Lowell Wayne Holeston

Lowell Wayne Holeston, 58, of Yawkey passed away Monday, July 15, 2024, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was a retired police officer from the Belle Police Department but also worked in Madison, Hamlin, and Danville. He was an avid music fan and a talented guitarist, playing at several local establishments.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell Dean and Katherine Kinder Holeston.

He is survived by children, Shane Holeston and Lacey Shaffer; sisters, Diana (Allen) Spears and Karen (Darell) Stephens; grandson, Keaton Holeston; best friends, Whitey Sutphin and Russel Dunlap; and nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm, Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco. Friends and family will gather 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Curry Funeral Home, PO Box 9, Alum Creek, WV to help offset the funeral cost.

Carolyn Lee Songer

Carolyn Lee Songer, 77, of Charleston, passed away Monday, July 8, 2024, at Select Specialty Hospital, Charleston.

She was a graduate of Charleston High School. She retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital as the lead medical stenographer.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Harrison Songer, Jr.; daughter, Betty Lee Songer; son, Frederick Harrison Songer, III; brother, Harold Taylor; sisters, Dorothy Mae Taylor and Jean Taylor.

She is survived by son, Donald (Stacey) Songer; grandchildren, Katelyn Lowe, Austin Lowe, and Ciara Songer (Daniel Jones); great grandchildren, Brantlee Clay Jones, Marlea Rae Jones, and Dante’ Michael Spratt, several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Graveside service will be 9:00am, Friday, July 19, 2024, at Songer Cemetery, South Charleston.

Gilbert Pauley

Gilbert Pauley, 91, of Ridgeview, WV went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at his home surrounded by family after a short illness.

He was born in Fork Creek, WV, son of the late Jess & Esta Pauley. He was a member of Dartmont Freewill Baptist. He retired from Valley Camp Coal Company and was a member of Laborer’s Local 1353 and UMWA Local 340.

Gilbert loved to hunt, garden, and can things from that garden. He was famous for his Sunday biscuits and cornbread.

He was preceded in death by is wife, Mabel Pauley; brothers, Freeman Pauley, Raymond Pauley, and Delbert Pauley; sister, Trilby Williams.

Survivors include his sons, Gary (Nada) Pauley and Keith (Tracia) Pauley; daughter, Patricia McAdams; 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends whom he loved dearly.

Funeral services will be 11:00am, Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Gibson officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8, Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Pine Grove, WV.

Donald Glen Petry

Donald Glen Petry, 87, of Kenna, West Virginia left this life to be with the Lord on July 13, 2024.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Goldie and Glen Petry, his sisters, Margaret and Joanne and his brother, Bill.

He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Joyce Petry, his daughters, Pam White (Robert), Vicki Lilly (Greg) and bonus daughters, Sally Bailey and Kathy Blades (Alan). Grandchildren left to mourn his passing are Emily Gibson (James), Bill White, Brooke Bailey, Kacie Clark, and Chase Clark and five great grandchildren, also brother-in-law, Darrell Matheny (Margie). All of whom he loved very much.

As a young man, Don joined the Navy where he spent parts of his military time at the South Pole.  Throughout his lifetime he was a hunter and fisherman and enjoyed any time he could spend on the water or in the woods.  He retired from the Kroger Company in 1997 after driving for them for 25 years.  During retirement, Don spent much time camping and fishing.  He spent many winters in Florida in order to escape the West Virginia cold.

Don loved being around people.  He loved a good joke.  He had a song in his heart.

He will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 1:00pm with Pastor Steve Berkhouse officiating.  Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation one hour before the service.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Barbara Lynn Armstrong

Barbara Lynn Armstrong, 72, of Sod passed away Thursday, July 11, 2024, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Barbara was an in-home caregiver.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Boyd and Fern Loftis Woodrum; sisters, Betty and Kay; brothers, Keith and Joey.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jimmy Armstrong; sons, Dale (Joyce) and Bobby (Phyllis); brothers, Bobby, Jeff, and Chris Woodrum; grandchildren, D.J. (Kaitlyn) and Josh (Caitlan); great grandchildren, A.J., Bentley, Bradon, Hayden, and Bailey Armstrong and Bentley Pauley.

Graveside service will be at 2:00, Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Miller Cemetery on Ely with Pastor Aaron Graley officiating.

Willie M. Harlow

Willie M. Harlow, 88, of Nitro West Virginia, passed away on July 8, 2024, at Genesis Health Care Center, Dunbar, WV after a long illness.

Willie was born on August 15, 1936, to George William and Vena Holcomb Harlow in Summersville WV. He was a member of Ten-Up Ministries of St. Albans WV. He was a member and retired from the WV Laborers Union #1363. He served 17 years with the WV National Guard 150th Armored Cavalry. While on Active Duty, he served his country during the Berlin Crisis and Cuban Missile Crisis.

He is survived by brother, James Harlow (Linda) of Monroe, Ohio; sister, Gaye Matthews of Buffalo WV, and a host of nieces and nephews. Willie was preceded in death by sisters, Helen Vaughn, Eleanor Joyner and brother, Oliver Harlow.

Services will be 2:00pm, Monday, July 15, 2024, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV with Pastor Leroy Blacken officiating. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial of ashes will be at a later date at Harlow Cemetery, Summersville.

Phyllis Evelyn Griffith

Phyllis Evelyn (“Peg”) Griffith, 92, of Alum Creek, WV, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Dunbar Center where she resided for the last year.

Phyllis was born on September 9, 1931, to James Kenneth and Bremen Griffith. She graduated from Washington District High School in 1949 and was the school secretary in 1950.

She was known for her loyalty to friends and willingness to help anyone who needed assistance. She was quick to help the poor, and others, navigate through the legal system.

