Mae Deloris Dunlap

Mae Deloris Dunlap, 84, of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 10, 2021, at the home of her son Calvin.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Cline, parents, Monroe & Gertie Gillispie, sisters, Betty, Emmogene, Martha, and Magdaline, brothers, Glen and Ellsworth Gillispie, and grandson, Taylor Dunlap.

She is survived by her son, Calvin Dunlap (Lana), daughter, Donna (Bob) Hill, five grandchildren, Jason, Curtis, April, Shauna & Ashley, and six great-grandchildren, Jayden, Kaylor, Adria, Garrett, Kaila and Kameron.

She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Shirley Smith, Cheryl Hughes, Pamela McGilton, Lorraine Gillispie, brothers-in-law, Charles Dunlap and Dempsey Dunlap Lacy and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was a Christian.

The Family wants to give a special thank you to Dignity Hospice and Lana Allen for their loving care of Mom.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 12, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastors, Ernie Vance, Clint Craddock, and Todd Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Dennis L. Burdette, Jr.

Dennis L. Burdette, 49, of South Charleston, passed away Friday, October 8, 2021, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kathy Steele and son, Micah Burdette.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Michelle; children, Adrian Burdette, Isaac Burdette, Marissa Banks; father and stepmother, Dennis & Cynthia Burdette; sister, Rachel Mace; brother, Christopher Burdette; grandson, Kyler Josiah Burdette.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Roger Dean Holley

Roger Dean Holley of Alkol, passed away at home on October 7, 2021, at the age of 77. Born June 25, 1944, he grew up in Alkol.

He attended Woodville Grade School and Scott High School graduating in 1963. He worked summers during high school cutting gas right of ways for Libby Owens. After graduating, he went to work for Fred Black Sr. at his business in Danville. He started working as a Receiving Clerk in 1966 for a wholesale grocer called The Creasey Company located in Kenova. He worked there 21 years until they went out of business and started working at Sams Club in 1988, where he retired in 2008.

Roger was saved in April of 1981 at a revival held by evangelist Bud

Culbertson at Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Alkol. He attended church regularly from then until his recent health issues. He served at different times as the Sunday School Superintendent, was a Sunday School teacher several years and a member of the church choir. In a testimony in the 1990’s, Roger once said, “There’s two people I want to see when I get to Heaven and that’s Tucker Holley and Secso Linville.”, his grandfathers.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pat Breedlove Holley; sons, Rodney Holley and Darren Holley and his wife Mollie; daughter, Amanda Holley Gibson and her husband Gibby; grandchildren, Sarah Holley, Caleb Gibson, Logan and Landon Holley, and Noah Gibson; sister-in-law, Cindy Breedlove Saul and brother-in-law, Joey Breedlove and his wife Star.

Per Roger’s wishes, he will be cremated, and private services will be held.

Roy Quentin Shirley

Roy Quentin Shirley, 90, of Sumerco went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Hubbard Hospice House West, South Charleston.

Roy was a member of Summit Community Church. He was a sprinkler fitter and a member of UA Local 669 with over 41 years of service. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was also an avid wood worker.

He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Sharon Shirley and brother, Fred Shirley.

Roy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty; sons, Keith, Bret (Robin), Barry, and Brian (Beverly); five grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

Service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 10, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Miller Cemetery, Sweetland. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Arlen Ronnie Hughes

Arlen Ronnie Hughes, 71, of Pine Grove, went home to be with the Jesus, Wednesday, October 6, 2021, after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Den and Hazel Hughes and brother, Denver Hughes, Jr.

Arlen gave his heart to God on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cheryl; son John (Jesse) Hughes of Sumerco; grandson, Jacob Hughes, who was Papaw’s world; daughter, Collena (Roger) Morris of Sumerco; step granddaughter, Brianna Morris of Sumerco; brother, Jackie (Rita) Hughes; sister-in-law, Donna Hughes; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Arlen was a hard worker all his life. He worked at WV Steel for 10+ years, then David Saul’s Salvage where he worked more than 23 years. He retired from Coal River Energy when he was 63.

Arlen left behind a host of family and friends. Per his wishes there will be no service. He will be laid to rest at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco.

Thompson Garfield “Spike” Fry, Jr.

Thompson Garfield “Spike” Fry, Jr. passed away Monday, October 4, 2021, at Thomas Memorial Hospital. He will be cremated and laid to rest at Johnson Family Cemetery on Rabel Mountain. Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV is assisting the family with arrangements.

Christopher Allen “Ice Man” Ice, Sr.

Christopher Allen “Ice Man” Ice, Sr., went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Chris was the owner and operator of Fire & Ice Heating & Cooling. He was a member of Charleston Eagles Aerie 519, a member of ABATE WV, and Hilltop Baptist Church. Chris was a motorcycle enthusiast and loved raising money for charities.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda and brother, Howard.

Chris is survived by his wife of 11 years, Angie; five children, Christopher Ice, Jr., Mikayla Ice (Tony) Rua, Gary E. Hudson III, Christopher B. Hudson, and Hunter D. Hudson; grandson, Tony Jr.; and brother Rick (Helen) Ice; father & mother-in-law, Buzz & Carol Huffman; several nieces & nephews; and special friends, Chris, Laura, and Glen. He was an avid dog lover, leaving behind his five shepherds and beloved Bear.

