Rev. James E. “Jim” Waldron

Rev. James E. “Jim” Waldron, 88, of Elkview, WV, formerly of Alum Creek went to his heavenly home and the presence of his Lord on Thursday, September 12, 2019.

Jim was born on November 28, 1930 in Alum Creek. He joined the U. S. Army in 1949 and served in the Korean War in 1950-51. Jim married Rachel Faye Pauley in October, 1951 and they were married for almost 68 years. He worked for Union Carbide and the Plumbers, Pipefitters Local #625. His life was changed in 1976 when by God’s grace he put his faith for salvation in Jesus Christ. He gave his life to preach and proclaim the Gospel. He served as a pastor in several churches and never grew tired of sharing the good news of Jesus. He and his wife, Rachel, attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Elkview. Jim’s joy in the Lord touched many, many people.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Pastor Manuel and Hallie Peters Waldron, an infant sister, Rachel Genivee, and his brother, Charles.

He is survived by his dear wife, Rachel; son, Tim (Cheryl) of Iowa city, Iowa; daughter Judy (Dave) Atkins of Elkview; seven (7) grandchildren and fourteen (14) great-grandchidren; brother, David (Shirley) of Spring Hill, and sister, Barbara Fitzwater of Chester, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 16, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastors Tim Waldron, Frank Chapman, Lee Swor and Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25387-2536.

James Eugene Hughes

James Eugene Hughes, 65, of Sod, WV, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at home.

Eugene retired from Hobet Mines and was a member of the UMWA Local #2286.

He was predeceased by his father, Jim; and brothers, Randy and Kevin Hughes.

Eugene is survived by his mother, Naomi Hughes; wife of 47 years, Pamela Breedlove Hughes; daughters, Nicole Ann Hudson (Phillip) and Amber Lizette Hughes (Jeremy Jones); sons, Christopher Gene and Jacob Eugene Hughes; grandchildren, Timothy Hudson, Blake (Kasey) Hudson, Paige Hughes, Nevaeh Wood, Dakota Wood and Tanner Hughes; great grandchildren, Brennen and Carsynn Hudson; and sisters, Karen Dunlap and Connie Graley. Eugene is also survived by his brothers-in-law that he loved dearly.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 14, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating. Burial will be at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey at a later date.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Ricky Lee Stewart

Ricky Lee Stewart, 52, of Alum Creek, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 8, 2019, after an ATV accident.

He was employed at Taylor Made Home Improvements and formerly employed at K & M Builders. Ricky was a member of the Carpenters Local #439. He was a longtime SAGBL youth basketball coach of the Alum Creek Cubs and also helped with the girls softball in the Mountaineer League.  He was a former employee of Atlas Scaffolding, South Charleston.

Ricky is survived by his parents, Junior and Wanda Stewart; his wife of 27 years, Beth Meickles Stewart; daughters, Kimberly Pauley (Michael), Tiffany Stewart ( Mitchell Webb), Brittany Stewart and Sara Beth Stewart; grandsons, Andrew, Waylon, Hayden, Hunter and Isaiah; brother, Joe Stewart (Stephanie), sisters, Cindy Gibson (Keith), Kathy Stewart, and Carrie Taylor (Jamie); many nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, Jim Cowie and the crew at Suzy’s where he ate breakfast every morning.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 13, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman and Chris Vannatter officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In Ricky’s memory, please wear WVU clothing and hats are welcome.

Averrill Boyd McClure

Averrill Boyd McClure, born May 28, 1946, of Alkol, WV, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, September 5, 2019, at the age of 73.

He was a member of the Summit Ridge Community Church in Sumerco. He was a graduate of Duval High School Class of 1964. Averrill was a Veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in Korea with the 1st Missile Battalion 42nd Field Artillery Firing Platoon of B-Battery along the DMZ. He retired as a Foreman with 36 years in the Coal Industry and was a member of the UMWA. Averrill was also a member of the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 acting as Post Commander since 2016.

Averrill was predeceased by his parents, Boyd and Barbara McClure; brothers, Randy and Cecil “Bill” McClure; father and mother-in-law, Charles “Boots” and Lucille Tully; and brother-in-law, Wayne Roberts.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gale; sons, Jason McClure (Chloe) and Denny (Jaime) Stone; twin daughters, Rachel and Rochelle Foster; grandchildren, Kodie, Marlee, Mia, Landon, Roman and Jayden; brothers, Alton (Barbara Mae), Buddy (Abby), and Mickey; sisters, Helen Roberts, Chlo (Larry) Booth, Marian (Mack) Stone, Carolyn (Chuck) Adkins and Teresa (Jerome) Adkins; sisters-in-law, Sandra, Barbara Ann and Martha McClure.  Averrill will be greatly missed by all of his nieces, nephews, church family, Army buddies and many friends.   We will  miss his precious smile and humble heart.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Evangelist Brandon McClure, Pastor Kevin Workman, Evangelist Jonny Slazo, and Pastor Jeff Mosteller officiating. Burial will follow at the McClure Family Cemetery in Alkol with military gravesite rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

There are so many wonderful things that can be said about Averrill, yet none would do him justice. He adored his family. He loved his country, but most importantly he was a godly man and lived a great example of a Christian life. We will miss him more than we could ever express, but we are comforted in knowing that he is now in the arms of the one he loved most.

Wilburn “Fats” Cobb

Wilburn “Fats” Cobb, 72 years old, of Tornado, WV, faded away to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, from a long illness at Hubbard Hospice House-West, South Charleston. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross & Zona Moore Cobb and brother, Gary Wade Cobb.

