Vernard McCormick

Vernard “Bernie” McCormick, 84 of Sod, formerly of Woodville, left this world to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 28, 2015 at Valley Health Center in Spring Hill.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Olive Neal McCormick.  He is survived by his sister, Sussie McCormick Pauley; his three sisters in law, Nancy M. McCormick, Peggy McCormick and Madeline McCormick; and his fourteen nieces and nephews.

It was Vernard’s request that there would be no services.  His final resting place will be at Pauley Family Cemetery in Joe’s Creek, WV.

 

Maxine E. Pistoria

Maxine E. Pistoria, 95, of So. Charleston, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Golden Living Riverside, at St. Albans after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Pistoria, daughter Shirley Turley and granddaughter Lori Neely.

She is survived by: her grand daughters, Kathy Bates of St. Albans, Tammy Dye (Bobby) and LaDonna Murphy (David) of So. Charleston, 13 great grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren, 2 great-great-great grandchildren and brother Charles Turley of Ohio.

There will be no services.

Madison Lynn and Luke Preston Stanley

Madison Lynn Stanley and Luke Preston Stanley, infant twins of Jason & Melinda Stanley of Tornado, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 13, 2015.

They are survived by maternal grandmother: Marilyn Preston, maternal great -grandmother, Linda Hager, paternal grandparents, Lonnie and Susie Stanley and uncle, Chris Preston.

There will be no services.

 

Paul Griffith

Paul GriffithPaul Phillip Griffith, 78, of McCorkle went home to the Lord, Monday August 17, 2015 at home after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cornes and Belva Griffith, wife Vercie, sisters Wanda Brogan and Thelma Gillenwater.

He was a retired construction worker an Army Veteran of the Korean War and a Member of McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his brothers; Frank Griffith of Sod and Butch Griffith of Alum Creek,

Service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday August 19, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors Frank Chapman and Ron Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle.

Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

George Edward Hess

George Hess And wifeGeorge Edward Hess, 91, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Teays Valley Center in Hurricane.

He  retired from Union Carbide in South Charleston.  George was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee.  He served in the Army during WWII and fought in 5 major battles.  He was also  co-owner operator of Hess’s  Gulf in Alum Creek and could be found there when he wasn’t in Canada fishing.  He was a member of the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary Alice; parents, Charles Edward and Etha Lee Hess; brothers, Freddie, James, Charles, Eugene and Kenneth.

He is survived by his brother, Joe (Eloise) Hess; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends who will greatly miss him.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor’s Dwight McClure and Dorris Walls officiating.  Entombment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Ronald Stephen (Graley) Sampson

Ronald SampsonRonald Stephen (Graley) Sampson, born Feb. 12, 1977 passed from this life on August 11, 2015 at home.  Ronnie was a good father to his 3 children and 1 stepson.  Ronnie is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Donald Henry Smith, who cherished the ground he walked on.  Paternal grandfather John Graley, paternal grandparents William O. & Betty Sampson, and James & Phyllis Starcher.

He is survived by one son, Jacob Fields, two daughters, Kyrah Jade and Braelyn Rain Sampson and their mother Autumn Mosteller;  stepson, Jordan Stone; father, Ronald Graley, mother and stepdad, Vanessa and James Starcher, two brothers Derek and Travis Sampson and half-sister, Jessika Graley; one stepbrother James Starcher; one step-sister, Jessica (Joey) Beane and   maternal grandmother, Loraine Smith. Also survived by a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends who all love and miss him greatly.

Service will be 5:30pm Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Dan McCormick officiating.   Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek.

Jennifer Denice Hensley

Jennifer D. HensleyJennifer Denice Hensley, 52, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, after a sudden illness.

She graduated Magna Cum Laude from WVSU,  fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher.  She was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi and  Pinnacle Honor Societies.  Jennifer was  a teacher for Kanawha County Schools.  She had also worked at United Talent, Steptoe and Johnson, as well as several other businesses.  She  also  graduated from WV Junior College.

Jennifer was  preceded in death by her mother, Lucy Holstein-Hensley; brother-in-law, Jim Holstein; and lifelong friend, Norris Dunlap.

