Gary Ray Jenkins, 63, Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, April 9, 2016, after a long illness.
Son of the late Howard R. and Wilma Bender Jenkins of St. Albans. He was also preceded in death by his brother David W. Jenkins, maternal grandparents Carl and Lora Bender, paternal grandparents John and Mary Jenkins, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Gary was a member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, a 1969 graduate of St. Albans High School and retired from Patrick Street K-Mart after 18 years of service.
He is survived by son, Franklin R. Jenkins, Alum Creek, sister, Wanda Jenkins, St. Albans, several aunts, an uncle and many cousins and friends.
Although raised in the city Gary preferred the quiet and peaceful country life. He spent many years enjoying farming in Red House and Alum Creek. He loved caring for animals, gardening, and working on cars, tractors and other equipment. He especially loved making and eating his homemade Concord grape jelly.
Franklin and Wanda sincerely appreciate all the prayers, cards, phone calls and visits providing emotional support throughout Gary’s illness. Words cannot express how grateful we will always be for Hospice Care, especially, Melanie, Sallie, Libby, Marilyn and Ashley. They allowed Gary to rest in the comfort of his own home. Special thanks also to countless family members including Jeannette Jenkins, Jennifer Bennett, Gerald and Barb Jenkins, our church family, neighbors, and special friends Robert and Sue Johnson for daily expressions of love and support.
Services will be 1:00pm Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Curry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Keith George officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. The family would like to encourage everyone to join them for a meal at Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek, following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25387-2536 or to a charity of your choice.
