Decker K. Elder

Decker K. Elder, 87, of South Charleston, WV died Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at home.

She was born November 1, 1934, near Romney, WV and was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Elder, her parents, Nellie and William Kuykendall, and her brother, Mike Kuykendall. She is survived by sisters, Edith Kuykendall Crane of Mount Pleasants, South Carolina and Mary Kuykendall Weber of Middle Grove, New York, and four nieces.

Decker attended a 2-room grade school, passed the diploma test, and was graduated from Romney High School as valedictorian in 1952. She was graduated from West Virginia University in Morgantown in 1956 with a major in chemistry and a minor in math. During her school years, she worked on a sugar corn farm, as a waitress in a restaurant and a hotel, in a fruit packing shed, and two summers at Union Carbide in a laboratory. After finishing school, she joined Union Carbide Corporation in South Charleston, WV where she met her future husband. She worked in Research and Development at the Technical Center for most of her career in analytical and process development and spent the last two years in production at the South Charleston plant. She and her husband worked in Ponce, Puerto Rico for Union Carbide for a year and a half. In 1986, she retired and then worked part time until 1994 at Carbide. After retirement, she became a volunteer tutor for students and friends in math and chemistry which she enjoyed very much. She liked gardening, mowing grass, and anything to be done outside.

At her request, there will be no services and her ashes will join her husband’s ashes in the hay field and woods where they lived for many happy years.

Rebecca Kay Fulks

Rebecca Kay Fulks, 80, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Monday, August 15, 2022, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Kay was a member of Independent Missionary Baptist Church of Alum Creek and a 1960 graduate of Charleston High School. She was a former employee of RCA in Spring Hill and retired from Kay, Casto, & Chaney Law Firm with 28 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Fulks; parents, James and Kathleen Baber Arnold; and brother, Robert Arnold.

Kay is survived by her son, Mark (Amy) Fulks; grandchildren, Noah Fulks, Kelsi (Ethan) Glover; brother, Jim (Kathy) Arnold; special “sistas”, Diane Krause and Eumice McClanahan; and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held with Pastor Daniel Dent officiating.

Charles G. “Smitty” Smith

Charles G. “Smitty” Smith, 79, of St. Albans passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 7, at home. He was preceded in death by his mother, Leona Blount Graley, stepfather, John Graley, Jr., wife, Carolyn Sue Smith, brother, John Graley, III, and sister Carla Bower.

Charles was raised in Campbells Creek and also grew up in Alum Creek. He was a 1961 graduate of Washington High School. He was a Christian, a retired truck driver, and a beloved “Big Popaw”. He loved his Mountaineers and spending time at his Pocahontas County camp.

He is survived by his daughter, Cathy (Donald) Peal of Hurricane, son, Charles (Amie) Smith of Tornado, and daughter Becky (Scott) Stevens of El Paso, TX, brother, Ronnie Graley of St. Albans, eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Craig Gillenwater officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Priscilla “Doll” Ruth Hoffman

Priscilla “Doll” Ruth Hoffman, 96, of Alum Creek, WV, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, August 7, 2022, at the home of her daughter, Sue Blair.

She was born to the late John and Bertha Hudson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, “her honey”, George Hoffman, her daughter, Sharon Hoffman, her son, Ronnie Hoffman, daughter-in-law, Sue Hoffman, sons-in-law, Gary Blair and John Lett.

She lived the life of a Proverbs 31 woman: “doing her husband good, working willingly with her hands, looking well to the ways of her household, and speaking with wisdom and kindness.”

She was a homemaker and a mother of 7 children. She spent many days getting the children ready for school and tending to chores such as milking the cows, washing the clothes on a washboard, and cooking 3 meals a day for a family of 9. Once her children were grown, she enjoyed spending time crafting, quilting, embroidering, sewing, crocheting, painting, playing the guitar, and reading.

She was always ready to share how “The Good Lord” had taken care of her. She would often be found praying for her family, and her testimony in her last days was that she could still talk to the Lord. She attended McCorkle FWB church, and she loved her church family.

She is survived by 5 children, Terry (Shirley) Hoffman of Nitro, WV, Beverly Sue Blair of South Charleston, WV, Dean Hoffman of Cross Lanes, WV, Dana (Darlene) Hoffman of Alum Creek, WV, and Debbie Lett of St. Albans, WV, one daughter-in-law, Lois Hoffman of Nitro, WV, siblings, Mitchell (Charlotte) Hudson and Vallie Hudson, and sister-in-law, Martha Hudson.

She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston with Pastors Isaiah Hatfield and Craig Gillenwater officiating.

The family would like to send a special thanks to Hospice, especially nurses Kayla, Jennifer, Ashley, and Chris. They went above and beyond their jobs. Also, thanks to the staff of Kindred at Home. The family holds a special appreciation for the care their mother received from her daughter, Sue Blair, and her grandson, Gary Ed Blair.

Rosie Bethelen Bryant

Rosie Bethelen Bryant, 91, of Yawkey, WV, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Lowell Ray Bryant, parents, Clemon & Gracie Adkins Brumfield, brothers, James Henry, and Kyle Brumfield and sister, Lillian Mitchell.

