James Anthony (Jamey) Dunlap

James Anthony (Jamey) Dunlap, 45, of Charleston, formerly of Sod, WV, went to his Heavenly Home on July 24, 2020 after a long illness.

Jamey was born November 18, 1974 to the late Shirley K. Dunlap and Royce Dunlap both from Sod, WV. 

He was a 1994 graduate of Duval High School.

James was preceded in death by his brother Norris Glen Dunlap.

Jamey is survived by his fiancée Holly Smith; children James Norris and Shirley Ann Dunlap of Charleston, WV, whom he loved very much; ex-wife Tricia Meeks of N. C. and children Taylor Carlson and Savon Meeks of South Charleston, WV; and stepfather Melvin Bo Dunlap of Sod, WV; brothers Scotty (Pam) Dunlap of Charleston, WV, Ted (Barbara) Dunlap of Sod, WV,  and Kevin (Stephanie) Dunlap of Alum Creek, WV; sisters Cassy (Larry) Miller of Sumerco, WV, and Lisa (Bill) Dunlap of Charleston, WV; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express a “special thanks” to Uncle Randall Butch Brogan of Sod, WV.  

A Celebration of Life for Jamey will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 4, 2020 at Alum Creek Lion’s Club Community Center in Alum Creek, WV.  Please refer to www.curryfuneralhome.org and Facebook for the date and time of service.   

Rhoda Ann Adkins

Rhoda Ann Adkins, 79, of South Charleston, WV, went home Saturday, July 25, 2020.

She was a quiet but strong lady with an unwavering love for her family, especially her sons and grandchildren. Seeing them happy and successful was one of her greatest joys.

Rhoda was predeceased by husband Denver Adkins; son William A. Bell; parents Carl and Effie Graley; siblings Maxine Carpenter, James Graley,  Hassel Graley, Patty Dunlap and Kay Graley.

She is survived by son Jerry (Kim) Bell of South Charleston; sisters Delores Chauncey, Dovie Smith and Sharon Graley; grandson’s Trevor Bell, and Dustin Adkins; granddaughter Jordan Bell. 

A graveside service will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, August 3, at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens in Cross Lanes with Pastor Joey Scarberry officiating. 

Melvin Ray Turley

Melvin Ray Turley, 84, formerly of Alum Creek, WV, went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 20, 2020 at Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster, PA, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Melvin was predeceased by his wife, Betty, his parents, Myrtle and Jesse Turley and one grandchild. 

He is survived by his son, Kevin, of Deep Gap, NC, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

When in Charleston, Melvin was a long-time member of Bible Center Church.  He retired from Bearings Incorporated after many years of service.

In 2014, Melvin and Betty moved to Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster where he enjoyed their time together before he entered healthcare.

A graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2020 with Pastor Lee Walker officiating at Forks of Coal Cemetery in Alum Creek.    

Henry Avender Blake

Henry Avender Blake, 88, of Charleston, WV, went home Thursday, July 16, 2020.

He retired from One Valley Bank in Charleston as an Operations Manager.

Avender was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Childress Blake; parents, Henry and Alice Pauley Blake; and brother, Bernard Blake.

He is survived by son, Mike Blake (Evelyn); daughter Cindy Lewis (Mike); grandchildren, Lori Cummings and Ryan Blake; great grandchildren, Austin Blake and Alriah Flores.

A graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 20, at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating.

Julia Ann Roberts

Julia Ann Roberts, 70, of St. Albans, formerly of Brushy Fork, WV, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, July 16, 2020, at Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation in St. Albans.

She was a member of the Sumerco Church of God.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Lucy Roberts; brother, Harley Roberts; and sisters, Louise Byrd, Maggie Abbott, and Bell Hayes.

She is survived by sisters, Mable Waits, Rose (Forrest) Johnston, and Becky (Walter) Cook; brothers, Orville “Buster” (Norma) Roberts, Harry (Phyllis) Roberts, Robert (Nora) Roberts and Arthur (Mary) Roberts; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 20, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating.  Burial will follow at Roberts Cemetery, Alkol.   The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. 

Johnnie Franklin Chandler

Johnnie Franklin Chandler, 47 of Alum Creek, passed away on Thursday July 16, 2020 at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

He was born on July 25, 1972 to the late Johnnie and Deborah Eskew Chandler.  He was also preceded in death by his son, Colton Chandler.

Johnnie is survived by his children, Johnathon Chandler, Chloe Chandler, Savanna Blevins, Matthew Chandler, Madison Chandler, and Jenna Kennedy; grandchildren, Maylie Chandler, Oaklyn Hall, Grayson Chandler, Skylar Blevins, and Dawson Blevins; he is also survived by his sister, Becky Lilly (Todd Mosteller), nephew, Jeffrey Lilly and niece Alicen Mosteller.

