Elmer TylerElmer “Brother” Tyler, Jr., 81, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Elmer & Hattie Tyler and step-mother Louise Kirk Tyler; brothers: Jackie Joe & Kelly; sisters: Mary Oscha and Norene Tyler.

He was owner operator of Tyler Cash Grocery.

He is survived by his brother: Hassel (Diana) Alum Creek;  sisters: Jane Hitchcock, Hamlin,  Evelyn (Bo) Dunlap McCorkle, Reba (George) Gibson, Alum Creek, Opal (Donald) Collins of Florida, Wilma (Richard) Tyler, Alum Creek and Margie Holstine, Alum Creek; special niece, Melissa Tyler and a host of other nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be 1:00pm Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating.  Burial will follow at Miller Cemetery on Ballard Road, Alum Creek.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Samuel “Sambo” Lee Stone Staggs

Samuel “Sambo” Lee  Stone Staggs, 59 of Brounland Road. Alum Creek, went home to the Lord, Sunday July 10, 2016 at Hubbard Hospice House.

He is survived by his; mother, Betty Jean Staggs, brothers, Dempsey Browning, of Cabin Creek, Roger Stone of So. Charleston, sister, Donna Gibson of Olcott, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be 11:00 AM Saturday July 16 at the Olcott Community Church with Pastor Martha Kirk officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Sammy David Richardson

Sammy RichardsonSammy David Richardson, 55, of Alum Creek passed away at his home Saturday, July 9, 2016.

He was employed by Equity Contractors of Charleston, WV

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clara & Hampton Richardson.

He is survived by his wife, Mischelle; daughter, Brigit Dunning; son, Mathew Richardson; granddaughters: Paige Dunning, Karly Richardson; grandson: Blake Bays; brother, Donald (Theresa) Richardson of South Carolina; sisters: JoAnn (Chester) King, and Brenda (Donald) Martin  of South Carolina and a host of friends who will greatly miss him.

Memorial service will be held 4:00pm, Friday, July 15th at Yawkey Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde Cooper officiating.

Olivene (Brownie) Chandler

Olivene ChandlerOlivene (Brownie) Chandler, 94, of Ripley, WV, was lifted by angels Tuesday, June 28, 2016 with her family by her side.

She was born December 29, 1921 in Left Fork, Lincoln County, WV.  She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, George, Jr.; parents, Hansford “Hank” and Nannie Hager Linville; and sister, Marigold Atkins.

Olivene was a graduate of Marshall University and taught school for 30 years in Lincoln, Roane and Jackson County.  She loved children and many have told the family over the years she was their favorite teacher.

She always had a smile and loved to joke and tell stories of her childhood and years of experiences in life.  It was a joy to sit and listen to her tales and laughter.  She loved reading, working puzzles, playing Yahtzee and most of all spending time with family.

Olivene had many caretakers in her later years of life and truly loved each as family.  We are very grateful for their love and assistance.

She loved music and singing.  She and her husband, George, sang in a gospel quartet in their early years of marriage, along with her father and uncle; and she always enjoyed singing with her daughter, Sharon.

Olivene’s gentle soul, kindness and unconditional love will be missed by her family and friends.  She was a member of The Church of Christ and had a very strong faith.

She is survived by her son, Rodney Hale of Alum Creek; daughter, Sharon Chandler and Jim Nielsen of Ripley; former daughter-in-law, Judy Hale of Winfield; former son-in-law, Keddy Williamson of Bradenton, FL; grandchildren, Lee Hale and Leah Nicole Hale of Alum Creek; great grandchildren, Jake, Lainey and Lilly all of Alum Creek; and her beloved puppy dog, Mickey.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Minister Jordan Barr officiating.  She will be laid to rest at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Sumerco, Lincoln County, WV.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Union Mission Ministries, Inc., P. O. Box 112, Charleston, WV  25321-9982 for the flood victims of West Virginia, or the charity of your choice.

Damon Lee Harrison

Damon Lee Harrison, Sr., 79, of Charleston, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 18, 2016.

He was preceded in death by his life-long partner Connie Fowler; parents, Luther & Gearthel Harrison; brothers, Stanley, Weetsie, Paul and Willi Harrison; sister, Peggy and grandson,  Ricky “Bubby” Huffman.

He is survived by his daughters,  Melinda (Rick) Huffman and Mindy Brown Mallett; son, Damon (Emily) Harrison; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, Bibby, Jerry, Earl “Bugs” and Allen; sisters, Sissy Nelson and Sandy Breedlove and two very close friends, Irvin and Dale Escue.

Services will be 2:00pm Thursday, June 23, 2016 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery, Ashford.  Visitation will be two hours prior to service.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Hospice, especially Izzy, RN, Holly, CNA, and Becky, SW.

Darrell Dana Fields

Darrell FieldsDarrell Dana Fields, 66, of South Charleston, went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 18, 2016,  at home after a long illness.

He was a retired operator at DuPont in Belle with 32 years service.  He was a Christian and an active member of Mountain Heights Church.  He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

He is preceded in death by his parents Collett & Lola Fields, sister, Carolyn Banasik and brother, Jarrell Fields.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Beverly; sons: Brian Fields (Angie) and Anthony Darian Fields (Kari); grandchildren: Bryan Michael Fields, Katie Fields; step-grandchildren: Mikayla and Drew Clark, Cory, Brandy and Hunter McNeely; and sister: Delores Bush, South Charleston.