She is survived by her fiancé Victor Weigand; father, Harold Hensley; sisters, Joan Cecil (Gene) and Tamara Holstein; nieces, Stephanie Dunlap (Kevin), Shannon Riffe (Scott), Olivia Holstein, and Jilyian Riffe;  and nephew, Kevin Dunlap, Jr.  Jennifer also leaves behind many close friends and cousins. She was a kind and caring person, and a blessing to all who knew her.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

 

Naomi Kathleen Pauley

Naomi PauleyNaomi Kathleen Pauley of Sod,  known by her friends as “Aunt Kat”  was carried away by angels at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston Friday,  August 7, 2015 at the age of 91 years 5 months and 3 days after a long illness with her family by her side to be forever with the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Meddie and Mary Graley; brothers, Meddie Jr. and Charles “Chuck” Graley.

Kat was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.  She  loved Jesus, going to church, her children, grandchildren,  great grandchildren and her Christian life and family.

She was a member of the greatest generation and worked at the war factory in Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 19.

Kat is survived by her husband, Van Buren “Jr.” ; daughters, Phyllis Dunlap (Buddy) of Sod, and Kathy Buckland (Bill) of South Charleston; son, Van E. Pauley (Pratoon) of Sod; brother, Bobby Graley, of NC; sister, Betty Dunlap (Donald) of Sumerco; grandsons, Cameron (Cindy)  Dunlap, Billy Buckland,  Paul (Amanda) Buckland and Bobby Dawson; great grandchildren, Ethan, Evan, Isaiah, Elijah, Jaydan and Jase; and great granddaughter, Naomi, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral service will be 4:00PM Monday, August 10, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors David Cooper, Ron Scott and Butch Brogan officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Hubbard Hospice House and there in home caregivers.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., Charleston, WV 25387-2536.

Sylvia Jane McCormick Watts

Sylvia WattsSylvia Jane McCormick Watts, 94, of Sumerco, passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, July 21,2015 at Hubbard Hospice West in South Charleston.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; parents, Maywood and Edith McCormick; sisters, Goldie Vanzant, Geneva Woodall and Glada Edwards; and brothers, Roy, Clifford, Marion, Desker, Ohley and Archie McCormick.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Connie (Dan) Dooley of Sumerco, Louis (Teresa) Watts of Sumerco and Gary Watts of Alum Creek; by her grandchildren and their spouses, Danny (Ligeia) Dooley of Griffithsville, Megan (Thomas) Hanson of Sumerco, Joseph (Amie) Watts of Alum Creek, Luke (Sarah) Dooley of Sellersburg, IN, and Sarah (Keith) Cole of St. Albans; by great grandchildren, Jace and Levi Watts, Kristopher and Jacob Hanson and Cooper Dooley; by her sister, Judith Vickers of Kernersville, NC; and by many nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was a faithful member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ.  She was a nurturer of many, a humble and quiet servant.

Friends may visit the family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday July 24, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Minister Richard Runyan officiating.  Burial will be in the Watts Family Cemetery at Sumerco.

In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in her name to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV  25387-2536 or to Latin American Mission, PO Box 2330, Valdosta, GA  31604-2330.

Loberta Faye McKinney

 Loberta McKinneyLoberta McKinney 2Loberta Faye McKinney, 85, of Sod, went home Sunday, July 19, 2015 to be with the Lord and her son, Larry.

She was retired assistant manager for Bank of America in Ridgecrest, CA, and a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Sod.  She loved traveling and camping with her husband of 66 years, Jerry McKinney.

She is also survived by her children, Sharon (Ron) Allen and Wayne (Rhonda) McKinney; four grandchildren, Chad (Alisha) McKinney, Brad (Molinda) McKinney, Ron (Elisa) Allen, Jr., and Russell Allen; five great-grandchildren, Aiden, Emma, Nicole and Eli McKinney and Jeff Allen; and sister, Imogene Ingram.

Memorial Service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July  25th at Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church,  1432 Midway Road, Sod, WV  with Pastor Clyde Gwin officiating.  A private burial will be at a later date at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar, WV.