During her career, Phyllis worked for, and had a lifelong friendship, with Governor Cecil Underwood. During his first term in office, she worked in the Probation and Parole Department, often crossing the hall to get the Governor’s signature on extradition orders. Through her ability and knowledge of the system, she became integral in working for the Governor’s office, often being called on to receive and complete work for the Governor. After leaving the State House, she worked with the Director of the Medical Dispensary at Union Carbide.

Upon her retirement, she joined the “Old Timers Group” from Carbide. Her last professional position was in the Prosecutor’s Office, working with six prosecutors: Charlie Walker, Larry Winters, Mike Rourke, Jim Stuckey, Pat Casey, and Charlie King. Charlie King was a lifelong personal friend. Throughout her life, she loved the West Virginia State Police. For many years, she has been an Honorary Member of the West Virginia State Troopers Association.

In her retirement years, she became well-known in “quilting” circles. In addition to her work at Cabin Creek Quilters, she had two special friends, Gladys Thomas and Nora Lipscomb, who assisted her in creating some of the most beautiful quilts in West Virginia. These quilts were often displayed at the Cultural Center in Charleston. During a number of “quilt-hops”, she and her sisters visited almost all the fabric stores between Charleston and Morgantown.

Phyllis also dedicated many hours contributing to community activities, including volunteering with the American Red Cross and with local political events.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, J.K. and Bremen Griffith, her son Jimmy, her siblings: Betty J. Riling (Bob), Jewell Haddad (Phil), Faye G. Yerrid, Kenny Griffith (Anne Thaxton), Patty G. Dimock (Don), Jeanette G. Rieck (Bob), Douglas MacArthur Griffith, and her nieces and nephew: Susan Riling, Cindy Dimock, Leslie Haddad, and Kevin Griffith.

She is survived by two of her ten siblings: Carley Jo Means (Dale) of Severna Park, MD, and Jack G. Griffith (Loxley) of Denton, Texas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews: Richard Riling (Ohio), Katrina Riling (Charleston, WV), David Haddad (Tennessee), Janet Lynn Claus (Texas), Julie Ann Boehm (Louisiana), Michael Griffith (Texas), Steven Yerrid (Florida), Matt Dimock (Massachusetts), Susan Dimock (Massachusetts), Sandy Dimock (Wisconsin), Derek Rieck (Pennsylvania), Merlin Means (Maryland), Amy Lutz (Florida), Cody Lilley (North Carolina), and Jason Griffith (Charleston, WV).

Of the fifty plus grandchildren of Albert Griffith (1856-1933 of Olcott, WV), Phyllis was one of the last four surviving descendants. Carley Jo Means, Jack Griffith, and Hollis Griffith are the remaining three survivors.

Friends will gather 6:00 – 8:00pm Monday, July 15, 2024, at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service.

Crystal Lynn Lovejoy

Crystal Lynn Lovejoy, 51, of Sod, WV, gained her beautiful wings on Saturday, July 6, 2024, after a long courageous battle of pulmonary fibrosis. Crystal gave her life to the Lord on July 1, 2024.

Crystal was preceded in death by her grandfather, Jim Miller, grandmother, Brookie Miller, sisters, Brookie Terlikowski, Heather “Nikki” Adkins, Sherri Richmond and Stephanie Adkins, also her father, Pete Adkins, great-aunt and uncle, Marge & Eugene Miller.

She was a 1991 graduate of Duval High School.

Crystal is survived by her life long soul mate of 16 years, and fiancé Ronnie Ray Loftis, her two children that she was so proud of, Johnathon Ryan Lovejoy and Kendra Rachelle Lovejoy of Griffithsville, WV. She is also survived by three grandchildren whom she loved and cherished and was affectionately called “NaNa” – Brooklyn Marie Bowling (age 11) and twins, Madilyn Renee Bowling and Sofia Grace Bowling (ages 5).

She is also survived by her sisters, Kerri Wood and Katrina Miller, aunt, Sandy (Bo) Dunlap and many nieces and nephews. Crystal would want to include her special close friends, Janice Lovejoy, Liz Adams, Tonya Justice and Janet Davis.

We would like to give a special thank you to the Providers of the Pulmonary Associates Team and the countless nurses who passionately took care of Crystal on CAMC 5 Front & Hospice Care.

Time was cut short – The things she wanted to do and the love she had to give!

Deloris Jean Turley

Deloris Jean Turley, 88, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Jean attended McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Turley; parents, Thomas and Sadie Blankenship Waldron; grandson, Bobby Fields; and daughter, Beverly Hobbs.

Jean is survived by her daughters, Debbie (C.W.) Sigman and Paula (Kenneth) Jones; 5 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 1 great great granddaughter.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm, Sunday, July 7, 2024, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV with Pastors Dwight Priestley and Isaiah Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Virginia “Gina” Krebs, 84, of Elkview passed away Monday, July 1, 2024, at CAMC General Hospital, Charleston.

Gina loved playing poker and machines, cooking, and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Macil Turley Perdue; sister, Laura Sigmon; and brother, Jim Perdue.

Gina is survived by her husband of 38 years, Brian Krebs; children, Yuvonne (Chad) Brown, Tim (Natalie) Strickland, Leo Strickland, Pam Good, Roger Strickland, Angel (Eddie Cantley) Knapp, and Davy (Dawn) Strickland; grandchildren, Crystal, Misha, Paul, James, Michael, Chadd, Dillon, Diamond, Melody, Christian, Krissy, Amanda, Allison, Travis, Lexi, Ethan, Roxanna, Logan, Britany, Shana, Chelsie, T.J, Jack, Chloe, Sabryna; 31 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren; sister, Brenda Miller; and brother, Ricky (Ellen) Perdue.
