Lucy Tackett

Lucy Gay King Tackett, 89, of Gordon, Wisconsin, formerly of Lincoln County, WV, went home to be with the Lord Friday, August 12, 2011. Gay was the wife of the late Troy Columbus Tackett and was also preceded in death by her parents Olen Crown King and Martha Ann Lake King, daughter, Daisy Sowards, two sons, Troy and Elbert Tackett, stepson, Junior Tackett and stepdaughter Sybil Lovejoy. She leaves behind a huge family that love her and will miss her very much.

She is Survived by 5 Daughters: Sharon (Bill) Finney, Shinnston, WV Marcella (Steve)Richetta, Gordon, WI Dottie Jude, Mt. Sterling, KY Rosemary (Craig) Smith, Frostproof, FL Sue (Larry) Carroll, Sod, WV.  Sons: Tommy (Patty) Tackett, Sumerco, Eddie (Donna) Tackett, Alum Creek  Brother: Albert King, Ohio, 33 Grandchildren, 49 Grant Grandchildren, Several Great, Great Grandchildren

Services will be held 11:00am on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek,  with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be at the Barker Cemetery at Ashford.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dewey Harvey

Dewey Andrew Harvey, 68, Sumerco, WV, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington, WV, as a result of injuries received in a single car accident in Kentucky on August 4th.  He was predeceased by his parents Cesco and Virginia Harvey.He was a driver for Quality Mine Control

 He is survived by:  Daughters:  Renee Harvey, Sumerco Tina (Chris) Holley, South Charleston.  Brothers:  Harry(Barb) , Harold (Joan), Cesco (Joy)  Sisters:  Jane Harvey Schaeffer and  Mae (Guy) Schultz  Grandchildren:  Cody & Justin Holley and Alyssa Harvey-Falls.

 Services will be at 11:00am on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Billy Silva officiating.  Burial will be at the Miller Cemetery on Ely Road at McCorkle.

 In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the Madison V.F.W., Memorial Building, Washington St., Madison, WV 25130.

 Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00pm on Tuesday, August 16th at the funeral home

Joe Hudnall

Joe Hudnall 58 ,of Dunbar formerly of Hernshaw and raised in East Bank, went home to be with the Lord Thursday August 11, 2011.

Preceded in death by his father and mother Grover and Minnie Hudnall of East Bank, brothers and sisters, Barbara Richards, Glen Hudnall, Ethel Searls, Elizabeth Tenney, Johnny Hudnall and Audrey Hanshaw.

He proudly served his country in the United States National Guard from 1972 to 1973, finished his military career serving in the United States Army from 1973 to 1975 and loved being a member of the Big Red One. Also, a proud member of the United Mine Workers Association after 24 years of service, retiring from the Eagle Energy Coal Mine at Van, West Virginia, with the majority of his career spent working as a certified electrician on a long wall coal miner.

Joe was a member of the Lens Creek Church of the Nazarene where he obtained his local minister’s license.

He is survived by his wife Pam of 38 years, sons Michael (Angela) of Beckley and Jonathan of Cross Lanes, special grandson Logan of Beckley, brothers and sisters, Thelma Martin of Marmet, Freda Bongalis of Tallahassee, Florida, Roosevelt Hudnall of Winifrede, and twin sister Joetta Pauley of Charleston.

Service will be noon Monday at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Patrick McGue and Joe Vance. Entombment with military rites will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Cross Lanes. A gathering of family and friends will be 2 to 4 pm Sunday at the funeral home.

 

Charles Bowman

Charles Alzon “Charlie” Bowman of Brown’s Creek Road, Saint Albans, passed away August 8, 2011, at home with his family by his side after a valiant year long fight with cancer. Born April 20, 1946, at his family home in Alum Creek, he was a 1964 graduate of Duval High School and attended West Virginia State College before joining Boilermaker Union Local 667 until his retirement in 1998. An avid sportsman his entire life, he excelled at baseball, football, basketball, and motor cross racing before devoting his life to golf in the mid-1970s and volunteering for the Kanawha County Parks and Recreation at Big Bend Golf Course in Tornado for over twelve years during his retirement.

He is preceded in death by his parents Alzon and Opal Bowman, infant son Christopher Anthony, and sister Beverly Ryan.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of forty-six years, Linda; his children, Charles Jr. “Chuck” and wife Cyndi of Saint Albans, Sonya Dunlap and husband Jay of Sod; his four ‘little darlings’—grandchildren, Weston Jay and Gavin Lee Dunlap, and Natalie Mae and Joseph Kyle Bowman; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Fint Parsons of North Olmstead, Ohio, Jo Ann and Dean Loftis of Alkol, Lillie Bowman of New Orleans, LA, and Steve Ryan of Canton, MI; father and mother-in-law, Virgil and Golda Smith of Sod, brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Donna Smith of Clendenin; eight nieces and nephews, nine great nieces and nephews, several first cousins, and a host of special childhood, Boilermaker, and golfing buddies too numerous to mention.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Friday, August 12, at the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church, 2309 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastors Frank Chapman and Paul Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in Lively Cemetery, Sod, with fellow retired Union brothers Bill Bosher, Ron Bush, Mike Durfee, Charlie Fisher, Ron Givens, Roger Henley, Roger Marion, and Jim Skeens serving as pall-bearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday at the church and would be honored by your donations made in Charlie’s name to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., West, Charleston, WV 25387-2536.

