Gene CurryClenton E. Gene Curry

Gene Curry, 84, of Alum Creek went home to be with his Lord on Monday, June 21, 2010 at CAMC Memorial Division with his family by his side. He fought a courageous battle with cancer for 7 years. He was born on July 4, 1925 to the late Raymond & Alberta Curry of Hamlin.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Jane Ann Curry; sister-in-law, Linda Curry..

Gene was founder of Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek in 1949, and co-owner of Casdorph and Curry Funeral Home in St. Albans from 1969 to 1987.
He was a member of the W.Va. Funeral Directors Association, and the National Funeral Director Association. He was a member of Dunbar Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rites Bodies, and the Beni Kedem Shrine. He was a Charter member of the Alum Creek Lions Club, a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, a Life member of Benny Padilla Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 . He was past deacon and faithful member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek He was a recipient of many distinguished service awards from state, city & community organizations. He was recently recognized as Citizen of the Century of the Alum Creek Centennial of 2010 celebration.

Gene served as past chairman of the board of directors at Citizen National Bank ,Bank One, now  Bank One and a former member of the St. Albans Rotary Club and St. Albans American Legion Post 73.

Surviving Gene is his loving wife of 59 ½ years, Betty Rabel Curry, they never tired of saying and hearing “I love you” many times a day.

11 Grandchildren: Tiffany Waters, Stacy Schoderbek, Ashley Fort, Brian Curry (Joy), Heath Curry (Kelly), Haley Miles (David), Chloe & Malie Jane Curry, Pete, Rick & Jeff (Carla) Barnett.

15 Great Grandchildren: Miles, Neena, Makayla, Riley, Charlie, Colt, Sarah, Jacob, Ricky, Breanna, Chad, Troy, Brandon, Blake, Bradon

and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 25, 2010 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Robert (Butch) Leadman , Keith George and Frank Chapman officiating. Burial with Military Graveside Rites conducted by Benny Padilla Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Family and friends will gather Thursday from 1-3 pm and 6 – 9 pm at the funeral home.

The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. James Frame, Dr. Scott Smith, Dr. Edward Hamrick, Dr. Sarah Nease and the doctors and nurses on 4 West CAMC Memorial Division for their excellent and professional care. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, PO Box 506, Alum Creek, WV 25003.

Karen Susie Chapman

Karen Susie Chapman, 57, of South Charleston, died on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a short illness.

She was an employee of AFL-CIO Appalachian Council in Charleston since 1992, and was formerly employed as a bookkeeper for Rose Shopping Center at Alum Creek.

She was predeceased by: brother, Wally Rose; and father, James Walter Rose.

She is survived by: son, Stephen Carl Chapman, Jr. and his wife Sarah, of South Charleston; mother, Pearl Rose and her companion, Leon Daugherty of Nitro; brother, James David (Angela) Rose of South Charleston; one niece; one nephew; one great nephew.

Services will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, June 23, at 11:00am at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Friends and family may gather at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 22, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Evelyn Gillispie

Evelyn Gillispie, 80, of Emmons went home to be with the Lord Thursday, June 17, 2010.

She was preceded in death by her husband Romie, daughter Ruth Ann and son Leonard.

She attended Emmon’s Church of God.

She is survived by her son Virgil (Robin) Gillispie of Emmons, sisters Juanita Graley and Katherine Holstine both of Emmons, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Service will 1:00 pm Monday June 21 at Emmons Church of God with Pastor Pete McNeely officiating. Burial will be at Gillispie Cemetery at Emmons.

Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Mary Price, 85 of South Charleston went home to the Lord Thursday June 17, 2010.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Parker L. Price and daughter Peggy Fultz.

She was a member of Ruth Community Church.

She is survived by her daughters; Betty Tugwell and Reta Pauley both of South Charleston, sister Reba Shew of Spring Hill, 8 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Graveside service and burial will be 11:00 am Monday June 21 at Graceland Memorial Park at South Charleston with Pastor Charles Kidd officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Cathy L. Thornton, 58, of South Charleston went home to the Lord to be one of his angels Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Valley Center, South Charleston.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Fleet and Ova Thornton, and loving brother Calvin.

She was a very loving and happy person who enjoyed playing ball and being at the Thornton reunion, and loved life as a whole.

She is survived by her sisters: Marvella Woodrum of South Charleston and Jean Bays of Wise, Virginia, who has cared for Cathy for the past 23 years;  sister Phyllis Sheets of Cape Coral, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 2:00pm Saturday, June 12, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Kent Estep Officiating.  Burial will be at Orchard Hill Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd, W. Charleston, WV 25312-2536.

The family would like to give special thanks to Zella White, Kanawha Hospice, and Valley Center for the loving care they have given Cathy.

Phyllis M. Harrison, 97, of Ripley – formerly of Dunbar and Brounland – passed away Friday, June 4, 2010 on her birthday, at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley.

She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and Ladies Auxiliary in St. Albans.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Noah; two daughters, Shirley Francisco and Joan Yallourakis; parents, Toney and Belva Bell; four brothers, J.E., Freeman, Sanford, and Shorty Bell; Sister, Eloise Dunlap; Grandson, Kevin Griffith, and great-granddaughter, Raychel.

She is survived by her daughter, Lucy M. (Tommy) Howerton of Sandyville, WV.

3 Sons: Larry (Patsy) Harrison of St. Albans, and John T. (Sandy) Harrison and David (Sharon) Harrison, all of Kentucky.

3 Brothers: Rondall, Kenneth, and Dennie Bell.

She is survived by one nephew: Curtis Joe Shultz, and three great nieces: Charlene, Amanda, and Jennifer.

Bobby K. Arbogast

Bobby K.  Arbogast 71 of So Charleston went to be with the Lord Friday May 14, 2010 after a short couageous battle with Liver cancer at home with his wife, daughters, sister and brothers.

He was the son of the late Roscoe and Edna Arbogast and was also preceded by an infant daughter, Rhonda Kaye, the twin sister of Cheryl.

Bob was a concert pianist and musical genius, the owner of Arbogast Piano in So Charleston, was a member of the So Charleston Lions Club and American Legion Post 94 where he served as commander.  He also served in the U. S. Army 101rst  Airborne Division, Screaming Eagles,  the So Charleston Museum Board and the Visitor and Convention Bureau.

He is survived by his wife Debby

Daughters: Cheryl(Julia Tyson)  Arbogast of Nitro.  Robin (Chris) Carney of Parkersburg and Kendra (Brett Slaterbeck) Arbogast   of Kansas

1 grandson: Dalton Carney
