William R. “Bill” Shartzer, 82, of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at home after a long illness.

He was a retired auto painter for Joe Holland Chevrolet, South Charleston. A member of Sumerco Church of God and a WWII Army veteran.

He is survived by: Wife: Billie; Son: William Shartzer of Upton, KY; 3 Step-sons: Ronnie McCallister of South Carolina; Michael McCallister of North Carolina; Timothy McCallister of Florida; 2 Step-Daughters: Sandy McCallister of Florida; Dreama Hammack of Elkview; 2 Brothers: Henry Shartzer of Leitchfield, KY; Walter Shartzer, of Florida; 2 Grandchildren; 1 Great Grandchild; 10 Step Grandchildren; 6 Step Great Grandchildren

Service will be 2:00 PM Friday, August 1, 2003 at the Church of God, Sumerco, with Pastor Richard McCallister and Pastor Butch Loftis officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Service in care of Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

Barbara A. Bullis

Barbara A. Bullis, 81, of Caro, Michigan, died Friday, July 25, 2003 in her home.

She is survived by her children, Mollie Glendening of Kalispell, MT, Michael Ray McDaniel of Caro, MI, Mahlon Bullis of Portland, OR; 15 Grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren, 7 Great Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services held on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Keith McDaniel officiating. Burial held in Bell Family Cemetery, Yawkey. There will not be a visitation.

Maxine Keeling

Maxine Keeling, 79, of Garretts Bend went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church for 67 years, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years: Norris; Son and daughter-in-law: Roger & Sandi of Scott Depot; Granddaughter: Erin Keeling; Grandson: Derek Keeling; Brother: Walter Dunlap of Garrets Bend; Sister: Wanda Dauis of Cross Lanes; 4 Half-Sisters: Ann Fowler, Linda Jones, Margie Basham & Karen Vickers.

Special thanks to caregiver, Wanda Dragoo.

Service will be 1:00 PM Saturday, July 26, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Winford Curry officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 9 Friday at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the ICU nursing staff and doctors at Thomas Memorial Hospital for all the loving-care and kindness during this difficult time.

He was retired from the city of South Charleston.

He is survived by his five daughters, Wanda Bostic of Gay, Ollie Bostic of Griffithsville, Anna Gue of Branchland, Linda Cobb of Alum Creek, Mena Stanley of Richmond, VA; five sons, Junior of Sumerco, Bob of Alkol, Ojay of Myrtle Beach, SC, Frankie of Hamlin, Hershel of South Charleston, four step-daughters, Orpha Wieppe of Florida, Barbara McCutcheon of Sissonville, Mary Jo Parsons of Charleston, Geraldine Moore of Nitro; two step-sons, Albert Moore of Charleston, Denny Moore of Hurricane; three brothers, Joe Sowazds of Michigan, Denver Sowards of Ohio, Brady Sowards of Florida; five sisters, Edna Barrby of Ohio, Margaret Newcomber of North Carolina, Edith Sedlarick and Jewell Coburn both of Michigan, Gladys Spradling of Arizona; 55 Grandchildren; 104 Great Grandchildren; 10 Great Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, July 24, 2003 at 1:00 PM with Bishop Chester McCutcheon officiating. Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call on Wednesday, July 23, 2003 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home. Roscoe Johnson ,80, of South Charleston died  Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at home after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Rosina Johnson and great-nephew, Cagun Vandall.

He was a farmer, owner of Johnson Roofing Company and was a WWII Army veteran.

He is survived by one sister and brother-in-law who considered Roscoe his best friend, Linda and Paul McCune of South Charleston; two nieces, Patti McCune and Diana Vandall; one great nephew, Cruz Vandall; special cousin, Butch Bennet of South Charleston.

Service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. Burial will be in Johnson Cemetery, South Charleston. Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Anna Carolyn “Toad” Lawrence, 82, of Griffithsville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 14, 2003 at Lincoln Continuous Care Center, Hamlin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lawrence, two sisters, Mildred Lee and Genevia Nunn and one brother, Billy Dunlap.

She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Garretts Bend, a life long resident of Lincoln County, and was retired from the Lincoln County Board of Education.
She is survived by her three sons, Walter “Danny” of Griffithsville, Lonnie “Gene” of Charleston, Jimmy of Yawkey; two daughters, Sandra Kay Linsky of Glen Dale, Mitzi Ann Roberts of Griffithsville; one step-son, Buster Lawrence of Illinois; one sister, Maxine Keeling of Sod; four half-sisters, Shazon Ann Fowler of Camp Creek, Linda Jones of St. Albans, Margie Basham of Tornado, Karen Vickers of Rock Creek; one half brother, Walter Dunlap of Sod; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Friday, July 18, 2003 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Butch Leadman officiating. Burial will be held in Lawrence Family Cemetery, Griffithsville. Friends may call on Thursday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Woodrow Wilson Watson, 90, of South Charleston, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 13, 2003 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.
He was a caustic operator at FMC, a member of Hilltop Baptist Church, South Charleston and an Army veteran of WWII.

He is survived by his daughter, Judy Pauley of Richmond, VA; two step-daughters, Betty Kinder of Dunbar, Nora Lowe of South Charleston; two sisters, Sally Fullerton of Huntington, Florabell Lay of Fayetteville, NC; one brother, William Watson of St. Albans; two granddaughters, Lori Garrison and Casey Cook both of Richmond, VA; five step-grandchildren, Teresa Pauley, Robert and Kelly Dodson, Phillip and Michael Lowe; Special nieces and nephews, B.J. McCague, Jack and Roger Watson, Sherry Keener, John Watson, Paula, Vickie, Dorcas, Pat, Lorretta, Butch, John and Dan.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW post 4768 will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Betty Smith Daniels, 63, of Charleston, died Friday, July 11, 2003 at Columbus Methodist Hospital, Columbus, Ohio after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Daniels, Sr. and her granddaughter, Alyssa Daniels.

Betty was a member of McKinnon Presbyterian Church, Charleston and a retired owner of a Charleston beauty shop.

She is survived by her daughters, Vona Cadle of Fairdale, WV; Letitia Carmack of Dublin, OH; son, Robert Lee Daniels, Jr. of Cross Lanes, W V; sister, Nellie Turley of South Charleston; halfbrother, Dehnaz Smith of Dunbar; grandchildren, Jamie and Amanda Cadle, Dana and Shawn Bazker, and Ashley Daniels; great grandchildren, Sydney Cadle and Deon Barker.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 18, 2003 at 3:30 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. Ed Thompson officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the American Lung Association in memory of Betty Daniels.

Cal “Babe” Dunlap

Cal “Babe” Dunlap, 83, of Tornado, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2003 at home surrounded by his loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Madeline.

Cal was a former member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Sod.

He his survived by his sons and their wives, Gary and Doris Dunlap of Scott Depot, David and Cathy Dunlap of Florida, Louie and Diania of Tornado; one sister, Gladys Thompson. Cal was a beloved grandfather of five and a great grandfather of seven.

Services will beheld Sunday, July 13, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. David Dorsey officiating. Burial will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Saturday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar, West Virginia 25064.
