Elliott Lee Hammond

Elliott Lee Hammond, 80, of Julian, formerly of North Eaton, Ohio, died at home on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at home after a long illness.

He retired from the assembly line with Ford Motor Co. in Brook Park, Ohio, served as a deacon in the North Eaton Baptist Church, was a member of Lory Baptist Church and was a veteran of the Korean war.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; son, Benjamin Lee Hammond of home; sisters, Vernice Tranovich of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Juanita Kelley of Columbus, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Wood Cemetery at Camden on the Gauley. There will not be a visitation or funeral. Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, is in care of arrangements.

Mary “Sis” Belcher

Mary “Sis” Belcher, 73, of Clayton, North Carolina, died Sunday, May 14, 2006 at home after a 33 year struggle with cancer.

She was a homemaker and a Red Cross Volunteer for 40 years.

She is survived by:

Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV 25003 with Linda Meeker officiating. Burial will be held in Highland Memory Gardens, Godby, WV. Friends may call on Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM.

Mary Jo Daugherty, 50, of South Charleston, died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at home after a short illness.

She was a waitress at Bob Evans.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; son, Ralph Cullers; daughters, Cassie Caldwell and husband, Matt; Carrie Daugherty; seven grandchildren, Justen, Katherine and Elizabeth Cullers, Nikki Morrison, Celsie and Cody Caldwell; sisters, Pam Carey, Karen Hatfield, and Bonnie Arelleano; brothers, Jimbo, David and Bobby Cullers.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Bill Spencer officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call on Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Mary M. Pollard, 57, of Griffithsville went home to be with the Lord Monday, May 8, 2006 .
Her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was what enabled her to endure a long illness.

She was a 1966 graduate of Duval High School.

Henry Steve Fisher, Jr.

Henry Steve Fisher, Jr., 71, formerly of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2006 in Melbourne, Florida after a long illness.

He was the son of the late Henry S. Fisher, Sr. and was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary.

Steve was employed by Rose City Press Printing when he lived in Charleston, but then moved to Fort Washington, Maryland to work for the U.S. Government Printing Department where he retired in 1977. He also served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He then retired to live in Florida.

He is survived by loving mother, Mildred G. Fisher of Circleville, Ohio; son and wonderful caregiver, Steve of Melbourne, Florida, son, Brad of Atlanta, Georgia; sisters, Esther Hudson of Circleville, Ohio, Donna Moore of Charleston; three grandchildren who were the love of his life, Eric and Amanda of Maryland, Ryan of Atlanta, Georgia and a host of friends and loved ones.

Services with military graveside rites conducted by the Benny Padilla Post #4768 will be held Friday, May 12, 2006 at 1:00 PM at the West Virginia Memorial Mausoleum, Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes with Pastor Clarence Hutton officiating. There will not be a visitation. Friends and family are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Lung Associaton of West Virginia, PO Box 3980, Charleston, WV 25339.

Steve was the greatest son, brother, father, grandfather and friend anyone could have. We love you and will see you again one day.

Wanda L. Adkins, 72, of Statesboro, GA formerly of Lincoln County, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at the home of her daughter, Libby Johnson of Portal, GA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie; sons, Randy & Teddydoyle; and daughter, Kathy.

James P. Davis

1st Sgt. James P. Davis, USMC , retired, 78, of Cross Lanes, formerly of Garretts Bend, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 26, 2006.

He was born March 24, 1928 in Fayette County to Joseph “Jodie” and Delphia Davis. Following graduation from Duval High School in Lincoln County in 1945, he served a short stint in the Navy, serving in World War II. He later joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving the Korean War and two tours in Vietnam. At the time of his retirement, he was a first sergeant, Military Police and Guard Company at Camp Lejeune, NC. During his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars with Combat “V”. Upon retirement from the military, James was employed by Logan Concrete in Logan, until 1990. In later years, he was also an active member of the Bennie Padilla VFW Post 4768 of Alum Creek.

