Mr. David L. “Butch” Griffith, 70, of Alum Creek, passed away suddenly after a short illness at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, on Tuesday, February 2, 2016.
Butch was born April 4, 1945 in Madison, West Virginia, to the late Cornes and Belva Dunlap Griffith. He was the youngest of six siblings. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Avis and Paul Griffith of McCorkle, WV and his sisters, Thelma Gillenwater of Griffithsville, WV and Wanda Brogan from Virginia.
He was a Christian and a member of the Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Alum Creek. Butch was a proud graduate of Duval High School, Griffithsville, WV. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He retired from Pratt Mining Company and later finished his working life as Assistant DOH Road Supervisor for Lincoln County. He loved to hunt and fish and really enjoyed camping throughout his life with his family and friends. He was a big fan of the WVU Mountaineers and watched every football and basketball game on television, always searching for his family members that were in attendance. Butch never knew a stranger and took great pride in helping others. He liked to hang out with all his gang at Hess Garage in Alum Creek, swapping big tales about fish, football and politics. He mostly enjoyed times with his wife, kids and grandkids.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of over 50 years, Gail (Chandler) Griffith of Alum Creek and their children and grandchildren; son, Michael (Kathy) Griffith and grandsons, Jack and Frederick Powers all of Scott Depot, WV; son, Darren (Jessica) Griffith and grandchildren, Madison and AJ Griffith of Sod; daughter, Lisa (Denzil) Dunlap and grandchildren, Austin Gillenwater at WVU, Michaela Gillenwater and Brad Lilly all of Charleston. Also surviving is his daughter, Stephanie (Kevin) Dunlap and grandson, Kevin Lewis Dunlap of Alum Creek. Butch is also survived by his brother, Frankie (Norma Jean) Griffith of McCorkle and leaves a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends who were some of his favorite people.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to Dr. Yousef for the care and friendship shown since 1994. Butch will truly be missed by his family and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be given in the memory of Butch Griffith to the Independent Missionary Baptist Church, Post Office Box 65, Alum Creek, West Virginia 25003.