Services will be 11:00am Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Mountain Heights Church, 1201 Chestnut St., South Charleston, with Pastors Brad Joseph and Rob Lemon officiating.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park with military graveside rites by Alum Creek VFW #4768.  Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 Tuesday, June 21st at the church.

Following the burial a dinner for family and friends will be held at the Church Activity Building.

Wilma L. Teel

Wilma Teel photoWilma Lee Teel (83) of Scott Depot, WV passed on to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Hubbard Hospice House West at Thomas Hospital after a long illness. She was surrounded by her loving children and loved ones.

She is preceded in death by her parents Ercel and Millie Dunlap both of Sod; sister Ganava Hughes of St. Albans and husband Steven Homer Teel of Dunbar.

She was a loving, respected and honorable Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Pauley-Brown of St. Albans; son, Shawn Pauley of St. Albans, sister, Trilby Baumgartner of Scott Depot, brother, Jacky Dunlap (Charlene) of Sod,  Wilma has three Grandchildren: Christopher Pauley (Ruth) of Orrville, OH, Kelli Marshall (Adam) of Charleston and Josh Pauley of South Charleston, She also has six Great-Grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wilma Teel (Dunlap) was born in Mahan, WV on November 28, 1932 and grew up in Sod. She worked and retired from the K-Mart Corporation located at the Patrick Street Plaza in Charleston. She attended Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Hurricane, before she became to ill to attend any longer. She was a born-again Christian and full body water baptized. She loved working in her flower garden, tending her yard, decorating, cooking and helping others.

Funeral services will be held at Curry Funeral Home located in Alum Creek, on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. Visitation: 11 am for family. 12 pm-1 pm for everyone else and service, following with burial at Cunningham Cemetery located in St. Albans, with Pastor Lou Coffman officiating. Everyone is welcome.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Hubbard Hospice-West for taking such wonderful and loving care of our Mother and to Pastor Lou Coffman for her untiring dedication, support and love.

Van Buren Pauley Jr.

Van Pauley Jr. obit photoVan Buren Pauley Jr., 88, of Sod went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 16, 2016 at home after a long illness.

He was a WWII Army Air Force veteran. After coming home he worked as a coal miner in Boone County for 17 years then 28 years in construction helping build several large buildings in Charleston including Commerce Square now Huntington Banks and Kanawha Valley now BB&T. He is a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church. He loved gardening, fishing and hunting with his trained Norwegian Elkhounds.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Van Buren Sr. & Lola Dunlap Pauley; wife, Naomi Pauley; 2 sisters, Evelyn McCormick, Juanita Huffman; brother, Billy Pauley.

He is survived by his 2 daughters, Phyllis (Buddy) Dunlap of Sod; Kathy (Bill) Buckland of South Charleston; Son, Van E. (Pratoom) Pauley of Sod; 4 grandsons, Cameron (Cindy) Dunlap, Billy Buckland, Paul (Amanda) Buckland, Bobby Dawson; 7 great grandchildren, Ethan, Evan, Isaiah, Elijah, Jaydin, Jase & Naomi; 1 brother, Pete (Nancy) Pauley of South Charleston & many other family members and friends.

Services will be 3:00 PM Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Rd. with Pastors David Cooper, Ron Stott & Butch Brogan officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery at Sumerco, WV with military gravesite rites by Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

Family and friends will gather 2 hours prior to the service.

Timothy James McCormick

He was a member of the International Brotherhood Boiler Makers Local 667.

He is survived by his dad and step-mother, Jim & Mary Lou McCormick of Hurricane; Mother Trish McCormick of Teays Valley; brother Richard McCormick of Teays Valley; sisters Jamie(Kris) Mallory of St. Albans, Mary Beth Lewis of Teays Valley; 4 nieces, many Aunts & Uncles and other family who loved him.

Services will be 3:00 PM Friday June 17, 2016 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery at Sumerco.   Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service.

Paul Irvin Thomas

Paul Irvin Thomas, 84, of Parma, Ohio, formerly of St. Albans, went home to the Lord Saturday, June 11, 2016.

He was preceded in death by: parents Albert Franklin Thomas and Ana May Thomas, brother Herbert – died in WWII, Franklin and Francis.

He was a U. S. Army veteran serving in Alaska from 1949 – 1951, he worked for Ford Motor Company, Walton Hills, Ohio for 38 years. He enjoyed serving as a member of Columbia Station Baptist Church in Ohio and Highlawn Baptist Church in WV.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Jean; children, Paul Herbert Thomas of Tampa, Fl., Alan Ray Thomas of Katy, Texas, Sharon Herman of Parma, OH and Steven Kyle Thomas of Anchorage, Ak.; sisters,  Doris Wooten of Huntington and Gerry Brown of St. Albans; grandchildren Brandon Herman, Ryan Herman, Kyle Herman, Abby Thomas, Julia Thomas, Elizabeth Columbo, and great grandchildren Scott Herman and Makenzie Herman and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2016 at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave., St. Albans with Dr. Rev. Mark Stauffer officiating.  Burial will follow at Teays Hill Cemetery, St. Albans. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Highlawn Baptist Church.
