Edward Vaughn Nicholas

Edward Vaughn Nicholas, 50, of Alum Creek passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012 at CAMC General after a short illness.

He is survived by his son, Dakota Von Nicholas; mother and step-father, Patricia and Bob Porter of Ashland, KY; sister, Little Star (Melinda) VanScyoc, her husband, Jeff; brother-in-law, Sunny Nunn; special girl, Crystal Moore, who Eddie loved as a daughter, and her son, Caleb; step-brothers, Charles (Karen), John (Wanda), James (Anna) and Scott Porter; three nephews, (Trick) Ricky Davis, Cameron and Matthew Nunn; great nieces, Emily and Sarah; great nephew, Joshua

Funeral service will be 2:00 Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Family and friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Creed Adkins

Creed Adkins, 76, of Charleston passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012, at CAMC Memorial Division after a short illness. Creed was born September 16, 1935, in Lincoln County, the son of the late Spence and Belle Adkins. He was also preceded in death by all of his siblings, June Meadows (1985), Marcella Adkins (2002), Cecil Adkins (2005) and Cline Adkins (2008). Creed was a 1954 graduate of Duval High School. He attended Morris Harvey (UC) College. He served on the Lincoln County Board of Education. At the time of his election, he was the youngest person to serve in this capacity. He retired from the West Virginia Public Service Commission with over 30 years of service.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in South Charleston, where he was a member of the Chancel Choir and the Singing Men.

Creed was a Shriner, a 33 degree Mason. He was a member of the South Charleston Lions Club with over 40 years of perfect attendance. In recognition of his service to the association, he had received numerous awards including being named a Leonard Jarrett Recipient and a Melvin Jones Fellow. He also served as a District Governor, 1983-1984. He was named a Distinguished West Virginian in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years Sally Jo; one Godson, David Greathouse and his wife Megan, their 4 year old twin boys, Max and Henry, of Asheville, NC. He is also survived by one niece Ann (John) Pauley, two nephews, Larry (Diane) Adkins, Karl (Kelli) Adkins, as well as numerous cousins and close friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Harry Duncan, Dr. James Lohan, and Dr. William Harris for the excellent care Creed received during his illness. We would also like to thank the staff at CAMC Memorial for their care and concerns. Your kindness will always be remembered by our family.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm Sunday, January 22, at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Rev. Tom Nolan and the Rev. Jodie Pistore officiating.

Interment will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey

Visitation will be 6:00pm to 8:00pm Saturday, January 21, at the funeral home as well as one hour prior to the service.

Marcel Lee Dunlap

Marcel Lee Dunlap, 85, of Alum Creek went home to the Lord Thursday, January 12, 2012 at home.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church and lifetime member of the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

He was preceded in death by son, Scotty.

Marcel is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma; seven children: Jim (Diana), Roger (Clara), Richard (Margaret), Lisa Dunlap, Betty Bragg, Donna Bragg (Arthur Wilson), and Sandy (Ledford) Turley; three sisters, Sherry Thomas, Ardith Dunlap and Bonnie Roberts; sixteen grandchildren, fifty-two great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Monday, January 16, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastors Mike Kordusky and Russell Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions toward funeral services.

Jewell Maxine McClure Adams

Jewell Maxine McClure Adams, 94, of Yawkey, WV, beloved mother and grandmother, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 , at Genesis Teays Valley.

She was born September 19,1917 in Lincoln County, WV to Sesco and Effie Hale McClure. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleston Adams; children, Danny Adams and Louise Tackett; sons-in-law, Harold Nunn, Stan Zemenick and Ted Tackett and a daughter-in-law, Ann Adams.

Maxine is survived by three daughters, Lucille Zemenick, of Charleston, SC, Jewell (Richard) Belcher and Lahoma Nunn, all of Sod; a son, Harley Adams of Gary, IN; and a daughter-in-law, Lisa Adams of Hurricane, WV.

She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

She was the oldest member of Beech Grove Baptist Church in Yawkey, WV. She enjoyed reading her Bible, tending to her garden and was well known by her grandchildren to be fond of chocolate candy and ice cream.

Funeral services will be 2:00pm Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Mays Cemetery, Yawkey.

Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Howard Eugene Johnson

Howard Eugene Johnson, 87, of Poca, formerly of Sod, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington.

He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force during WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Wars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Freda Hughes Johnson, his parents and five siblings.

Howard is survived by two daughters: Wanda Sue (Rickey) Wade of Yawkey; Lisa Hanson of St. Albans; two sons, Harold (Rhonda) Johnson of Palm Coast, FL; and John Johnson of Poca. Nine grandchildren: Denise Brink, Yvonne Johnson, Chandra Clark, Jason Wade, Jeremy and Michael Johnson, Jessica Klotzbach, Jennifer Snow and Sarah Hanson; and 18 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 3:00 pm Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Dwight Priestley officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. Family and friends will gather from 1 – 3 pm Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Terry Lee Cooper

Terry Lee Cooper, 54, of Hurricane, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at CAMC Teays Valley after a short illness.

He was a member of Labors Local Union 1353 Charleston.

