Betty Lou Tugwell, 71 of So Charleston passed away on Monday, August 12, 2013 at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a short illness. A graveside services will be held 1:30 PM Wednesday, Aug 14, 2013 at the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery in Institute, WV,. Curry Funeral Home at Alum Creek is in care of the arrangements.

Barbara WilsonBarbara Spaulding Hess Wilson, 80, of South Charleston, moved to her final home, Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Hospice West South Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Donna and husband James Hess; brothers, William and J.R. Spaulding; sister, Peggy Barker and half sister, Tammy Berry.

She was owner/operator of several residential care homes in Oak Hill and Charleston.

She is survived by her children ; Linda (John) Skrobak, Kay (Marty) Minske and Mike (Cindy) Hess, grandchildren; Kelley, Josh, Jamie and Jessi, great grandsons; Jocob and Sai, sisters Myrtle Reid and Cheslyne Baner, half sisters; Paula Marshall and Lou Selbe.

Service will be 1:00 PM Friday, August 16, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at the Hess Family Cemetery South Charleston. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jane BlahaD. Jane Blaha, 85, of Dunbar, formerly of St. Albans, WV, and Morris County, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 5, 2013 at Dunbar Center, Dunbar after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald F. Blaha; son, Ronald M. Blaha, and parents, Robert and Ethel Paterson. She had various jobs throughout her life but what she enjoyed most was her work as an interior designer.

She is survived by two daughters: Debora (Michael) Duvall, St. Albans, and Lesley (Steve) Wells, Lebanon, NJ; brother, Robert E. (Eileen) Paterson, Allendale, NJ and grandchildren: Lindsey, Kevin and Matthew Duvall, and Brian, Andrew and David Wells.

A memorial service will be announced and held at a later date in Jane’s home state of New Jersey.

Jane had a lifelong love for the arts and in lieu of flowers would appreciate memorial donations to the Fund For The Arts, 803 Quarrier St., Suite 100, Charleston, WV 25301. Also, the family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to the staff at Genesis Dunbar Center (Sunbridge) for the love and absolutely wonderful care they gave our Mother and Grandmother.

Calvin McCallisterCalvin L. McCallister, 75, of Yawkey passed away Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Montgomery General Hosptal ER. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda and parents, Chester and Flora McCallister. He is survived by his children, Connie McCallister (Fiancé Paul Masley), Jerry McCallister, Donna Webb and Dora (Clinton) Bragg; brothers, Lester Dale and Barry McCallister; three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and many friends. Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Sunday, August 11th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman and Minister Kenneth Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Charles Pell Carr Jr.

Charley CarrCharles Pell Carr, Jr., of Redington Beach, FL, formerly of St. Albans, WV, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Hospice West, South Charleston, WV. He was born on March 3, 1928. Charles was an Air Force Sergeant during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Lucille E. Carr, father, Charles Pell Carr, Sr., mother, Lottie Faye Carr, brother, Samuel D. Carr and sister, Esther Midkiff Roe.

He was a retired construction worker from Union Boiler in 1982, and attended Bethany Baptist Church, St. Albans. He was a member of Washington Lodge 58 AF&AM, St. Albans, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Charleston,and a member of the Beni-Kedem Shrine, Charleston. He was a member of Millwright Local Union 1755, Parkersburg, and the Moose Lodge 868, St. Albans.

Charles is survived by ten brothers and sisters: Anna B. Morris, Alum Creek; Joseph D. (Dorla) Carr, St. Albans; Frasure G. Carr, Teays Valley; Mary M. Drumheller, St. Albans; Rebekah R. Boone, Teays Valley; Robert E. (Helen) Carr, Nitro; Margaret E. Boggs, Greensboro, NC; Betty (Russell) Tinsley, Thomasville, NC; Audra F. Carpenter, Vermilion, OH; Thomas G. (Abby) Carr-Vermilion, OH; one sister-in-law, Betty Hinzman, St. Albans and several nieces and nephews and other family members.

Services will be at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, 12:30PM on Saturday, August 10, 2013 with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in the Cunningham Memorial Park with military graveside rites by Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service.

