Melvia Hudson

Melvia Magdaline Williams Hudson, 91, of St. Albans, formerly of Atlas Road, South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Teays Valley Assisted Living in Hurricane.

Melvia was born on April 9, 1923 in Olcott, West Virginia to Wallace and Grace Williams.  On January 13, 1942 Melvia married Robert Lee “Bob” Hudson and became a “military wife” for several years while Bob served our country in World War II.  For over 45 years, Bob and Melvia lived at Atlas Road in South Charleston, where they raised a family of eight children and enjoyed their grandchildren before moving to St. Albans. The best memories their grandkids have are of spending time at their house on Atlas Road enjoying countless holiday meals, Sunday suppers, and playing in the woods and fields.  She was one of the most genuine, loving, and caring human beings that God ever created.  Melvia would have given her last penny, her last scrap of food, and the shirt off her back to any one she thought was in need.   She always found the good in everyone and became friends with anyone who had the honor of meeting her.  She retired from the Kanawha County Board of Education as Head Cook at Kenna Elementary in Charleston.  Upon retirement, Bob and Melvia spent many weeks at a time throughout the year at their camp in Dunmore, Pocahontas County, until missing their grandchildren and great grandchildren would get the best of them and they would have to make a trip home.  Melvia attended Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene for many years.

In addition to her parents, Melvia was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Bob, on November 11, 2008.  She was also preceded in death by all of her siblings, brothers, Stanley, Rondal, and Carl Williams and sisters, Arlene Harrison, Evelyn Jackson, Gloria Dodd, and Louise Roberts Curry;  son, Gary Hudson;  grandson, Dennis Hudson and  great grandson, Logan Moore.  She surely had a happy reunion with them all!

Melvia is survived by her children, Bob and Sue Hudson of Davis Creek,  Jim and Charla Hudson of South Charleston, Carol and Greg Abbott of Alum Creek,  Chuck and Joyce Hudson of South Charleston, Linda and Jerry Taylor of St. Albans,  Mark and Robin Hudson of St. Albans, and Kevin and Shayna Hudson of Kenna. Melvia was blessed to be survived by 22 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren; with one additional great grandson due any day.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend and will be deeply missed by the many who loved her.  She was the personification of Proverbs 31:28:  “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”

The family would like to thank Dr. Vinodrai Lakhani and his staff for the wonderful care that he provided Melvia over the years.

Service will be 1:00 PM Monday March 2 ,2015 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Worship Pastor Nichole Stewart officiating. Entombment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum, South Charleston. Family and friends will gather from 4 to 6 pm Sunday at the funeral home.