In keeping with Johnnies wishes there will be no services, he will be laid to rest with his parents at the Chandler Family Cemetery at the homeplace.

Kenneth Bradley Vanhoose

Kenneth Bradley Vanhoose, 61, of Charleston, WV, was born August 27, 1958, the third child and first son of the union of James and Wanda (Bailey) Vanhoose, completed his earthly journey Friday, July 10, 2020 at Genesis Valley Center on Lincoln Drive.

He was a high school athlete participating in football and track.  Brad played Little League Baseball and church league basketball.

He started his career as a painter for W.Q. Waters and went on to establish his own company, Carolina Service Group in Anderson, SC.  Later he merged as a partner with Industrial Specialities LLC, which he operated until Alzheimer’s impacted his life.

Brad has three children from two marriages, Lanique of Phoenix, AZ, Grant Vanhoose of Piedmont, SC, and Taylor Brockman of Anderson, SC.  He also leaves to share memories six grandchildren, Jasmin and Shereef Younis of San Hose, CA, Toren and Teal Brockman of Anderson, SC, James and Rett Vanhoose of Piedmont, SC.  He dearly loved his visits with all of them.  Brad is also survived by his brother, Steve Vanhoose; and sisters, Deborah Vanhoose and Susan (Bart) Haynes.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Kent Estep officiating and friend Alan Mendeloff also sharing. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

We wish to thank the staff of Genesis-Valley Center for their love, care and support extended to Brad during his declining years.

Jeffrey Christopher Darnell

Jeffrey Christopher Darnell, 63, of Griffithsville, WV, was born April 27, 1957 and passed away July 9, 2020 at CAMC Memorial after a short illness.

Jeff was employed at Parco/Trojan Steel in Charleston for 29 years as a Fabricator.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Delores Ramey Darnell.

He is survived by Mary; daughter, Kristen (Bruce) Searls; brothers, David, Steve (Joni) and Ronnie (Lynette); father, William “Bill” Darnell; grandson, Gaige; several nieces and one nephew.

In keeping with his wishes, Jeff will be cremated and there will be no service.

Deborah Jean “Deb” “Granny” Reed

Deborah Jean “Deb” “Granny” Reed, 67, of Julian, WV, went to see her Jesus Thursday, July 9, 2020 at home after a long illness.

Deb was a Pentecostal by faith, loved church, reading and traveling. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carlos David and Joan Marilyn Eans Gadd; brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Laura Sawyer.

Deb is survived by her children, Al Scott of Jefferson, Ohio, Tammy Holstein (Calvin) of Julian and Patricia Allen (Bige) of Mantua, Ohio.   She is “Granny” to Lindsey, Alyssa, Joanna, Joshua, Amanda, Timmy Barker, Derrick Pritt and Nathan Allen; nine great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

She is also survived by her biological father, Isaac Ben Reed and numerous nieces and nephews.

In keeping with her wishes, Deb was cremated and there will be no services. 

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dignity Hospice for the wonderful care given to Deb.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dignity Hospice, 557 Main Street, Chapmanville, WV 25508.

Betty Carol (Dunlap) Webb

Betty Carol (Dunlap) Webb went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 after a long illness.  She is preceded in death by her husband, R.J. “Junior” Webb, son, Tommy Webb, parents, Robert & Ethel Dunlap, sisters, Ruth Griffith, Glenda Roberts and Marcella Dunlap, brothers, James, Dennis and Delbert Dunlap, and special nieces, Sharon Wilson and Debbie Holstein.

She is survived by her son, Ronnie (Karen) Webb, daughters, Kama (John) McGhee, and Angie (Paul) Webb Thomas, grandchildren, Jonathan and Kristy McGhee, Jason (Beth), Samantha and Addison Webb and Ian Thomas.  She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Zachery, Jackson and Madeline Webb, daughter-in-law, Darla Webb and many of her family and friends.

Betty was a faithful member of Loudendale Freewill Baptist Church for more than 40 years, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School.  She worked as a homemaker and as an  administrative secretary with her husband’s business, American Tree Expert Company. 

Betty was the sweetest, most loving and easy going person you would ever meet.  She loved the Lord and loved going to church.  We will miss her so much but will see her again someday. 

Service will be 3:00pm Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Loudendale Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Larry Young officiating.  Burial will follow at the Comer Cemetery at Loudendale.

Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

We would like to thank HospiceCare, especially Nikki, Jennifer and Mollie and also a special thanks to our private nurse, Wendy Winter that took excellent care of our Mom.

Due to Covid-19 Pandemic and for the safety and concern for everyone, please wear proper facial coverings and observe social distancing.  There will be facemasks and hand sanitizer made available.