Dewey (Duke) Quintrell

On Sunday, August 4, 2013 a much loved and respected husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend departed this world to join family and friends gone before.  Dewey joined his mother, Grace; father, Harvey; brothers, Forrest and Dorris; sisters, Bertha and Nona.
He was retired from the Local Laborers Union 1353 – JHL Masonary and attended Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church.
Dewey (Duke) Quintrell was the husband of Mary Ann, father of Tim (Kim) and Linda (Susan and Nancy): grandfather to Justin, Emilee (Derek), Vicki, Samantha, Savannah and Alison; brother to Tommy (Judy) Quintrell, Eva (Ben) Gillenwater, Vernon (Brenda) Quintrell and Zola Wright.
His many nieces and nephews will greatly miss him.  His great-great nieces and nephews, Cody, Kyle, Addison, Mykaela, Kindle and Zion will miss their fun times with “Papaw Duke”, but his love will never be forgotten.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Donald Lilly and Sue for all their care and support through the years; Pastor Frank Chapman, Andrew Boner, Jeff Quintrell, Jeff Gillenwater, special niece, Jean (Dan) Gillenwater; brothers in law, Gary (Eleanor) Huff and Larry (Shirley) Huff.
Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Friday, August 9th, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Entombment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum, South Charleston.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.

Randy Alan Banks, 56 of Alum Creek passed away Sunday, August 4, 2013 at Hubbard Hospice House.

He is survived by his Son, Curtis Banks of Sod; Stepson, John Flood; 2 Grandchildren; Sister Janet Dixon of OH; 2 Brothers, Curtis Banks of OH, Jerry Banks of OH.

Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday at Curry Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek.

Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service.

Hubert Leo Moore

Hubert Leo Moore
Hubert Leo Moore, 86, of Alum Creek formerly of Ripley, WV, was called home by the Lord after a short illness on Saturday, July 27, 2013.

He retired from Kaiser Aluminum at Ravenswood after 33 years of service. He served in the U. S. Marines during WWII and the Korean War, where he was highly decorated, being wounded twice and receiving the purple heart.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Lou Ellis Moore.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Connie Lowther (Bob) and Debbie Blasingim (Tom); son, Curtis Moore (Kris); step-sons, Russell Wright (Kathryn), Bill Wright (Karen) and Randy Wright (Kristy); step-daughters, Brenda Anderson (Glen “Bub”) and Cindy Lindgren (Bobby); 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, 7 step-great grandchildren and 2 step-great great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:00am Tuesday, July 30th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Venny VanHoose officiating followed by Military Rites conducted by the Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Detachment 947 Marine Corps League. Graveside service will follow at 1:00 pm at Jackson County Memorial Gardens, Cottageville, WV. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home.

Gregory Scott Lewis, 50, of St. Albans, died Thursday, July 25, 2013 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness with his family by his side.

He was an employee in the meat department at Walmart in Cross Lanes he attended the 1st Baptist Church in St. Albans and was a veteran, serving four years in the U. S. Army.

Greg was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Lewis and grandmother, Ruth Scanlin.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Angela; sons, Gregory Scott and Aaron Ray Lewis; daughter, Ambria lea Lewis; mother and step-father, Sandra and Carlotte Thomas; brother, Mike (Cindy) Lewis; sisters Rebecca Lewis (Rick), Jerri (Jeff) Seams, and Tammy (Tim) Cooper; special aunts and uncles, Kathy and Woody Edwards and Steve and Marilyn Tawney; and close friend of the family, Dixie Hamilton.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Monday, July 29th at the First Baptist Church, 523 2nd St. & 6th Ave., St. Albans with Pastor Joel Harpold officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions towards funeral services.

Pauline C. Boggs

Pauline C. (Knicely) Boggs, 81, of Danville formerly of Black Diamond Arbors went home to the Lord July 25, 2013 at the Boone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a sudden illness.

She was born January 11, 1932 and was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Boggs.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Darnell of Charleston, sons, Raymond Boggs of Sumerco, and Charles (Pam) Boggs of Scott Depot, four grandchildren, Natalie Wandling, Kristen Searls, Rhonda Lovejoy and Cassie Harris, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Monday, July 29 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park South Charleston. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank nurse Beverly and the staff at Boone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their love and care of Pauline while she was there.
