Ervin EskewErvin Athel Eskew, 83, of South Charleston went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at home.

He was a retired welder for Kanawha Manufacturing.  Ervin attended Hilltop Baptist Church.  He loved hunting, fishing and hunting ginseng.

Ervin was preceded in death by his wife, Dreama; brother, Alfred; sister, Virgie; and parents, Kyle and Edith Eskew.

He is survived by daughters, Sandy (Bob) Black, Debbie Ewing and Jacqueline Eskew (Brandon Oldham); sons, Joseph (Ashley) Eskew and Dale Eskew;  brother, Burlin (Sue) Eskew; sister, Linda Bailey; and seven grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Jim Lennox and Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be  11:00 a.m. Monday, July 24, at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston.  The family will receive friends Sunday 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home

Teresa LoweryTeresa A. Lowery, 60, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at CAMC – Memorial Division in  Charleston, WV.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Robert “Bobby” Lowery, in April 2013.

Teresa graduated from Duval High School in 1975 and from WVSU in 1978.  She was an elementary school teacher in GA, TN and WV for over 30 years.  She was a member of the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Robert Aaron Lowery (wife, Lauren) of Charlotte, NC; parents, Oshel & Rosemary Bell of Yawkey; sisters, Debbie (Max) Hill of St. Albans and Kim (Frank) Chapman of Alum Creek;  niece, Melinda (Brian) Greathouse of Dunbar; aunt, Connie Stowers of Aurora, OH; and mother-in-law, Patsy Lowery of Alum Creek.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Curry Funeral Home  with Pastor Frank Chapman and Dr. Max Hill officiating.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey.

Renee` Darlene Bowling

Renee BowlingRenee` Darlene Bowling, 46, of South Charleston, formerly of Sumerco, passed away Sunday, July 16, 2017 at home.

She was welcomed into Heaven by her Savior and reunited with her late father, Sidney Junior Allen and many other loved ones.

Renee` is survived by her daughter, Danielle Bowling and her companion, Clinton Gibson of Culloden; sons, Dustin Bowling and Blake Rutledge of Sumerco; mother, Janet Hill of South Charleston; brother, Robbie Allen and wife, Lisa, of South Charleston; sister Rita Smith of Sumerco; and five grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Riley, Will, Mary, Brooklynn and baby Raygen.

She had just moved one week before her passing to Kenna Homes in South Charleston and her mother would like to thank her new neighbors for making her feel so welcome in her very short time there.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Craig Gillenwater officiating and assisted by Dakota Smith. Burial will follow at the Anderson Cemetery in Sumerco. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions toward the funeral service.

Deidra PauleyDeidra Renee Pauley, 56, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV.

She worked 31 years for the WV Lottery as a validation manager.

Deidra was preceded in death by her father, Ray Pauley.

She is survived by her daughters, Kirstin McCallister (Travis Hudson) of Sod and Erica Danae of Columbus and Erica Broadnax who was like a daughter to her, godson Wesley Hollingsworth; mother, Elsie Pauley; sister, Portia Adkins; brother, Todd (Laura) Pauley; grandchildren, Paul & Kaleb Dotson and Brayden & Harper Danae Hudson;  three nieces, Heather, BreAnna and Gerrica Pauley ; two great nieces, Kiara & Katie Pauley; and her sisters of the heart, Kari Blankenship, Toni DeFade, Helen Brock, Becky Carnefix, Judy Renzelli and Sharon Hupp.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Minister Joseph Watts assisted by C. B. Keeney.  Burial will follow at the Forks of Coal Cemetery in Alum Creek. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

She attended Greenbranch Freewill Baptist Church and Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Sissy was preceded in death by her parents, Tilden and Oma Lester; brothers, Bob, Mayo, Clay, Okey and Hotrod Lester; and sisters, Ernestine, Bonnie and Martha.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Charles; daughters, Kim (Mike) Minney of Alum Creek and Julie (Don) Gibson of St. Albans; sisters, Betty Hall; brothers, Popeye and Bybo Lester; granddaughters, Kayla Rae Anderson and Allison Minney; grandsons, Kristopher and Sean (Amanda) Minney; and special friend, Cricket Vanover.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 14, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Butch Brogan and Kenny Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn, Pecks Mill. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Dwight W. Bayes, age 70, of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Alum Creek, WV, died on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. He retired as a Security Officer with the State of Florida. Surviving are 4 children: David W. Bayes of Keystone Heights, FL, Michelle L. Raider of Elkview, WV, Travis W. Bayes and Denise Bayes Cramer, both of Richmond, VA; a brother, Duke M. Bayes; and 7 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Cemetery in the Garden of Everlasting Life. Dr. Tim McDaniel will officiate.