Jeremy A. Saul

Jeremy A. Saul, 31, of Sod passed away Wednesday July 13, 2011.  He is survived by his children; Jacob and Haylee Saul, mother; Kimberly Proctor, father; Ronnie Saul, grandmother; Melba Saul, sisters; Jessica Elswick, Alana and Heather Saul, and brother; Cody Saul.

Graveside service will be 11:00 am Monday, at Lively Cemetery Sod.  In lieu of flowers, the family request contribution toward funeral services.  Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek is serving the Saul family.

Luther Lee Toney

Luther Lee Toney, 71, of Branchland, WV was born June 22, 1940 in Leet, WV, and died Thursday, July 7, 2011 in Cabell County, WV.  He was a loving husband, father and forever friend. He had lots of CB buddies, and to them he was Black Eyed Pea.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Patterson and Rhoda (Lovejoy) Toney Thompson; sisters: Tilda Dotson, Jean Stowers and Kizzie Dotson; step-sons: Lonnie Rodney Curry and Dennis Gene Pauley; grandson, Christopher Lee Cornell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Virginia Annalee (Cornell) Toney; Sons: Luther Ray & Sheila Ann Toney and Stanley David Toney both of Branchland; Daughter: Doris Ellen and Ray Oliver Pauley, Jr. of Scott Depot; Sisters: Elmie of Madison; Beulah & Larry Holley of Hamlin; Arbutus and Denzil Cooper of Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 3:00 PM Monday, July 11, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek. Burial will follow in Cross Creek Cemetery, Buffalo. Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made for the funeral service.

Frank Carson Armstrong

Frank Carson Armstrong, 75, of Ripley went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 4, 2011 at CAMC Memorial Division.  He was a coal miner.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Phoeba; son, James; daughter, Margaret Scarberry; and sister, Betty Lee Caniglia.

He is survived by: 5 Daughter: Rachel (Zack) Pauley; Barbara (Timmy) Banks; Charlene Day (Robert Selbe); Kathy (Bethel) Smith; Sheila (James) Cooper; 23 Grandchildren; 33 Great Grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren and 3 nieces.

Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Friday, July 8, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Kenneth Dunlap officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco. Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

George F. Goode

George F. Goode, 84, of St. Albans went home to be with the Lord Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Valley Center after a short illness.  He was retired from Pepsi Cola after 38 years service. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a faithful member and deacon of the South Charleston Church of Christ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, David & Sarah Goode; sisters, Gracie, Elsie and Viola; brother, Frank, Walter and Freeman.  Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Helen; Sister: Goldie Smith; 3 Sons: Daniel (Julie), Ronald and Allen; Grandchildren: Christopher, Heather, Allen Eugene, Kim, Tiffany and Katlyn.

Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Minister Richard Runyan officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768. Family and friends will gather Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Shirley K. Dunlap

Shirley K. Dunlap 72, of McCorkle went home to be with the Lord Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her sisters: Zulema Miller, Mabel Pauley and brother, Freeman Brogan.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Bo Melvin Dunlap; 4 Sons: Scotty, Norris, Ted and Jamey; 3 Step-children: Rita Walls, Kevin & Lisa Dunlap; Brother: Randall Butch Brogan; 11 Grandchildren; and 17 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Roe Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, McCorkle. Family and Friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions may be made toward funeral services.

Ruth Church Cox

            Ruth Church Cox, 84, of St. Albans went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 9, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV.

            Ruth was born on July 28, 1926 to Rufus and Pearl Church of McDowell County. She was preceded in death by her parents, all four of her brothers: Phil, Corbett, Ed and Bill Church, and her husband, William Cox. She is survived by daughters, Cathy Hawk,Loganville,GA, Connie Campbell (Richard),  St. Albans, and Aaron Pendry,St. Albans. Ruth was also a loving grandmother to David Dubois (Andrea)  Tyler,TX,  ChadCampbell (Nicole),  St. Albans, Darren Dubois (Carmen),  Conyers, GA, Dustin Campbell, Philadelphia, PA, Alex Campbell, St. Albans and Logan Truman, St. Albans. She leaves behind three great grandchildren to help continue her legacy: Will and Chance Campbell and Cade Dubois.

            Ruth leaves behind wonderful memories of her self-less, compassionate service to all who crossed her path. She graduated from Charleston General Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She spent her life using the skills she learned there to care for others. She worked atCharleston GeneralHospitaluntil 1960. Ruth then  worked for the medical department at DuPont, until her retirement in 1985.

            Ruth’s loves were family, nursing and her church, Highlawn Baptist of St. Albans. She had been a member there since 1965 and served her church in many capacities over the years. Members there came to depend on her compassionate, helpful service. She was, indeed, an example of Christ’s love to all who knew her.

            A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at Highlawn Baptist Church on Sunday, June 12th    with  pastor  Mark Stauffer officiating.   Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.  Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the church.              The family would like to offer our sincere appreciation to the entire staff of Hubbard Hospice House for the exceptional loving care our mother was given. We would also like to thank Dr. Jonathan Lilly for his many years of care and concern. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hubbard Hospice House of Charleston.  Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek is in care of arrangements.
