Nile Karen BarkerNile Karen Barker, 75, went home to meet the Lord on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at  Edgewood Manor, Lucasville, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard & Kathleen Barker and brother, Ricky.

He attended Emmons Freewill Baptist Church, and loved his Lord dearly.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War with the 5th Group Special Forces.  He was a member of the Alum Creek VFW.

He is survived by his brothers: Dale (Sue) Barker and Blane (Belinda) Barker and sisters: Brenda (Gene) Flowers and Martha (Steve) Hargis.

Services will be 2:00pm on Friday, September 26, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV, with Pastor Richard Harold officiating.  Burial with military rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 3768 will follow at the Barker cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Junior Freeman Chandler

Junior ChandlerJunior Freeman Chandler, 85, of Yawkey in Lincoln County, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 22, 2014, after a long illness. He was born December 16, 1928 in Saint Albans to Freeman and Viola Chandler.  He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge at Griffithsville.  He was retired from Union Carbide Construction Company at Institute as a supervisor with 40 years of service.

Junior became a born-again Christian when he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour when he was 18 years of age.  He was later ordained as a deacon and faithfully served in that position at Joe’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Tango for more than 57 years.  He loved his church and was a faithful member.

On July 8, 1947,  he married the love of his life and they recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Freeman and Viola Chandler; sisters: Norma and Agnes; half-sisters: Ruth, Edna, Thelma and Dorothy; brother: Denver Chandler; half-brother: Donald Mosteller; sons-in-law: Harold Bennett and Richard Bowles.

Junior is survived by his loving wife, Anna Smith Chandler; Daughters: Dorean Bennett, Ovieda, FL; Janet (Dwight) McClure, Griffithsville; Melinda Bowles, Yawkey; Patty (Lannie) Kidd, Alum Creek; Son: Jackie Chandler, Yawkey; half-sister: Mary Florence Mosteller; half-brothers: Arthur and Roger Mosteller; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00pm Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Joe’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Tango, with Rev. Oshel Bell and Rev. Robert McCallister officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hill Memory Garden, Yawkey.  Visitation will be Wednesday, September 24, 2014, from 6:00 – 8:00pm at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.

Artimitia “Artie” Smith Fowler

FowlerArtimitia “Artie” Smith Fowler went to Heaven on September 13, 2014 to meet with her Lord and her family and friends.  She passed away at the Oak Ridge Center where she had called her home for five years.  She is survived by her son, Carlisle (Janet) Smith, and grandchildren, Stephen and Terri Smith, all of St. Albans.  One great granddaughter, Rachel Smith of Marietta, GA., and her adopted children Ray and Jeanette Brammer, also of St. Albans.  She is survived by one brother, Maxfield Smith (Bea) of Spring Hill, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in passing were her husband, Clarence “Mack” Fowler, parents, Clarence and Lula Smith, her sisters Ruth, Otie, Katherine, Ann, and Alpha, brothers Arnold, Basil, Bernard, and Frazier “Jake”.

Artie was born in Tornado on Februrary 23, 1918 on her mother’s birthday.  She worked at the Tornado General Store for more than twenty years.  She taught Sunday School at Pleasant Hill church for many years.  She then went to work with her husband, selling and delivering wholesale meats.  She and Mack retired and enjoyed traveling to Canada and several other places.  She kept her Bible on the table in front of her at Oak Ridge and read it every day.  She said that was her way of witnessing to the staff and visitors at Oak Ridge.

The visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 on Monday the 15th, and the funeral will be at 11:00 on Tuesday the 16th at her home church, Bethany Baptist, at 2504 Grant Avenue in St. Albans.  The services will be conducted by Pastor Tim Campbell and Pastor Butch Leadman.  Burial will be at the Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery.

 

 

Betty Cummings

Betty CummingsBetty Jean Dunlap Cummings, 80, of South Charleston went to be with the Lord at home Monday, September 8, 2014 after a short illness.

She was retired District Director from U. S. Dept. of Agriculture; she served as Post Master of McCorkle, WV Post Office; a member of Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church and former member of Olive Missionary Baptist Church at Julian where her husband, Damon Dunlap was pastor. She was also preceded in death by her second husband Clay Cummings.

Betty is survived by daughter, Melissa (Mike) Wheeler; sons, Tony (Tammy), Robert (Robin), Jeffery (Tammy) and Jonathan Dunlap; sisters, Cordia Estep, Sue Bird and Bera Miller; grandchildren, Beth, Jessica, Michele, Paula, Mikie, Stephanie and Ashley; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Thursday, September 11, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service Thursday.

