Taylor Shane Dunlap

Taylor Shane Dunlap 20, of Sod, went home to be with the Lord Friday, June 3, 2011 at Thomas Memorial Hospital So. Charleston.  He was a 2008 graduate of Lincoln Co. High School where he was the school’s first 1000 point scorer in basketball. He was offered many basketball scholarship but choose to attend Marshall University.

He is survived by his, parents, Calvin and Tammy Pauley Dunlap, sisters April Dawn Craddock and Shauna (G.) Cook, 2 special brothers-in-law, Clint Craddock and Bryan Cook, grandparents, Cline and Mae Dunlap and Lowell and Evetta Pauley.  He was like a brother to his very special nieces and nephew, Kaila and Kameron Craddock, and Jayden Cook.  Taylor was also loved by his aunt, uncles, cousins and other family members, and had a special bond with his many friends.

Service will be 11:00 am Friday, June10, 2011 at Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Alkol with Pastor and brother-in-law Clint Craddock officiating. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek. Burial will be at Lively Cemetery at Sod.  In lieu of flowers the family request contributions be made toward the funeral services.

Charles Ray Fletcher, Sr.

Charles Ray Fletcher Sr, 81, of Brounland Road Alum Creek went home to the Lord Thursday June 2, 2011 at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a long illness.  He was retired from Yeager Airport with 19 years of service, and a member of Brier Creek Baptist Church

He was preceded in death by his son; David Fletcher, daughter; Betty Gail Fletcher, parents William and Ellen Fletcher, four sisters and 1 brother.

He is survived by his wife Joanna of 61 years, children; Madonna (Joe) Lude of Ruth, Charles (Sandy) Fletcher, Jr, Ellen McCallister and Leasa Fletcher all of Alum Creek, Melody (Dale) McCormick, Patricia (Jerry) Holstine, Eddie Fletcher, Gary Fletcher and Kenneth Fletcher all of Brounland Road, 17 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, sister Mary (Ernest Pauley) of Dunbar and numberous neices and nephews.  Will be loved and missed by all.

Services will be 1:00 pm Monday, June 6 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastors Michael Gibson and Frank Chapman officiating. Entombment will be at Graceland Memorial Park, So. Charleston. Family and friends will gather 6 to 8 pm Sunday at the funeral home

Rose Marie Roach

Rose Marie Roach, 58, of South Charleston passed away Thursday June 2, 2011 at CAMC Memorial after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her mother and step-father Violet and Herbert Walton, brother Timothy Hall and daughter April Means.

She is survived by her husband Paul of 41 years , daughters, Alisha and Tracy Roach, and son, Paul Roach all of South Charleston, twin sister, Ruby Hall and sister, Judith Walton both of Alum Creek and 9 grandchildren.

Services will be 2:00 pm Sunday June 5, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Lee Hamrick officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers family request contributions be made toward funeral services.

Charmie E. Lewis

Charmie E. Lewis 95, of Alum Creek went home to the Lord Friday May 20, 2011 at the home of her daughter Grace Souder after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband Ira Lewis, parents Charles and Rogania Dunlap, brothers Vaughn, Rex, Fritz and Guy Dunlap and sisters, Esther Knapp, Gay Allen and Sophia Smith.  She was a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ.

She is survived by her daughter Grace Souder and son Bill Lewis both of Alum Creek, grandaughter Tammy Vickers of Alum Creek, grandsons Kenny Lewis of Hurricane and Tony Lewis of Yawkey, 5 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday May 24 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Minister Joseph Watts officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery Alum Creek. Friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home

Sandra Sue Good

Sandra Sue Good, 64, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House after a short battle with cancer.  She was preceded in death by her parents Cecil V. And Melva Coffman Vance and brothers, Michael and Eddie Vance.   She was a former employee of Black Diamond Girl Scout Council and Robin Godfrey Attorney-at-Law, and was very active in the Nitro High School Alumni Reunion.

She is survived by her companion of 30 years: Carl Edward Pauuley; Sons: Tony, Darrin and Steven Good; Step-children: Jody Hensley, Becky Parker, Carl E. Pauley II, and Tina Pauley Roberts; Brothers: John, Pat and Sam Vance; Sisters: Jackie Taylor, Sharon Layne and Terri Vance and many grandchildren and friends

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, May 23, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends will gather from 4 to 6 pm Sunday at the funeral home.

Phyllis Jean Tury Alexander

Phyllis Jean Tury Alexander, a resident of Charleston, West Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, May 15, 2011 after a short illness.  She is the daughter of the late Belva Victoria Cooper, James Tony Tury, and the stepdaughter of Marshall R. Bosher.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Ann Alexander; ex-husband, Frederick Alward Alexander as well as many other family and friends.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 20, 2011 at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 900 Washington Street East, Charleston. Visitation for family and friends at the church on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, with the Eastern Star memorial service at 7:00 pm.  Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek is in care of arrangements.

Carlos E. Graley

 Carlos E Graley, 66, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord on May 11, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. He graduated from Washington District High School and Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston) with a degree in education. He worked for Belle Lines / Smith Transfer for 22 years and then retired from Kanawha County Schools after teaching at McKinley Middle School for 18 years. He motivated and inspired so many students who looked to him as a father figure and encouraged them to complete their education. He truly had a gift as an educator.