Service will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors Jim Lennox and Doris Walls officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Carolyn Louise Byrd Snodgrass

Carolyn Louise Byrd Snodgrass, 77, born in Charleston on December 3, 1943, was greeted by her Lord Jesus Christ, and welcomed home to heaven on Monday, October 4, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Benny Ray Snodgrass, son Kenneth Snodgrass, daughter Katherine Snodgrass, her parents Wallace J. and Virginia Byrd and brother Wallace E. Byrd.

Carolyn was an active 30-year member of the Daughters of The American Revolution, in both the William Morris and the Kanawha Valley Chapters. She served in numerous leadership roles to include Vice-Regent and Recording Secretary. She was also distinguished as a member of the Service to Veterans Committee, Cameo Club, and the Snodgrass Clan Society. Carolyn won multiple awards for her American Heritage Fiber Arts at both the State and National levels. Further, she was a Wreaths Across America volunteer where she raised money for the purchase and placement of the wreaths each year.

Carolyn also loved swimming and aqua aerobics. In earlier years, she received certifications to instruct water exercises to include specialties in arthritis rehabilitation and those with Multiple Sclerosis.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Deborah Stewart (James) and her son, John Snodgrass (Jamie); grandchildren, Rebecca Wells, Joseph Layton, Hannah Hill (Austin), Sloane Stewart, Shea Stewart, Corey Snodgrass, Kaitlyn Kelly (Derek); great grandchildren, Taylor and Kailynne Wells, Easton Layton, Mia, Riley, and Zane Kelly; sisters, Patricia Wilson, Sandra Childress (Steve), Gloria Bailey (Debra), Sharon Shea (Richard); sisters-in-law, Phyllis Permillia, Genevieve Vandale, and Lillian Snodgrass.

Special thanks to Dr. John Frame and the staff at the Hubbard Hospice House in South Charleston for their kind, considerate, and compassionate care.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 8, 2021, at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum in South Charleston, Kanawha County with Pastor Bill Carter officiating.

David Meryl Reed

David Meryl Reed, 70, of St. Albans, WV, died Thursday, September 30, 2021, at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston after a two-week battle with Covid-19.

Dave was born July 18, 1951, in Batesville, Indiana, son of Lonzo and Clara (Hansen) Reed. He was the firstborn of 14 children. He graduated in 1969 from Sunman High School.

He worked at Campbell Hausfeld in Harrison, Ohio, for many years and ran his own business, T & R Compressors in Brookville, Indiana. Dave often used the flea markets to show and sell his merchandise.

Dave had numerous vending locations, but the last location before he retired was in Milton, West Virginia. This is the state where he met the love of his life, Paulette, and they were married 33 glorious years.

Dave lived his life for the Lord and was full of joy. He was a caregiver to many and never met a stranger. Dave would tell you he was blessed with 6 children of his own and doubly blessed for the 6 children he got when he married Paulette.

His greatest enjoyment was spending time with all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was treasured by everyone whose path he crossed and will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dawn and Darlene, and brothers Don and Darrell.

Dave is survived by his loving spouse, Paulette (Pauley) Reed; children Tabitha (John) Thompson, Mike (Jennifer) Reed, and Theresa (Greg) Baker all of

Metamora, Indiana, Robert Reed, Jon Reed, and Ashley Reed all of Arizona, Brian Hines, John (Sherry) Hines, Scott (Chrissy) Hines, Kim (Mike) Allen, Tammy (Randy) McCormick, and Jason (Melissa) Hines all of West Virginia. Siblings Diana Reed of Charlestown, Indiana, Dan (Deb) Reed of Oregon, Donna Overstreet, Della Chapman and Debbie Wiggers all of Batesville, Indiana, Dennis (Lorene) Reed of Milan, Indiana, Dale (Cathy) Reed of Big Bear Creek, W. Va., Denise (Terry) Bostic of Bloomingrose, W. Va., Doug (Gloria) Reed of Chandler, Arizona, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 4, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor John Mark Gillenwater officiating. Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, WV.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Rick Eugene Ferrell

Rick Eugene Ferrell, 69, of Logan, departed this life suddenly on Tuesday morning, September 28, 2021, at his home in Yawkey, WV.

Born August 7, 1952, at Logan General Hospital, he was the son of the late Jewel (McCloud) Ferrell and Virgil Ferrell of Melville.

He was a workaholic and passionate about life. He retired as an Electrical Sales Engineer spending the majority of his career in and around the coal mines. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He loved the simple things in life and could always make you smile. His hobbies included a fun game of poker and stock car racing.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Eddie Allen Ferrell.

Rick is survived by his wife, Becky (Jarrell) Ferrell of Yawkey, two sons, Timothy (Miranda) Jarrell of Scott Depot and Justin (Brooklyn) Ferrell of Yawkey; two daughters, Kelly (Rob) Ferrell of Powder Springs, GA and Kristen Ferrell of Morgantown; brother, Danny (Deneen) Ferrell of McKenzie, TN; 7 grandchildren, Madison Jarrell, Emilee Jarrell, Gage Jarrell, Isabella Jarrell, Alexis Ferrell, Jasmine Darden, and Aaliyah Ferrell; along with 5 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 3:00-5:00 p.m., Friday, October 1, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.
