Sallie Chandler Atkins

Sallie Chandler Atkins, 82, of Charleston passed away Thursday, July 15, 2004 after a short illness.

She was a graduate of Duval High School. She retired from the WV Department of Agriculture after 32 years of service with the state. She was a member of the Park Avenue Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Atkins; one daughter, Barbara Ann Valliere; parents, George and Leota Chandler of Lincoln County; two sisters, Ethleen Chandler and Gae Paxton; two brothers, Jess Chandler and Dana Harold Chandler.

She is survived by: 2 Daughters and son-in-law: Patsy Lee Carr of Charleston; Zola and Clay Miller of Spencer; Son and daughter-in-law: Roger and Shirley Atkins of Marietta, Ohio; Sister: Reba Egnor of Mineral Wells; 2 Brothers and sister-in-law: Troy Chandler of Spencer George, Jr.; Olivene Chandler of Ripley; 8 Grandchildren; 7 Great Grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, July 18, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Minister Jerry Alderson officiating. Burial will be in Orchards Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call Saturday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, Inc., 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, W V 25064.

Robert R. “Bobby” Fields

Robert R. “Bobby” Fields, IV, went home to be with the Lord on his 18th birthday, Thursday, July 15, 2004, after fighting a courageous battle with heart disease since birth.

He was a Junior at South Charleston High School and a member of Cross Lanes Baptist Church.
He is survived by: Mother: Paula Turley Fields; Father: Robert R. “Bob” Fields, III; Grandfather: Robert R. Fields; Grandmother: Jean Turley; Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

Service will be 2:00 PM Monday, July 19, 2004 at Cross Lanes Baptist Church, 102 Knollwood Dr., Cross Lanes with Pastor Seth Polk and Pastor Greg Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

Sharon Lynn Pauley

Sharon Lynn Pauley, 64, of St. Albans went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 14, 2004 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Guy and Lona Keeling and brother, David Keeling.

She is survived by:

3 Daughters: Debra Griffith Sonya Core Leatha Flowers; 2 Sons: Steve Pauley; Eddie Pauley; 1 Brother: Larry Keeling; 3 Sisters: Betty Mays Ruth Clutz Faye Moxley; 22 Grandchildren; 2 Great Grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Service will be 3:00 PM, Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Roe Smith officiating. Burial will be in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM prior to the service.

She was a beloved mother and sister who will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Archie R. Breedlove

Archie R. Breedlove, 92 of Alum Creek, formerly of Alkol, died Sunday July 11, 2004 at Thomas Memorial Hospital So. Charleston.

For the past 20 years he made his home with his sister and brother-in-law Avanell and Gene Canfield of Alum Creek.

Additional survivors are sister Olive Johnson of Sod and brothers Charles Breedlove of Jacksonville, FL and Richard Breedlove of Charleston.

Graveside service will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday July 14, 2004 at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens Yawkey with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Family and friends may call from 1 to 2 PM Wednesday at the Curry Funeral Home at Alum Creek.

Bessie V. Hanson Young

Bessie V. Hanson Young, 88, of Alum Creek, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston after a long illness.
Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. Young.

She is survived by her sons, Bob of Alum Creek, Larry of Sod, and David of Charleston; daughters, Vada Young of Alum Creek, Pansy Holstein of Sumerco; four grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, three step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Services will beheld at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman and Pastor Rexal Cooper officiating. Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call on Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Virginia R. Cooper Griffith

Virginia R. Cooper Griffith, 85, of Yawkey, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Griffith.

Virginia was a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters, Ruth Dean Jones of Yawkey, Linda Banks of Martinsburg; sons, Lang Griffith and Gail Griffith both of Yawkey, Dale Griffith of Panther, Butch Griffith of Garretts Bend; brothers, Gene Cooper of Massilon, Ohio, George Cooper of Branchland, Bernard Cooper of Griffithsville, Raymond Cooper of South Carolina; sister, Estel Wade of Griffithsville; 14 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 5, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell and Pastor Richard McCallister officiating. Burial will be held in Midkiff Cemetery, Sumerco. Friends may call on Sunday, July 4, 2004 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her husband Guy.

