June Irene Thomas, 85 of So. Charleston, born February 12, 1922, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 in Thomas Memorial Hospital So. Charleston after a long illness.  Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Thomas, and a son, James H. Thomas.

Surviving are daughters, Helen Blalock of Defuniak Springs, Florida, and June (Patty) I. Thomas at Home, sons, William F., Edward R., and Gene R. all of So. Charleston, Larry D. Thomas of Loudendale, Danny Joe of Defuniak, Florida and John L. Of St. Marys,; Sister, Mary Pauley of Spring Hill, Brother, Ray Fletcher of Brounland, 24 Grandchildren, 43 Great Grandchildren, and 7 Great- Great Grandchildren and many Nieces and Nephews.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at the Thomas Family Cemetery on Ballard Road, So. Charleston. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

April Lynn Means

April Lynn Means 31, of So Charleston died Friday, June 15, 2007 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a short illness. She was a resident assistant at Sweet Briar Assisted Living in Dunbar and a CNA at Riverside Golden Living in St Albans where she loved caring for the elderly. April was preceded in death by her grandfather Herbert Walton and Uncle, Timmy Hall. Burial will be in Fox Hill Cemetery at So Charleston. Marjorie L. Hoy 64 of Charleston died Sunday, June 24, 2007 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long illness.  She was a homemaker.

 

She is survived by: Son: Dana Hoy (Rosemary) of Lemore, CA; Daughter: Pamela Goodwin of So. Charleston; Mother: Maryland Moore of Charleston; 3 Sisters: Gloria Hall (Gary) of Charleston; Judy Waldron (David) of Braxton County; Patty Duncan (Jim) of Durham, NC; 4 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren

 

Services will be 1:00 PM on Monday, June 25, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Rd., Alum Creek, with Pastor Clarence Hutton officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

 

Othal Eugene Burgess

Othal Eugene Burgess, 71 of Alum Creek went home to the Lord Thursday, June 7, 2007 at home after a long illness.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Louise, son John Houston, daughter Argeon Louise and sister Josephine.  He was a retired truck driver and coal miner, an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ.

He is survived by his:  2 Sons: Michael and wife Deloris Burgess and James and wife Connie Burgess all of Alum Creek;  3 Brothers: Alvis of Clendenin; Robert of Milton; Calvin of Cambridge, Ohio; 6 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren

Services will be held 1:00 PM Monday June 11, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Minister Justin Imel officating. Burial with military graveside rites by Bennie Padilla VFW Post 4768 will be at Graceland Memorial Park So. Charleston. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 Sunday at the funeral Home.  Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.  A special” thank you”goes to Mike Burgess, Edith Gillispie and Hospice Care for there wonderful care and compassion.

JULIA BELLE ADKINS

Julia Belle Adkins 88 of Alum Creek died Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at Sylvia Adkins Personal Care Home in Hamlin after a long illness with Alzheimers.  She was a former employee of the Diamond Dept. Store in Charleston, a member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church at Alum Creek, a member of the Bennie Padilla Post 4768 Ladies Auxillary, and a former member of the Eastern Star in So Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Jacob & Mayme Peck, Brothers: Denver, Marvin & Orville Peck.  Survivors include her husband: Rae W. Adkins and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, June 8, 2007 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Rd., Alum Creek, with Pastors George G. Pauley officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens at Yawkey, WV,. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday at the funeral home.  The family would like to offer a sincere thanks to Hospice of Huntington for their special love & care during this time.

SILMAN SHULTA

Silman Shultz, 85, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at the Valley Center, South Charleston after a long illness.  He was a retired rigger from Union Carbide, South Charleston, a member of Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his sister, Brookie Shultz; nephew, Curtis Joe Shultz and three nieces, Charlene, Amanda and Jennifer.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2007 at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be held in the Shultz Family Cemetery, South Charleston. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Lillian W. Childress

Lillian W. Childress, 82 of Childress Mountain, So. Charleston went to be with the Lord Tuesday June 5, 2007.  She was a member of Bible Center Church of Charleston, was preceded in death by her husband Zack, son James Edward, mother Lola Wilson Conley and father William Wilson.  Lillian was born August 7, 1924 in Ellijay, Georgia and was a loving mother and grandmother. She worked for many years for the Kroger Company. After retirement she spent many happy years with her sewing and crafting and being a part of Arts and Crafts shows. She and her husband also made a career of antiquing. She had a deep devotion to the Lord. Her family was a source of joy and pride.