Vivian Pauley Bird

Vivian Bird photoVivian Pauley Bird, 99, of Garretts Bend, Lincoln County, entered into heavenly rest on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Putnam Center in Hurricane, WV with her family by her side. She was born on January 24, 1918 in Lincoln County to the late James “J.A.” and Betty Pauley. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Clifford, who was named for her Irish twin brother Clifford Pauley who was killed in WWII; brothers Harold Pauley (a long-time Lincoln County teacher), Lyle Pauley and Ralph Pauley; sisters Marguerite “Mog” Adams, June Dunlap, Betty Bird and Odessa Moore.

Vivian attended a one-room school in Joe’s Creek and later worked at the General Store in Ruthlawn during WWII. While raising her kids she worked as a cook in Lincoln County schools. Family and neighbors loved her cooking and spent many hours at her kitchen table. In her later years she resided beside her sister June in Teays Valley. Vivian stayed active visiting her sisters, spoiling her grandkids, babysitting and getting into adventures with her sister June. She enjoyed board games, Rook and crocheting. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Vivian leaves behind many family members who will miss her dearly including daughter Joyce Beckett of Indiana and her children Julia Braun, Andy Beckett, Melanie Sanders and Adam Beckett; son Kenny (Linda) Bird and his children Angie Withrow, Jason Bird and April Bird Aldridge; seven great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and special niece Kylene Dunlap Brown. She also leaves behind her Putnam Center family who took great care of her during her time there.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to her Putnam Center family for the loving care they provided Vivian.

Funeral service will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Mark Ruby, Jeff Mosteller and Jodie Pauley officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Pauley Cemetery, Joe’s Creek. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001.

Dessie M. Graley

Dessie Grayley PhotoDessie M. Graley, 91, of South Charleston went home to be with Jesus Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

She was born one of triplets on March 28, 1926 in a log cabin at McCorkle, Lincoln County, WV, to Martin Van Buren and Gertrude Tyler Brown.

In 1952 Dessie married the love of her life, Rev. Lee W. Graley. She faithfully supported him as he preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ until he went home to be with the Lord in 1997.

For many years, she taught Sunday School at Lincoln Drive Church of God and also retired as a cook at Montrose Elementary School. Dessie was an avid quilter and she loved reading her Bible.

She was preceded in death by siblings, George, Lydia, Lewis, Hattie, Essie, Jessie, Martin Jr. and Barbara.

Even though she never preached a sermon from the pulpit, Dessie raised up a family of ministers, including her daughter, Rev. Paula Hill, son-in-law William Hill, grandson Aaron Hill and wife, Sarah and grandson William Lee Hill. She is also survived by great granddaughter, Miriam Rejoice Hill and sister, Lucy Ricks.

Service will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 6, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with her home going celebration to be officiated by the ministers of her family, Rev. Aaron Hill, Rev. Paula Hill, Rev. William O. Hill and William Lee Hill assisted by family friend Rev. Lois Joslin. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Norma Lee Tackett

Left to cherish her memories are sisters, Alice Goldsburg, Martha Young and Sue Young; children, Cheryl (Joe) James, Debbie (Joe) Zedella, Jimmy (Cindy) Tackett and Richard Tackett; grandchildren Sherri (Craig), Bobby, Billy (Heather), Christopher (Marlene) and Joey (Maureen); great grandchildren, Nick, Hannah, Tony, Destini, James, Dexter and Gavin; and great great grandchildren, Zane and Xander. Norma was loved and will be missed by many.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 3, at Curry Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Roberts and Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Burial will follow in Barker Cemetery, Ashford. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Sophia Marie Hensley

Sophia HensleySophia Marie Hensley, 98, of Sod went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Hospice West, South Charleston, WV.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Earl Hensley; son, Hassell Hensley and two grandchildren, Wayne Hensley and Mike Bays and was a member of of Vision of Harvest Baptist Church.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jean Bays and June Williamson; sisters, Macel Roberts and Hazel Hughes; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 32 great great-grandchildren and 4 great great great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:00pm on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, Alum Creek, with Pastor Billy Silva officiating.  Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

The family wants to extend a special thank you to Dr. Jonathan Lilly for all his special care through the years and her Pastor Billy Silva for his help and comfort during these difficult days.
