Ruth Clark ObitRuth M. Clark, 88, of Charleston went home to be with her Lord Friday, June 2, 2017 with the family by her side at Hubbard Hospice West in South Charleston.

She retired from the WV Department of Motor Vehicles after 33 years. Ruth was a member of the Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene and was chosen the Queen of Bellaire for 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hazel and Howard Miller and brothers, Herbert and Curtis Miller.

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Susan (Ken) Williams and Janet (Chuck) Atkins; 4 granddaughters Stephanie Williams, Kristen Atkins, Brooke Williams and Katelyn Gamble; and 3 great grandchildren Nancy, Kendyll and Carson Upper.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at the Davis Creek Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Sandy Burdette officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions to the Davis Creek Church of Nazarene, 102 Nazarene Dr., South Charleston, WV 25309.

Mary Ann Scott

Mary ScottMary Ann Scott, 90, of Alum Creek, went to be with the Lord at home Sunday, May 28, 2017 surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Ray Scott, daughter, Nona Faye Gonterman,

She was a former employee of St. Francis Hospital, a former member of New Life Ministries in Dunbar and currently attended McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Meddie Ray) Dunlap, sons, Ron (Delilah) Scott and Wayne (Sandra) Scott, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 1st, at McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church, with Pastor Isaiah Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in the Scott Family Cemetery Alum Creek.

Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Hospicecare 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W. Charleston, WV 25387-2536

 

 

Rodney Ray Pauley

Rodney Pauley Memorial Folder photoRodney Ray Pauley, 64, of Alum Creek went home peacefully Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his mother Agatha June Pauley, grandparents Jim and Marie Huffman, and Roscoe Pauley and Dessie Pauley Johnson.

He was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitter’s Local 625.  He served in the West Virginia Air National Guard and was a 1970 graduate of Duval High School.

He is survived by his daughter, Nissa Rhea Pauley; father, Asa; brother, Jeff (Barbara) Pauley, nieces and nephews Zack (Joyce) Pauley and Christian Pauley (Danielle), Gabe, Makayla, Jozelyn, and Silas Pauley.

A memorial service to celebrate Rod’s life will be 8:00am Wednesday morning May 31, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.

Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  It is requested that you wear casual or work clothes.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, please be respectful of our wishes and make donations to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311.

 

Miriam Green

Green photoMiriam Green, 73, of Alum Creek formerly of Harrisburg, PA, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, May 18, 2017 at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Miriam had made her home in Alum Creek  with her daughter, Tammy Blankenship the last 8 years.

She was a nurse working in assisted living while living in Arkansas.

Miriam was a loving mother, caring for her family and others and was a faithful Christian.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Dorothy Stouffer; and two brothers, George and Joey Stouffer.

She is survived by three children, Ron (Chris) Green of Lancaster, Pa., Tammy (Kip) Blankenship of Alum Creek and Robert Sr. (Tara) Green; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Jessica, Jeff, Clifton Lee, Travis, Bob Jr., and Tyler; and six great grandchildren, Brice, Paige, Laci Mae, Aubree, Olivia and Pazlee; and two brothers, Harold and Jerry.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 21,  at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.    Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery in Alum Creek.    The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Helen Marie Goode

Helen GoodeHelen Marie Goode, 92 of Tullahoma, TN formerly of St. Albans, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 10, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, George Goode; father, Lemie Hill; mother, Emily Strickler Hill; and brother, Rex Hill.

She is survived by her children, Daniel Goode (Julie) of Tullahoma, TN, Ronald Goode of St. Albans, and Allen Goode (Jo Ann) of Charleston; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchlidren.

Graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in South Charleston with Minister Louis Watts officiating. Family and friends will gather from 11:00 a.m. to noon at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek.

Benny Ray Snodgrass

Benny SnodgrassBenny Ray Snodgrass, 77, of Charleston, died Friday, May 12, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Ray Snodgrass; daughter, Katherine Lynne Snodgrass; parents, Benjamin and Tina Hager Snodgrass; brothers, James Lowell and Franklin Dale Snodgrass; and sisters, Nancy Caroll Snodgrass and Wanda Lee Grass.

Benny was born in Kanawha County, January 10, 1940 and was a U. S. Army Veteran having served during the Vietnam War. Benny was a lifelong, proud member of the Teamsters Union as an over-the-road truck driver. During his retirement years he became an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Byrd Snodgrass; son, John Kenneth and his wife, Jamie Poe Snodgrass; daughter, Deborah Lynne and husband, James Stewart; grandchildren, Rebecca Lynne Layton Wells and husband Allen, Joseph Ray Layton, John Corey Snodgrass and Kaitlyn Marie Kelly, Hannah Ashley Stewart, Sloane MacKenzie Stewart and Deborah Shea Stewart; great grandchildren, Kenna Taylor Wells and Kaitlynne Nicole Wells, Easton Hunter Layton, Mia Manetta Dorsey and Riley Aretta Kelly; sisters, Genevieve Marie Vandale and Phyllis Jean Permilia.

Graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 15, 2017 at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston with military graveside honors conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

Leslie SmithLeslie O. “Acie” Smith, 85, of Elkin, NC,  (formerly of Yawkey, WV) passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Woltz Hospice Home, Dobson, NC.

He was a retired Teamster construction worker for Robert Augstein Co., in Charleston, WV, and  Army Veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and parents, Shannon & Dora Smith.

He is survived by his two daughters, Debbie (Terry) Synder and Wanda (Randy) Clark; three sisters, Shirley Roberts, Leona Jenkins and Mable Hudson, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1:00pm Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Kenny Pauley officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

 

Anitra Jean Veres

Anitra VeresAnitra Jean Kinder Veres, 84 of St. Albans, was born April 8, 1933 in Seth and departed this life on April 24, 2017 from a sudden illness.

She is the daughter of the late Winford Jackson and Ardith Marie Egnor Kinder and was also preceded in death by her sister, Mildred “Miggy” Kinder.

Anitra was a graduate of Sherman High School Class of 1951 and has faithfully served on the Reunion Committee for many years. She was employed by The Diamond Department Store and later worked at Jay Instrument Company.

She was a member of Healing Stream Baptist Church at Seth and later attended Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans.

Anitra is survived by her husband, Louis Veres of 65 years, son Dr. Philip “Gary” Veres and wife, Brandie of St. Albans, grandson Micah Veres and wife, Julia of St. Albans, sisters, Naomi Sebok of Seth and Wanda Veres of Seth and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Many thanks to the caring staff at Thomas Memorial Critical Care Unit especially Nurses Delana and Jennifer and Doctors Wade, Hess, Takubo and Rashid for all their love, kindness and care that they gave her and the family during this difficult time.

Funeral service will be at 12:00 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave., St. Albans with the Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Dunbar. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.

Billy G. Newman

Billy NewmanBilly G. Newman, 88, of Alkol, WV entered into eternal rest on Monday, April 24, 2017.   He was born November 22, 1928 in Wayne Co., WV to the late Clovis and Della Alley Newman.

He graduated from Buffalo High School at the age of 15.  At the age of 16 he went to work as a deckhand on the river.

Billy served in the U. S. Army for 2 years and returned to the river boats to gradually become Captain.  He retired after 42 years to do what he loves most.   Billy stayed on the farm with his wife of 60 years, Jean (now deceased), where he loved to work in his garden.

He has two daughters, Rita Ann (deceased) and Karen Jean (David) and two sons, Aaron (Julia) and Nathan, seven grandchildren 3 great grandchildren.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Randell Kinder officiating.  Burial will follow at the Clark Family Cemetery in Flat Creek.   The family will receive friends 1 hour prior at the funeral home.

The family would like to sincerely thank all who visited, called and sent dinners to our dad.   We also want to thank Gene and Tammy Pauley for the   care, kindness and loved they showed my dad.   Thanks to all that helped.

Jerry Wayne Messer, Sr.

He was born August 26, 1952 in Madison, WV, son of the late Jesse E. and Allie (VanGundy) Messer. Jerry is also preceded in death by brothers, Jesse Gene and Jackie Dean Messer, and sister, Oma Mae Goode.

Prior to retiring from Kroger of Madison, WV, he worked at Montgomery Wards in Staunton, VA.

Jerry was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie; sons, Jeffery W. (Cindy) Messer of Lyndhurst, VA and Jerry W. (Heather) Messer of Julian, WV, stepchildren, Howard Moyers (fiancé Sally) of WV and Sonya Carter of Staunton, VA, brother, Mickie (Belinda) Messer of Staunton, VA; seven grandchildren, Alisha and Casey Taylor, MaKenzie, Kendra, Brooklyn and Miley Moyers, Maci and Remington Messer, many nieces and nephews, his best buddy, Roger Payne and longtime friend, Timmy Linville.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastors Stevie Cox and Randall Griggs officiating. Burial will follow at the VanGundy Family Cemetery in Left Fork. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Active Pallbearers are Mickie Messer, Charles Messer, Dusty Harvey, Adam Price, Shawn Price, Jeff Payne and Travis Harvey. Honorary Pallbearers are Roger Payne and the grandchildren.

The family would like to express a special “thank you” to the ICU Staff at Thomas Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care and to his granddaughter, Kendra for helping with his special medical needs.