She was a member of the Sumerco Church of God.

She is survived by her daughters: Flora Painter of Sumerco with whom she made her home; Joan Harvey of Yawkey; 7 Sons: Ross and Ike, both of Alum Creek; Benny of Sumerco; Donnie and Buel, of both Yawkey; Jimmy of Griffithsville; Robert of Wakeman, Ohio; 3 Sisters: Faye Jeffers and Ruby Whittington, both of Buffalo; Anna Lee Toney of Branchland; 3 Brothers: Paul Cornell of Elyira, Ohio; Leonard Cornell of Lancaster, Ohio; Billy Cornell of Muskegon Heights, Michigan; 17 Grandchildren; 23 Great-Grandchildren; 1 Great-Great-Grandchild.

Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday June 24, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman, Pastor Richard McCallister and Pastor Butch Loftis officiating. Burial will be in the Orchard Hills Memory Gardens Yawkey. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dohnna Means Ashworth

Dohnna Means Ashworth, 69, of Alum Creek; bor July 14, 1934, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, June 19, 2004.

She is survived by her husband, Russell L. “Pete” Ashworth of Alum Creek; son, Frederick Jansohn III and wife, Kathleen; grandchildren, Kristine Coombs, Frederick N and Katy all of Alum Creek; step-son, Mark Ashworth and wife, Shannon; five grandchildren of Moses Lake, Washington; sister, and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Dr. John McGee of Cookeville, TN; mother-in-law, Mrs. Ida Mae Ashworth of Alum Creek; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Charles Evans of Charleston; Mrs. James McClure and Mrs. Darrell McMellon of Yawkey; brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ashworth of Hollywood, FL; Paul “Spike” Ashworth of Alum Creek; Lovell Ashworth of Norfolk, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Dohnna loved Jesus Christ as Savior and was a faithful member of the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church. She obtained a Masters Degree attending West Virginia University, the University of South Florida and Marshall University. Dohnna was a school teacher, having two years in the Florida system, three years in Mississippi and 25 years with Kanawha County Schools at Ruthlawn Elementary. She was a faithful witness for the Lord, and a loving companion of 30 3/4 years. Thank you sweetheart.

Funeral services will be held at the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00 AM Tuesday with Pastor Frank Chapman and Pastor Wallace York. Interment will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek.

Richard D. “Rick” Samples

Richard D. “Rick” Samples, 48, of St. Albans, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 after an apparent heart attack.

He was a former employee of Janitorial Services in Charleston, a graduate of St. Albans High School and an avid baseball player and fan, having pitched for St. Albans High School and played on the Eastern Little League and Babe Ruth Senior League.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, John Peanut Brown.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Brown; brother, David Samples; sister, Kimberly C. Kidd; half sister, Karen Leach; half brother, Tim Samples; step-sons, Chris and Chad Everett; former companion, Sharon Roberts and one step-grandson.

Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Ron Crum officiating. Burial will held in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, St. Albans. Friends may call two hours prior to service at the funeral home.

John A. Barnette

John A. Barnette, 92, of So. Charleston went home to be with the Lord Monday, June 14, 2004 at Select Speciality Hospital in Charleston.

John was retired from Smith Transfer with 19 years service and was a member of Dunbar Mountain Mission. For the past ten years John performed Missionary work in Mexico with Valley Baptist Retreat located in Mission, Texas.

He is survived by his wife: Janet ; 4 Daughters: Denise Dixon, Melissa Given, Barbara Wainwright & Francis Gilbert ; 1 Sister: Ruth Barker; 9 Grandchildren; 25 Great-Grandchildren; 2 Great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00 am Friday, June 18, 2004 at the Dunbar Mountain Mission , 605 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, with Pastor Ron Fisher &Pastor Billy Lucas officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park at Dunbar. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday at the Dunbar Mt. Mission. Curry Funeral Home at Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.