Lillian will be sadly missed by her daughters and sons-in-law: Lola and Chuck Roberts of So. Charleston, and Cathy and Mike Busch of Cross Lanes. She will also be missed by her grandchildren; Heather and Brittany Roberts, Ryan, Rachel and Samantha Busch. Also surviving: her sister at heart Betty Chandler of Jackson, Ohio, sister Bill and husband Huck Franklin of Oak Hill, brother-in-law Dr. Ross Childress and wife Roberta of So. Charleston, sister-in-law Jean Boone of Toledo, Ohio, sister-in-law LulaBelle Childress of So. Charleston, special niece Pat Franklin of Oak Hill, and many other loved ones.

Special thanks to her caregivers Pam Phillips and Cathy Snow. They are wonderful people and we also felt as if they were a part of our family. They were a special blessing from the Lord.  Also a very special thank you to Dr. John Frame and staff for their care and compassion for Lillian these past years.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 8, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor David Jones, Pastor of Care Ministries at Bible Center Church officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park So. Charleston. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 PM Thursday at the funeral home.  Because of her love of children her daughters request in lieu of flowers that donations be made in her memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis Tennessee 38105.

Estel M. Wade

Estel M. Wade, 86, of Griffithsville, passed away June 2, 2007 at Riverside Nursing, St. Albans.  She was preceded in death by her husband, George and parents, Jasper and Lessie Cooper.  She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Lincoln County. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Griffithsville.

She is survived by her son, Gary (Sherry) Wade of Griffithsville; daughter, Anna Mae (Steve) Thaxton of Kenna; grandchildren, Chris (Ronna) McCallister, Billy (Melinda) McCallister, Brian McCallister, Robby Wade all of Griffithsville; Rusty (Janet) Wade of Lexington, Kentucky and Ginger (Gabe) Holstein of Alum Creek; great grandchildren, Alli McCallister, Trip McCallister and Devon McCallister of Griffithsville, Gabbie and Griffin Holstein of Alum Creek, and Sydney and Ellee Wade of Lexington, Kentucky; brothers, Rev. Bernard Cooper of Griffithsville, Rev. Gene Cooper of Massilon, Ohio and Raymond Cooper of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Service will be 4:00 PM Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Minister Kim Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service.  She was loved by all who knew her. Thank you to the staff at Riverside Nursing for all the love and care they gave to her and a special thank you to Darlene and Rachel who loved her like their own. She will be sadly missed by all.

Karlene Faye Adkins

Karlene Faye Adkins, 55, of Sod, died Sunday, May 20, 2007 at home after a short illness.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Zuke and Edna Abshire; grandson, Christopher Rhodes; two brothers, Neil and Owen Abshire.  She was a homemaker and a member of McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband: James C.; Daughter: Cheryl Clark of Sod; Son: James O. Adkins of Sod; 3 grandsons: Derek Adkins, Travis Clark and Zackery Adkins and 4 sisters: Elizabeth Adams of Alabama, Rosemary McCallister of Sod, Debra Sue Maurer of Seville, Ohio and Helen Sandlin of South Charleston.

Services will be 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Roe Smith officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Arlene “Price” Loftis

Arlene “Price” Loftis, 77, of Sod, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at CAMC General Division after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Loftis; daughter, Carolyn Maynard; step-daughter, Ellen Childress; parents, Ralph and Ocie Gillenwater; brother, Maynard Gillenwater and sister, Diana Flowers.

She attended Elizabeth Baptist Church, Garretts Bend.

She is survived by her son, David Lucas of Sod; four step-daughters, Carol Turley of St. Albans, Pat Turley, Janice Goeglein and Kay Pahl all of Milton; step-sons, Teddy Loftis of Linn; Roger Loftis of St. Albans; sisters, Georgia “Delaphine” Sardelis of Bradenton, Florida; Joyce Dunlap of Garretts Bend; Marsha Fennimore of South Charleston; brothers, Ronnie Gillenwater of Cottageville; Glen Gillenwater of Walton; 17 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 18, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. Craig Gillenwater and Pastor Jackie Miller officiating. Burial will be held in Fairview Memorial Park, Hamlin. Friends may call on Thursday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.
