Josephine Rose “Nauny” Cash

Josephine Rose “Nauny” Cash, 83, of Sod went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 16, 2007 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.  She was a retired Special Education Aid for Lincoln County Schools; a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and was a devoted & very enthusiastic Duval High School sports fan, she was our “1” fan.

She is survived by:  Twin daughters: Janet (Chuck) Cyrus & Janice Lucas both of Garretts Bend; Twin Sister: Julia Eldridge & Sister: Helen Carson both of Lansing, MI; 4 Grandchildren: Chucky, Sha, Brian & Meredith; 10 Great Grandchildren: Lee, Ashley, Melanee, Makiya, Trenton, Chenoah, Alayna, Aliyah, Joey and Nevaeh and a very special angel who gave her daily love and care, Lisa Bird.

Service will be 2:00 pm Thursday, July 19, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Richard McCallister & Father Patrick McDonough officiating. Burial will be in McDowell Cemetery, Garretts Bend. Friends may call from 6 to 9 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Joseph William Hoy

Joseph William Hoy, 85, of Charleston passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at home after a short illness.  He was preceded in death by his parents Peter Pierce and Estella May Roberts Hoy, step-mother Gertrude Bumpus Hoy wife Chloe Saul Hoy and son Stephen Hoy.  Joe was a Navy veteran of WWII, a Baptist, was retired from Peoples Life Ins. Co. with 33 years service, a member of the American Legion and AF&AM Masonic Lodge # 153 Charleston.

He is survived by: 2 Sons: Barry D. Hoy and wife Mary of Charleston; Michael Hoy and wife Marion of Charleston;  Daughter: Barbara Jo Vance and husband Louie of Charleston; Brother: Ronald Hoy and wife Florine of Winston-Salem, North Caroline; Sisters: Viola Curran of Baltimore, Maryland; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren;

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, July 15, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastors George G. Pauley and Frank Chapman and Bill Bartlett officiating. Burial with military rites will be conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 at Forks of Coal Cemetery Alum Creek. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Donald H. McCormick

Donald H. McCormick, 84, of Alum Creek passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at Hubbard Hospice House Charleston after a long illness.  He was a retired auto mechanic and former owner of Don’s Garage at Alum Creek, also he was a Army Veteran of WWII during which time he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a member of the Bennie Padilla VFW Post 4768 at Alum Creek and was a Baptist.  Don was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

He is survived by his Wife: Ramona; 4 Sons: Roger Dale and wife Melody McCormick of Brounland, Donald C. and wife Darla McCormick of Sproul, Daniel J. and Timothy McCormick both of Alum Creek; 2 Brothers: Charles E. McCormick of Dunkirk, Indiana; and Johnny McCormick of Malden; 4 Grandchildren: Andrea Nunn, Sarah McCormick, Josh and Jacob McCormick; 2 Great Grandchildren: Jayden and Kaylee Nunn;

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, July 13, at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be at the Forks of Coal Memorial Park Alum Creek. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the funeral home

Doris Lee Waldron

Doris Lee Waldron 84, of St. Albans, formerly of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord July 10, 2007 at the home of her daughter Deanna McKean.  She was born June 10, 1923 in Lincoln County and was a daughter to the late Watson and Dora Hudson.  She was also preceded in death by her husband Dennis Ray Waldron, and son Douglas Ray Waldron.

Doris was a homemaker and a member of the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church at Alum Creek.  She is survived by her daughter Deanna and son-in-law Stan McKean of St. Albans.  Three Grandchildren, Patricia Bryant of Charlestown, Indiana, Dallas Ray McKean of St. Albans and Stephanie Sansom of Sod and 4 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, July 12, at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor George G. Pauley officiating. Burial will be at the Forks of Coal Cemetery Alum Creek. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Billy H. Midkiff

Billy H. Midkiff, 75 of Alum Creek passed away Sunday July 8, 2007 at home after a long illness.  He was preceded in death by his son Mark, father Arnold and grandchildren Matthew and Cristy Miles.  He was a life long resident of Alum Creek, a graduate of Duval High School Class of 1949 and was retired from Union Carbide Tech Center.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys; Daughter: Sandy (Skip) Miles of Griffithsville; Grandsons: Bart (Andrea) Midkiff of Sumerco; Brent (Amy) Miles of Griffithsville and 3 Great Grandchildren: Ryan and Jaiden Miles, and Madisyn Midkiff; Daughter-in-law; Kathy Midkiff of Alum Creek; Mother: Esther Midkiff of Alum Creek; 3 Sisters: Patsy (Robert) Lowery, Helen (Bill) Lewis all of Alum Creek, Mary Ann (Pete) Maurer of South Carolina; 2 Brothers: Jim (Ruth) Midkiff of Alum Creek, Jerry (Donna) Midkiff of Hamlin; and Several Nieces and Nephews;

