late John Henry and Laurette Smith Armstrong. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Oscar Thomas; four brothers and their wives, Callie (Delia), Foster (Nellie), Harvey (Vercie), and Jackson; four sisters and their husbands, Reva (George) Atkins, Geneva, Lula (Art) Talada and Fancy (Fred) Dunlap; and by four sons-in-law.

The Lord blessed her with 97 wonderful years.  Joann and Oscar  were long time faithful servants of the Lord at McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church. She was a strong and compassionate woman and served her community by aiding and transporting friends and neighbors in need. Joann worked for the Department of Human Services making a home for mentally challenged ladies until she was nearly 90 years old. She had a heart for service.
She was loved and respected by all who knew her and was thought of as a Godly woman. Joann loved spending time in past years outdoors gardening, camping, and fishing. She was an amazing homemaker and a wonderful cook. She was well known for all of her canned goods.

Joann leaves behind seven children to cherish and honor her memory Madeline (James) Roberts, Ethel (Elzie) Miller, Lorraine (Paul) Smith-Jones, Lowell Jim (Sharon) Thomas, Evelyn (Eugene) Ball, Ella (John) Hensley and Barbara (David) McCallister. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 18 great great grandchildren. She adored her family and the grandchildren who were the light of her life.

Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, at McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church, Sod, with Pastors Isaiah Hatfield and Bub Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Thomas Family Cemetery in Sumerco.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in Joann’s memory be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25387.

 

Eric Franklin Hughes

Eric Franklin Hughes, 41, of Charleston went home Tuesday, April 17, 2018.

He loved the car sales business working all over the Kanawha Valley area never meeting a stranger. Eric served in the Air Force.  He also wrote poetry, loved music but most of all loved his family.

Eric was preceded in death by his grandparents, Garnith and Margaret Hughes of Eli Road, Sod.

Eric is survived by his children, Damian of Fairmont, Malia and Carter both of Alum Creek; mother, Susan Hughes (Jean Long) of Pt. Pleasant; father, Frankie Sexton of St. Albans; favorite aunt, Sharon (Jim) Oldaker of Alum Creek; brothers, Jeremy (Tabytha) of Wickliffe, OH and Christopher (Tiffany) of Nitro, WV; nieces Skyler, Jojo, Ahja and Emma; nephews, Aiden and Liam; several aunts and uncles, Rick, Teresa, Scott, Tammy and Rosie; and a host of friends and other family.

A memorial service will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Orchard Hills Memory Garden, Yawkey.

Friends may gather one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations be made to the funeral home.
