Ted Loftis

Ted Loftis, born June 26, 1919, went to be with his heavenly Father December 16, 2004.

He was the son of William Ira and Pearlie Loftis, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred; son, Dwight; and daughters Ellen Childers and Carol Maynard.

He was retired from Union Carbide as a construction worker, a member of Labors Union Loca11353 and a Navy Veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, who was his loyal and devoted caregiver for the past eight years; daughters, Carol Turley, Pat Turley, Kay Pahl and Janice Goeglein; sons, Teddy Loftis, Roger Loftis and David Lucas; sister, Elsie McCormick; brother, Elwood “Teed” Loftis; 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and three three step-grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him greatly.

Service will be 1:00 PM Saturday, December 18, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Rev. Jackie Miller and Rev. Craig Gillenwater officiating. Burial will be in Midkiff Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dunbar for their kindness and care.

Fred A. Gee

Fred A. Gee, 72, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 13, 2004 at home after a long illness.

He was the director of Child Evangelism Fellowship in Kanawha, Boone and Clay counties for 19 years. He graduated from Philadelphia College of Bible in 1973 and was a member of Bible Center Church.

Fred is survived by his wife of 51 years, Peggy; children, Craig Gee and wife, Cazolotta of Huntington, Steven Gee and wife, Jean of Lake Piacid, Florida, Marylynn Saloiye and husband, John, of South Charleston, Kathleen Jansohn and husband, Fred of South Charleston, Carolyn McMellen and husband, Michael of South Charleston, Jonathan Gee, and wife, Deborah of Lynchburg, Virginia; 17 grandchildren; two great grandsons; three brothers, Edward, Frank and Douglas Gee all of New Jersey; one sister, Susan Weber of South Carolina; sister-in-law, Nancy Klischies of New Jersey; brother-in-law, Jim Catling of Florida.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 19, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Bible Center Church on Corridor G in Charleston with Pastors Shawn Thornton, Jesse Waggoner, Jim McQuerrey, Tim Pauley and Craig Gee officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Children’s Ministries of Bible Center Church, 1111 Oakhurst Drive, Charleston, WV 25314 or Child Evangelism Fellowship, 1413 Bigley Avenue, Charleston, WV 25302.

Norris R. Keeling

Norris R. Keeling, 82, of Garretts Bend went home to be with the Lord Sunday, December 12, 2004 surrounded by his family at Thomas Memorial Hospital So. Charleston after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Maxine Keeling by 16 months. He was a tender, loving father and grandfather and will be sadly missed.
Norris served in the US Anny during W WII and had retired from Appalachian Power Company after 38 years. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Garretts Bend where he was ordained as a deacon in 1962. Norris was also the choir director for more than 50 years, and served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and Trustee.

He is survived by: Son and daughter-in-law: Roger and Sandi Keeling of Scott Depot;2 Grandchildren: Erin Keeling of Streetsboro, Ohio Derek Keeling of New York, NY; One Sister: Clarice Pauley of Salem, Virginia; and a host of beloved friends and special family, especially Wanda Davis.

Norris has said many times that if he could live anywhere on earth he would still chose Garretts Bend. He loved the people there and called them the best neighbors anyone could have. Serving the Lord, singing and attending church was his life so we know now that he is in an even better place.

The family would like to Thank the Nurses and Doctors of Thomas Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, CCU and ICU for their compassionate care.

The Family will be receiving friends at Norris’s home Monday beginning at 5:00 PM.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Winford Curry and Pastor Jackie Miller officiating. Burial will beheld in the Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call from 6 to 9 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Robert Dale Sowards

Robert Dale Sowards, 64, of Alkol died Thursday, Dec 9, 2004 at home after a long illness.

He was a stone mason and worked in construction. Robert was preceded in death by his parents: Edith Linville &Woodrow Sowards, and brother, Hershel Sowards.

Robert is survived by his wife: Rose; 2 sons: Wayne Loftis of Sumerco Anthony Loftis at home; 1 daughter: Anita Adkins of Spurlocksville; 5 sisters :011ie Bostic of Griffithsville Wanda Bostic of Gay, WV; Anna Gue of Branchland Linda Cobb of Alum Creek; Mena Stanley of VA; 5 Bros: Woodrow Sowards, Jr. of Sumerco; O. Jay Sowards of South Carolina; Frankie Sowards, Warren and Herman Montcastle, all of Yawkey; 4 Grandsons: Andy, Justin, Derek, Jared 3 Granddaughters: Melissa, Emily & Whitney; Host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be 2:00 PM on Saturday, Dec 11, 2004 at the Mud River Fire Department on Bulger Road. Burial will be in the Richmond Family Cemetery, Spurlocksville. Morgan Stephen Goff

Morgan Stephen Goff went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, December 8, 2004. He was born August 13, 1962, to Rev. Donald L. & Loretta Ennis Goff in Shelby, NC.