He is survived by his wife, Delores (Jean Stowers) Graley; children Greg Graley of Liberty; Carla Graley Finch (Jeff) of St Albans; and Anthony Graley (Patti) of Charleston. His six grandchildren always brightened his day; Mitchell Finch, Amanda Jo Graley, Sarah Finch, Beth Graley, Carson and Sloan Graley.

He is also survived by his mother; Maggie (Wolfe) Graley of Alum Creek and three brothers; Danny Graley (Brenda) of Copperas Cove, Tx; Wayne Graley (Dolley) of Alum Creek; and Harold “Hooks” Graley (Susie) of South Charleston. Brother-in-law Danny Stowers (Elana) of South Charleston, WV.  

He was recently honored along with his brother Hooks and David Gillispie with a special recognition ceremony and banner at George Washington High School for their basketball accomplishments at the now consolidated Washington District High School. He was All State in 1963 with 29 PPG as well as All Kanawha Valley Conference in 1962 & 1963. He also carried his love of sports as he coached youth basketball and coached / umpired baseball games in Alum Creek. He also coached various sports at McKinley Middle School, and served as Athletic Director.   

Carlos had an extreme love for golf and leaves behind many golfing buddies. He also enjoyed fishing at his camp in Pocahontas County. He always had a good joke to tell and was cherished by so many for his sense of humor. Even as his battle with cancer came to a close he stated “send my golf clubs ahead to heaven so they will be there waiting on me”. He will no doubt enjoy his time in heaven where the sun shines every day and the 19th Hole is divine. 

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Mark Moreland, Nurses at Dr. Jogenpolly’s office, and Scott Casdorph, Jennifer Kirsch, Ashley Casto, and Mary Akers with HospiceCare. Our sincerest appreciation also goes out to the many family and friends who have provided endless support during this time. Special thanks to neighbors and friends Jeff Ray and Johnny Myers. 

A celebration of life will be held at 1PM, Saturday, May 14th, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV, with Rev. Thomas Roberts officiating. Entombment will follow at Graceland Cemetery, South Charleston, WV. The family will also receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Friday evening. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carlos Graley Memorial Scholarship c/o Ms. Varney at St Albans High School (304) 722-0212 or Hospice Care (304) 768-8523.

 

Velma Ruth Hancock

Velma Ruth Hancock, 87 of Charleston, born, December 28, 1923 went home to be with the Lord Monday, May 9, 2011.  She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Hancock; parents, Frank and Mattie Miller; brother, Harold Eugene Miller; grandson, Douglas Walls.  She was retired from the Blossom Dairy; attended Mount Tabor Church of God and Woodland Gospel Tabernacle.

She is survived by her sons: Dorris (Violet) Walls of Alum Creek; and Hobie (Jenny) Walls of Charleston; Daughter: Sue (Kermit) Fore of Clendenin; Granddaughters: Benita Godbey and Susie Sanders; Grandsons: Lee (Lori) Walls, Greg (Billie) Walls and John Walls;  Great Granddaughters: Katelyn Godbey; Calli, Kenlie, Mariah, and Kayla Walls, and Jessica Saunders; and Great-Grandsons: Jason and Joshua Walls, and Joshua Ryan; and Sister-in-law: Gail Miller of Maitland, FL

Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Bob Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

 

Virginia Lee Peters

Virginia Lee Peters, 88, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Friday, May 6, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House surrounded by her children.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; daughter, Patricia; parents, Leslie and Ethel Chandler Morris; sisters, Julia Oxley and Margie Lilly; brother, James Morris; grandson, Steven Fouts and son-in-law, John Fouts.  She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

She is survived by Three daughters: Linda Radochio and husband, John of St. Albans,  Betty Edge Yoder and husband, Don of Abbeville, Alabama,  and Sharon Fouts of South Charleston; Four sons: Richard of Lewisburg, Rodney (Reba) of Vidalia, GA, Randall of Alum Creek, and Russell (Linda Gulliam) of Dunbar; 17 Grandchildren; 10 Great grandchildren; 2 Great great grandsons and 2 Step-great grandchildren.

The service will be 8:00 PM Monday, May, 9, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Dave Jones officiating. Friends may call 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Graveside service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek.

The family expresses their sincere gratitude to the staff of Kanawha Hospice and Hubbard Hospice House for their wonderful care.

Edith Vickers Kingrey

Edith Vickers Kingrey, 90, of Alum Creek, formerly of Yawkey went home to be with the Lord Friday, May 6, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House.  She was born in Yawkey on March 30, 1921, the daughter of the late Ross and Flossie Vickers. Edith was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church at Yawkey, where she served as church clerk, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, V.B.S. and Christmas play director for years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Dell Kingrey; sisters, Juanita Moore and Iva Jean Linville.

Surviving sons: James Michael (Sue) and Philip Dell (Dreama) all of Alum Creek; 3 Grandchildren: Scottie, Todd and Kristin Kingrey; and 2 Great Grandchildren: Jamie and Elizabeth Kingrey.

The service will be 11:00 am Monday, May 9, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating. Burial will follow in the May’s Cemetery at Yawkey. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm Sunday, May 8th at the funeral home.  A special thank you to her caregivers: Linda Allen, Kathy Eagle, Pam Phillips, Patty Clendinin, Mary Holstein, Kathy Clendinin, Susie Clendinin and Tracy Eagle.