 

Carol Jean Goff

Carol GoffCarol Jean Goff, 74, of Tornado, went home Sunday, August 31, 2014 after a long illness at Hospice West, South Charleston.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Blondie Satterfield; sisters, Sylvia Estep and Sue Poole; and brother, Frankie Satterfield.

She is survived by her husband, Butch; stepdaughter, Lisa Harmon, stepson, Stefan (Jennifer) Goff; four grandchildren, Madison, Ryan, Joshua and Calem; sisters, Lou Ellen McClure, Betty M. (Joe) Prine, Sandy (John) Vineyard; brothers, Jimmie (Dottie) Satterfield, Roger (Brenda) Satterfield, Richard (Heidi) Satterfield and Terry Satterfield; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 3 pm Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, with Pastors Butch Loftis and Dave Callison officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Jeff A. Lilly

Jeff A. Lilly, 44, of  Alum Creek, went to be with the Lord Thursday, August 28, 2014 at home after a long illness.

He was a mechanic at Runyan’s Sunoco; he also worked with his brothers in their family contracting business and  was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

Jeff was preceded in death by his mother, Caroline Sue Lilly; Grandparents, Gladys Mae Lilly, Sanford A. and Dorothy Bell; father-in-law, Doug Griffith.

He is survived by his wife, Cody; son, Jeffrey; father, Franklin of Alum Creek; brothers, Frank II (Paula) of Alum Creek, Toby (Anita) of Davis Creek and Adam (Mindy) of Poca; sister, Sarah (Bobby) Davis of Charleston; mother-in-law, Gayle Ryan of Columbia, NC; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, September 2, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Entombment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 pm Monday at the funeral home.

On March 4, 2012 we received a beautiful blue-eyed, brown haired little girl lent to us from our Father in Heaven.  Her name means “Joy of the Father” and she brought so much joy to everyone that her grandma called her Sunshine.

Who would have imagined how our Lord Jesus Christ could use a little girl that could not walk or talk to touch so many lives.

On Thursday, August 28, 2014, it was time to give her back to the Father, for she was only lent to us.  We were so blessed and thankful for the time we had with her.   The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away;  blessed be the name of the Lord.  Job 1:21b.

She was preceded in death by her great grandparents. Junior and Dorothy Ward and Ray and Alma Miller; and Uncle Daniel Miller.

Abigayle is survived by her loving mother and father, Angie and Brent Fleshman; brothers, Kyle and Ethan; sisters, Danielle and Brielle all of Culloden;  grandparents, Betty Fleshman of Barboursville, Shirley and Bob Connolly of Turtle Creek and Danny and Gail Miller of Spurlockville; great grandparents, Victor and Opal Clark of Alkol; Aunts Carol Lee Miller and Wendy (Joey) Boardman of Alkol; also left to cherish her memory are her great uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends.

Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Sunday, August 31, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Mat Baldwin officiating.  Burial will follow at Clark Cemetery, Bulger Road, Alkol.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Tony Curtis Lewis

Tony Curtis Lewis, 56, of Yawkey went home Friday, August 15, 2014 at CAMC General Division, Charleston, WV.

He was currently employed at the West Virginia DMV in Logan; he was former owner and operator of the Market Express in Alum Creek; and was a longtime manager of Foodland in Hamlin.

Tony was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Lewis.

He is survived by daughter, Erica (Scott) Hall of Yawkey; son, Jason (Erin) Lewis of Huntersville, NC; father, Billy Lewis of Alum Creek; brother, Kenny (Mona) Lewis of Hurricane;  and two grandchildren, Kennedy and Tyson Hall.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, August 18, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek.  The  family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Gene Dow DeBord

Gene DebordGene Dow DeBord, 79, of Alum Creek, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Hubbard Hospice West.  He retired from Union Carbide where he worked for 43 years.

Gene loved to hunt, fish, and spend time with family and friends.  He was a very spiritual person and a member of Bible Center Church.  He was kind and generous to everyone.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gary DeBord; brothers, Talmadge and James DeBord, and sister, Virginia Midkiff.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Yvonne DeBord; daughter, Paula Meikle and her husband Gregory; grandchildren and a great-grandson; brother French and his wife, Sue DeBord; sisters, Freda Eskew, Faye Bell, Joyce Pauley, Sherry DeHart; sister in law, Jaunita DeBord.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm, Saturday, August 16, 2014 at The Bible Center Church with Pastor Chad Cowan officiating.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.  Friends may call from 11:00am to 1:00pm prior to the service.