Raymond Hudson

Raymond Hudson, 88, of South Charleston, has been given his abundant reward for his many years of obedience and service by going home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 8, 2007.  He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and sisters, his daughter, Regina Gomer and her two infant children.  He was a member and faithful attendee of Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene for 49 years. Many people’s lives have been touched because of his calling from God to visit the sick, the elderly and the dying from his church and the community.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years Mary Lou Hudson; daughters, Neva Horne and husband Cecil of South Charleston and Myrna Gatrost and husband Gary of North Carolina; sisters, Barbara Parsons and husband Kelly of South Charleston and Juanita Williams of Marmet; grandchildren, Susan, John, Jamie, Jennifer, Bobby and Beth; great grandchildren, Hannah, Brandon and John.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at the Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene with Dr. Mervin C. Smith, Rev. Merlin E. Provance and Rev. John Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Fox Hill Cemetery, South Charleston. Friends may call on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.  Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family requests, in honor of Raymond’s dedication and love of the Nazarene Campgrounds in Summersville, West Virginia, that donations be made to West Virginia Nazarene Camp/Quarter Bank Ministry and sent to: The West Virginia South District, 5515 Kentucky Street, South Charleston, WV 25309.

Gladys Johnson

Gladys Johnson, 96 of Alum Creek, passed away Sunday July 8, 2007 at home after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband James H. “Hippo” Johnson.  She was a charter member of the Alum Creek Independent Baptist Church and a retired school teacher with Kanawha County Board of Education with 43 years of service.  She was survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday July 11, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Entombment will be at Graceland Memorial Park So. Charleston. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Sgt. James Allen May

Sgt. James Allen May, 62, of Springdale, Arkansas, formerly of Lincoln County, died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at his home after a short illness.  He was a highly decorated retired Staff Sergeant of the United States Maine Corp., 1st Bat., 27th Reg., and a Vietnam War Veteran receiving the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.

James is survived by one daughter, Rachel Pauley of Sod; three grandchildren, Zachary and Mikayla Adkins and Jacob Pauley; mother, Lillian Adkins of Madison; four brothers, Don May of Springdale, AR, Randy May of Dallas, TX, Larry May of Madison, Todd Adkins of Hickory, NC; one sister, Sharon Ball of Van.  He is also survived by a band of Marine brothers and a great number of Vietnam Veterans of whom “Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue”.

Memorial services will be held 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 9, 2007 at the Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with the Benny Padilla Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 conducting military rites. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A Veteran escort will accompany the remains to Arlington National Cemetery at Quantico, VA for the burial with grave side honors at 3:00 PM on Friday, August 10, 2007.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Benny Padilla Alum Creek VFW Post, P.O. Box 6 Alum Creek, WV 25003 or to The WV Veterans Home, 512 Water St., Barboursville, WV 25504.

Betty J. Pauley

Betty J. Pauley, 71, of Alkol, WV went home to be with the Lord on June 25, 2007 after a long illness. She was a member of the Spurlockville Church of Christ and a lifelong resident of Alkol, WV. Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie & Hermit King of Alkol, WV.  Survivors include: Husband: Jack Pauley of Alkol, WV; Sons: Melvin Pauley & companion, Bonnie Adkins of Woodville, WV; and Mike Pauley & wife, Debbie of Alkol, WV.

Grandchildren: Shandi Pauley of Alkol, WV; Emily Humphreys of St. Louis, MO; Wesley Pauley of Alkol, WV; Kasey Roberts of Griffithsville, WV; John Walls of Boone Co., WV; Nichole Davis of So. Charleston, WV.  Great Grandchildren: Hadin Pauley, Reagan Humphreys, Daniel Sage Walls, Drake Davis and a new great grandchild due in February.  Sisters: Evelyn Hundley of Pilot Mountain, NC; Juanita Mays of Yawkey, WV; Ann Pauley of Ripley, WV; Wanda Bledsoe of Asheville, NC; Brothers: Dempsey King of Port St. Lucie, FL and Larry King of Garretts Bend, WV

Roma Glenn Justice

Roma Glenn Justice, 72, of Sod, Lincoln County, departed this life on June 18, 2007, at Hubbard Hospice House after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is now sight.  Roma was born on September 19, 1934, the only daughter of Wavie and Fred S. McKinney. She was preceded in death by both parents, as well as her brother, James Norris McKinney.

She was a 1952 graduate of Duval High School, and a graduate of Garnet Career Center’s licensed practical nursing program. She devoted her life to caring for others by working for Dr. Smith of Alum Creek for 17 years, before retiring from CAMC, General Division, with 15 years’ service.  She was a faithful member of Vision of Harvest Baptist Church.

Roma is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Glen Justice; brother, Murrel McKinney and his wife, Alberta of Sumerco; brother, Fred S. McKinney and his wife, Betty of Charleston; and sister-in-law, Alva McKinney Quinn of St. Albans. Seven nieces and nephews, as well as several great nieces and nephews, also survive her. She will be greatly missed by Rosemary, her cat.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 21st, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastors Billy Silva and Tom Price officiating. Roma’s earthly vessel will be laid to rest at the Justice family plot in the Lively Cemetery, Sod, WV.  Visitation will be Wednesday, June 20th, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Roma’s name to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.