Morgan was a graduate of Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA and was an ordained Baptist Minister. He was preceded in death by his dad, Rev. Donald L. Goff.

He is survived by: Mother & Step-Father: Loretta & Conrad Midkiff of St Albans; Son & Daughter: Christopher & Nicole Goff, both of Cottonwood, CA; Maternal Grandparents: Arlie &Virginia Ennis of St Albans; Brother & sister-in-law: Michael Wayne & Christina Goff; Sisters & brothers-in-law: Joyce Ann & Clark Testerman; Kathy Sue & Donald Beidenback all of Baltimore, MD; 4 nieces &nephew.

Services will be 11:00 AM Monday, Dec 13, 2004, at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel in Alum Creek with Pastor James Poe Officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery at Tornado, WV. Norma Jean Black Holbrook

Norma Jean Black Holbrook, 75, of Tornado, died Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at home after long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elisha Holbrook, Sr.; sister, Barbara Stewart and stepson, Ronald Holbrook.

She is survived by her seven children, Wanda Snyder, Earl Lee, Virginia Sprout, James Lee, Charles Holbrook, Elisha Holbrook, Jr., and William Holbrook; two step-sons, John and Terry Holbrook; three brothers, Paul, Bill and Jim Black; three sisters, Loretta Howell, Ida Robbins, Linda Hokavar; 27 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Saturday, December 11, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. A private service and burial will be held at a later date.

Edith Glenn

Edith Glenn, 92, of South Charleston, died Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at home after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, John, on October 25, 2004.

She was a Christian and a member of the Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene.

Edith is survived by her son, William L. Glenn and wife, Jill of South Charleston; daughter, Nancy Nolan of South Charleston; four grandchildren, Cathy Brown, Bill, Tim and Rebecca Glenn; eight great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Friday, December 3, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Frank Goff officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, is in care of the arrangements.

Cecil O. Barker

Cecil O. Barker, 86, of Charleston, went home to be with Jesus on Monday, November 22, 2004 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his son, C. Franklin Barker; great granddaughter, Alexis Barker; three sisters, Geraldine Graley, Pauline Dangerfield, and Isabelle Gillispie.

Cecil was a retired welder from FMC with 38 years of service, attended Ruth Community Church for 63 years and was a W WII Navy veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille; sister, Zella Gillispie of Alum Creek; grandchildren, Lisa Elliot and husband, Brian of Ohio, Rick F. Barker and wife Anji of Cross Lanes; five great grandchildren, Nicholas and Lindsay Elliott; Michael, Cari, and Kamea Barker.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors F. A. Giles and Mayford Witt officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Juanita Moore Songer

Juanita Moore Songer, 83, of Alum Creek died Thursday, November 18, 2004 at CAMC Memorial after a sudden illness.

She was a former employee of Rose’s Shopping Center and had served as a cook at Midway Elementary.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Moore and sons, Clark and Carl Rhodes.

She is survived by her two daughters, Karen Dunlap and Adene Barker both of Alum Creek; two sons, Billy Moore of Alum Creek and Bob Moore of Tennessee; sister, Geneva Blackshire; four brothers, Herbert, Richard, Bob and Ray Cobb. Juanita will also be missed by 22 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00 AM on Monday, November 22, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in the Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.

Effie L. Lovejoy, 85, of Alum Creek, West Virginia went home to be with the Lord Thursday, November 18, 2004 at home after a short illness.
She was a was preceded in death by her husband, Walter S. Lovejoy.

She was a retired co-owner and secretary of W. S. Lovejoy Drilling of Alum Creek and was of the Baptist faith.

Effie is survived by her two daughters and son-in-laws, LouElla and Bob Jackson of Northbrook, Ill, Don Rheta and David Margolis of Clayton, NC; three sons and daughters-in-law, Walter S. Jr. and Pat Lovejoy of Sod, John E. and Rebecca Lovejoy of Alum Creek, Richard L. and Denise Lovejoy of St. Petersburg, FL; brother, E. J. Cooper of Chazleston; two sisters, Glenna Stone of Sod, Esta Daugherty of South Charleston; 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren.

Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, November 22, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell and Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Family and friends will gather from 4 to 6 PM Sunday at the funeral home.