She was a member of Sand Fork Baptist Church since she was five years old.

She is survived by her six children, Lowell Jr. (Donna) Bryant, Rosa McFarland, Charlene Keesee, David (Darlene) Bryant, Karen Smith, and Tammy (Larry) Barr. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Misty, Jamey, Amanda, Pamela, Shawna, Jennifer, Jessica, Jeremy, Leslie, Stacy, Kristen and Bethelen, 30 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1:00pm Monday, August 8, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastors Rick Cooper and Terry Sponaugle officiating. Burial will follow at the Miller Cemetery, at Sweetland.

Family & friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Brenda Ann Compton

Brenda Ann Compton, 68, of Alum Creek, WV, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2022, at CAMC-Memorial Hospice. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ronnie and Irma Rife Childress.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph, son, Anthony Ray Childress (Wendy) of Gilbert, AZ, stepdaughter, Susan Compton and step-son, Joseph Compton, Jr., of Big Chimney, WV.

There will be no service.

Carl Charles Chandler

Carl Charles Chandler, 89, of Jackson, OH, formerly of Alum Creek, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Ohio State University Hospital after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Bethel Saul Chandler, brother, Delano and sister, Carnell.

He served in the U.S. Army as a cryptographer during the Korean War. He was retired as a mechanical foreman from Dupont Chemical Plant. Carl was well known for his carpentry skills. He was a member of the Alum Creek Lions Club for over 40 years and was a member of the Huntington Beagle Club. He loved raising and running his beagles.

Carl is survived by his wife, Betty of 68 years. He is also survived by his brother Douglas Lowell (Ivone) Chandler of Port Orange, FL, and sister, Ruth (Jack) Vickers, Peterstown, WV, and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00pm Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV, with Pastor Jody Pistore officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

Visitation will be 6:00pm to 7:30pm Friday, August 5, 2022, at the funeral home.

Eugene Perry Seabolt

Eugene Perry Seabolt, 65, of Sumerco, passed away Friday, July 29, 2022, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington.

Eugene was a bricklayer with JW Seabolt Construction. He was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos Lee and Frances Louise Larch Seabolt; siblings, Faye, Lee, and Roy; father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Helen Teel.

Eugene is survived by his wife of 45 years, Debra; sons, Eugene “Joey” (Jessica) Seabolt and Richard (Karen) Seabolt; grandchildren, Amos, Tamika, Hunter, Wyatt, Faith, Ashley, Roger, Sonny; great grandchildren, Ashton and Noah; sister, Betty; and several other family members.

Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 7, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Charlie Shelton officiating. Burial will follow at Seabolt Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Wilda Conner Dixon

Wilda Conner Dixon, 88, of Alum Creek, formerly of Charleston, WV, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at home after a long illness. She was born May 23, 1934, in Nicholas County, WV and was the daughter of the late Archie Conner and Cleo Knight Conner. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Robert Dixon, sisters, Pauline Brown and Wanda Hoover and her brother, Earl Conner.

Wilda was of the Baptist faith and attended Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church when her health allowed. She was always eager to share the love and goodness of our Lord with others. She was a homemaker and mother of a busy household. Many times, caring for others in her home including extended family members and sometimes even acquaintances who needed a helping hand.

Wilda was a very talented seamstress for her home and family. She shared this talent outside the home for several years at Bobby Brooks, Frankenbergers, some exclusive dress shops and even as a home-based business. Even with her failing health she would crochet and use her artistic talents to make gifts for family and friends. As a mother, grandmother, and sister she will be greatly missed.

Wilda is survived by her four children, Sharon Hylton (Mark) of Mineral Wells, WV, Mark Dixon of St. Albans, WV, Cindy Dixon of Alum Creek, WV, and Teresa Good (John) of Kenna, WV.

She is also survived by six grandchildren, Nathaniel Good (Jessee) of Winnipeg, Canada, Audrey Hylton of Parkersburg, WV, Matthew Good (Cassandra) of Denver, CO, Matthew Hylton of CO, Sarah Dixon of Alum Creek, WV, Heather Dixon (Bobby King) of South Charleston, WV, great-granddaughters, Josie and Skylar of South Charleston, WV, brother, Carl Conner (Diane) and sister, Brenda Snider.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Doug Conner officiating. Graveside service will be 4:00 p.m., at Johnson Family Cemetery, Braxton County. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, August 5, 2022, at the funeral home.

Mary Ann Mullins

Mary Ann Mullins, 98, of Charleston went to be with the Lord Monday, August 1, 2022, at home.

Mary retired from Kanawha County Schools and was a member of Canaan United Methodist Church, Charleston.  She also volunteered for the Charleston Police Academy Alumni Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert “Moon” Mullins; daughter, Vicki Dunn; parents, Theodore and Parashkive “Freda” Konokas; and sisters, Christine and Catherine Konokas.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Nancy Bricker; sister, Sally (Jim) Dukas; nieces, Kathy Brant and Denise (Steve) Highland; 3 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 5, 2022, at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

The family would like to send a special thanks to Visiting Angels, especially Sherry Massey and Kanawha Hospice, especially Cheryl Bice and Abby Starcher.