He is survived by his daughter, Maria Gandy, sisters Doris Jean Cooper of Cartersville, GA, Maxine Cooper of Dunkirk, IN, Sandra Cole of Cleveland, OH, Margaret Oxley , Carolyn Cooper , and Eva Lou Cooper

Sherry Louise Thompson

Sherry Louise Thompson, 75, of Emmons entered into rest peacefully Sunday, January 8, 2012 at home.

She was preceded in death by her two sons: Thomas and James Thompson; parents, Omer and Dorothy Payne; sister, Yvonne McClure and husband, Darrell; brother, Johnny Payne and wife, Patricia; brothers-in-law, Paul Lee and Bill Sisson.

She is survived by her daughter, Deana Thompson; son, John Thompson; three Sisters: Charlotte Lee, Betsy (Frank) Johnson, and Selma Sisson. Six grandchildren:

Thomas, Angie, Mike, Christina, Sherry & Jasmine and several great grandchildren

Sherry never knew a stranger, always very happy, giving, never critical but always warm hearted. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Friday, January 13, 2012 at the Emmons Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Kenneth Samms officiating. Burial will follow in Gillispie Cemetery, Emmons. Family and friends will gather Thursday from 6 to 8 pm at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.

 

Dwight Harless

Dwight (Rick) Harless, 58, of Alum Creek went home on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at CAMC-Memorial Division after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Leighton.

He was the original founder of Air Conditioning Design, Inc., and pastor/evangelist in the surrounding area for more than 35 years. He was a man after God’s own heart, and served in the US Army.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carol; daughters Angela Nicole (Steven) Carter, York, SC, and Cheryl (Rodney) Jackson, Folly Beach, SC; Son, Charles David (Lisa) Harless, South Charleston; Preston Dwight Harless at home; stepdaughter, Talisa Burdette, Charleston; mother, Virginia Evelyn Harless of Alum Creek; sisters, Mary (Arthur) Smith, Wickliff, OH, Nora Harless, Charlotte, NC; brothers, Bruce (Debbie) Harless, South Charleston; brothers; Billly (Becky) Harless, Fort Mohave, AZ, Bob (Anissa), Big Chimney; five grandchildren: Cameron, Brook, Daisy, Chase and Blake.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00pm on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Evangelist David Bragg officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston with military graveside rites by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

Family and friends will gather from 6:00 – 8:00pm on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the funeral home.

Clifford Morris McClure

Clifford Morris McClure, 90, of Sumerco was taken home to heaven with angels by his side on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Lincoln Nursing & Rehab Center. Born December 20, 1921 in Lincoln County and was a longtime resident of Sumerco.

He was an operator for Union Carbide with 36 years of service and a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Zulema, also his parents, Charles and Nora McClure, and all of his siblings, Esther, Lillie, Mavis, Albert, Booker, Ellison, Lota, Myrtle, Forest, Mayward, Braxton, and Herbert,

Clifford cherished his family and friends and leaves behind his daughter Vickie and her husband, Charles Runyan of Sod; grandson, Chris Runyan of North Manchester, IN; granddaughter, Lori (Brian) Woodrum of Sod, WV, and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Charlie Woodrum.

He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and friends who loved him dearly.

Clifford was a faithful, loving and devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was always there with a smile on his face to lend a helping hand. He will truly be missed.

A service to celebrate Clifford’s life will be at 1:00pm, Saturday, January 7th at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastors Phil Suiter and Robert ‘Butch’ Leadman officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 will be at Lively Cemetery, Sod.

Family and friends may gather from 6:00 – 8:00pm on Friday, January 6, at Curry Funeral Home.

Macy Brumfield Bell

Macy Brumfield Bell, 94, of Alum Creek, WV, passed from this earth on Monday, January 2, 2012, after a long beautiful life.

Macy was born on December 20, 1917, the daughter of B.W. “Bernie” and Goldie Young Brumfield of Griffithsville in Lincoln County. She was a child of the depression growing up on a farm with 13 other siblings. She graduated from Duval High School where she met and married a handsome young man, Rodney Rexford Bell, and they settled in Alum Creek, Kanawha County, to raise two daughters. In her last years she made her home with daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Doyle Hudson of Alum Creek. As her caregivers, they provided family members with comfort in knowing that she was cared for in her final years.

 Macy was a member of the Oakwood Church of Christ and served the Lord over her many years. She was a true believer in the 4-H program and in her earlier years, she served as a leader of the local 4-H club.

 Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband and 9 siblings: Beulah, Corbett, Cabell, Calvin, “Dyke”, Frank, Gary, Glenna, Bernie, Ralph and James Russel.

 Left to cherish her in their hearts are her two daughters: Jane (Doyle) Hudson of Alum Creek and Judy Cox of Charleston. Macy was blessed with 5 grandchildren: Kathy Holtsclaw of St. Albans; Pamela Bailey (Thomas) of Partlow, VA; Julie Facemire (Lovell) of Elkview, Melinda “Mendy” Cox of South Charleston and Rodney Cox (Jennifer) of Walton. Additionally, she lived to cherish the joys of having five great grandchildren: James Bailey of Partlow, VA; Evan Bailey of Fredericksburg, VA, along with Gwendolyn, Madeline and Joscelyn Cox of Walton. Macy is also survived by four sisters: Eldona Rife, Betty McGraw, Eloise Fishback and Wilma Jean Dolan.

Service will be 11:00 am Friday, January 6, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Minister Jonathan Chaffin officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