He was a faithful member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Garretts Bend, where he loved singing in the choir. In recent years he also attended the Tyler Mountain Baptist Church, Cross Lanes. James was also an avid golfer and devoted family man.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Edwin; daughter, Kimberlee McLaughlin; first wife, Phyllis “Fib” Parsons Davis; brothers, John W. Davis and Joseph “Jr.” Davis; sister, Cleo Pauley and grandson, Brian Berkery.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Ann Davis; brother, Jack Richard and wife, Kay of Garretts Bend; sisters, Margie Stover of King, NC; Janet Paul and husband, Bob of Georgiana, AL; sons, Bill Davis and wife, Cathy of Mason, Steve Hannah of Hilliards, PA; daughters, Joanna Valleau and husband, John of Cross Lanes; Debi Berkery and husband, Larry of Sarasota, FL,
Terri Del Giudice and husband, Michael of South Charleston, Jamie Lea Peyton and husband, George of Louisville, KY.

He was the loving grandfather to Brandon and Frank Del Giudice of South Charleston; Justin and Lindsay Valleau of Greensboro, NC; Brandi Sparks of Burlington, KY; Krista McLaughlin of St. Albans; Megan Davis of Huntington and Scott Berkery of Sarasota, FL. Great-grandchildren are Taylor Gagliard of Boston, MA and Benjamin Valleau of Greensboro, NC.

Services will be held Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating. Military graveside rites will be performed by the Bennie Padilla VFW Post 4768. Friends may call on Friday, April 28th from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Paul Cemetery in Garretts Bend.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064. The family would like to express their appreciation to their many friends and to Kanawha Hospice for their support during Mr. Davis’ illness.

Damon P. “Jack” Thompson

Damon P. “Jack” Thompson, 86, of Alkol, died Tuesday April 25, 2006 at CAMC General Division Charleston after a short illness.

Jack was a retired post master from the Alkol Post Office and owner/operator of Thompson’s Grocery at Alkol. He also was a member of the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge # 71 for 49 years and a member of the former Alkol Lions Club, an Army veteran of World War II, attended Sycamore Grove and Beach Grove Baptist Churches and was a graduate of Duval High School class of 1938.

Jack is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter and her husband, Rita and Sam Saul of Alkol; grandchildren and their spouses, Phoebe and Barry Harless of Griffithsville, John and Cammie Saul of Hamlin, Joe and Jamie Saul of Alum Creek; great grandchildren, Baley, Natalie, Tanner, Brook, Braden, Riley, Mattie and Caroline; sister, Nona Thompson of Alkol.

Service will be 11:00 AM Friday, April 28, 2006 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastors Oshel Bell and Henry Estep officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites conducted by the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge # 71 will be at the Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Joshua Lee Holtsclaw

Joshua Lee Holtsclaw, 22, of Scott Depot, died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at home after a sudden illness.

He was a former student at St. Albans High School.

He is survived by his daughters, Jozi Lynn and Kirsten Nevaeh; mother and step-dad, Bonnette and Bill Hinton; father, Rick Holtsclaw; brothers, Casey and Cody; sister, Brittney; step-brothers, Jim and Pete Hinton; maternal grandparents, Jerry Wooten, and Bonnie Alford; paternal grandparent, Jane Holovic and Charlie Holtsclaw; special friend, Paula Gibson and her children, Dallas, Kiarra,
Lexi, and Daisha.

Service will be 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, McCorkle. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

David M. Young

David M. Young, 54, of Charleston, formerly of Sod, left for a better life on Friday, April 21, 2006 at CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston after complications from open heart surgery.

David was a 1971 graduate of Duval High School and was retired from Union Carbide with 28 years of service.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Gracie; brothers and their wives, Bob Young and Shirley of Alum Creek, Larry Young and Marie of Sod; sisters, Pansy Young of Sumerco and Vada Young of Alum Creek; step-daughters, Darlena Harmon of Sissonville, Tina Light of South Charleston and Yvonne Kidd of South Carolina; stepson, Marshall Dotson of Boone County; sister-in-law, Velma Pomeroy and her husband, Keith of Cabin Creek.

Service will be 2:00 pm Monday, April 24, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in the Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Friends may call from 4 to 6 PM Sunday April 23, at the funeral home.