He was a retired roofer and loved farming and coon hunting.

He leaves behind his devoted best friend and wife of 43 years, Linda Sowards Cobb, son, Billie Joe Spears, Jr., and daughter-in-law, Cindy Spears, and daughter, Sheila M. Cox, all of Alum Creek WV. He is also survived by his grandsons, James Ray Cox and William Joseph Spears, granddaughters, Robyn Elizabeth Cox and Hannah Marie Spears, brothers, Ross “Sam” Cobb and Curtis Cobb, sister, Dorothy Trimble and several nieces and nephews he dearly loved.

Graveside service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7th at 11:00 a.m. at Cobb Cemetery, 467 Island Creek Road, Tornado, WV, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.

The family would like to thank all the Hospice Staff for all their kindness and help, and a special thank you to Richard, Angel, Robyn,Whittney and everyone helping to prepare the gravesite.

Charles Terry “Butch” Slappe, 70, of Cookeville, TN, formerly of Charleston, WV, went home to the Lord on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville, TN.

Butch was a Christian and a graduate of the Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  He served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Norman and Nina Catherine Bowen Slappe.

The committal service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum, 100 Graceland Circle, Charleston, West Virginia.

Jimmy Dale Miller

Jimmy Dale Miller, 88, of South Charleston, WV, went home Monday, August 26, 2019 at Hubbard Hospice West in South Charleston.

He was a Welltender for Columbia Gas Transmissions. Jimmy attended Bible Center Church and was a member of the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge #71.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Dulcie Miller; brothers, Mancel “Dave” and Victor “Flib” Miller; and sisters, Marie Thompson, Dorothy Meadows and Jane Weaver.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Carrie “Tiny” Miller; son, Bryant Miller; daughter, Gina Miller; granddaughter, Elizabeth “Trixie” Miller; sister Nadean Dent of Lexington, KY; brother, Larry Miller of York, SC; and special friend Tom Davis.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 30, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Roe Smith and Dan Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge No. 71. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

The family would like to express a special thank you to neighbors, Rick & Rachel Kirkendall, Scott & Laura Straley, Cory Penn and Chuck Knapp, caregiver Delores Day, and to the staff at hospice.

James Eric Vickers

James Eric Vickers, 52, of Alkol, WV, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2019 at home.

He was a 1985 graduate of Duval High School. James was a U. S. Army Veteran serving in  the Special Forces during Desert Storm and the Gulf War. He was a devoted father, son, brother and friend.

James was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Lee Vickers.

He is survived by his mother, Margaret Wade Vickers; sons, Austen Ray Vickers of Charleson, SC and Riley Joseph Vickers of Ripley, WV; daughters, Jamie Nichole Vickers and Erica Dawn Vickers both of Alkol, WV; brother, Jeffrey Lee Vickers (Debbie) of Pawleys Island, SC; and sister, Monica (Joey) Linville of Alkol, WV; and great aunt, Wynoka Kelley.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 26, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Geraldine Marker

Geraldine Marker, 78, of Sumerco, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 19, 2019, at home surrounded by love.
She was the daughter of the late Randall and Macil Gillenwater of Sumerco.
Geraldine was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend. She was as sweet as the flowers she loved and touched many lives. She enjoyed life in all seasons and going to the Amish Country with her family. Geraldine will be greatly missed, but we will be together again in Heaven one day. Oh, what a day that will be!
She retired from the U. S. Postal Service with 25 years service at the Sumerco Post Office. She was an active member of the McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church, which she dearly loved.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jackie; siblings, Patty Justice and Lloyd Gillenwater.
Geraldine is survived by daughters, Libby (Ronnie) Pauley and Denise (Davy) Pauley; brother, David Gillenwater; sister, Bonnie Clark; grandsons, Wes and Brad Pauley and granddaughters, Chantel (Blake) Tudor and Kaylee Pauley; and many other family and friends.
Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Isaiah Hatfield and Johm Gorrell officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery in Sod.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
We would like to express a special thank you to our family, friends, and church family for their prayers, food, visits, and many cards during her illness. The staff at HospiceCare of Charleston was a blessing and greatly appreciated.

Amy Marie Combs

Amy Marie Combs, 39, of Charleston, WV, went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with melanoma on Thursday, August 15, 2019, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Dale Snodgrass and Andy Kessock;  and step-sister, Kara Stowers.

Amy was a member of Bible Center Church and a physician’s assistant for Drs. Dewitt & Gibson in Spring Hill.

She is survived by her loving husband of 16 years, Chris; son, Andrew;  mother and step-father, Beth & Lawrence Nesselrodt; brother,  Danah (Megan) Mallory and their daughters, Macy and Lilly who dearly loved their Aunt Sue Sue; and grandparents, Lillian Snodgrass and Janet Kessock.  Amy is also survived by her father and step-mother, Bob & Kim Kessock; step-sister,  Jessica Stowers and her son, Carson;  father-in-law & mother-in-law,  Bert & Sharon Combs;  sister-in-law,  Michelle (Jason) Leaor and their daughter Emily;  and many other family members, friends and patients who will greatly miss Amy.

Service will be 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 18, 2019, at Bible Center Church, 100 Bible Center Dr., Charleston, WV, with Pastors Matt Friend and Chuck Goddard officiating.  Family and friends will gather two hours prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 19, at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.
